I feel like a really overlooked line of Tara’s is in the music room, when she says “I could barely even say the _word_ ‘lesbian’” because it shows, like you guys said, that you can know yourself but also be effected by society’s view on you. There is so much stigma around the word lesbian, and it makes a lot of newer queer girls more confused, or even scared to use it. There’s a fear of being seen as a predator, or being wrong and everyone judging you if you realise “oh. I’m not a lesbian.” This happens for a lot of sexualities, as we live in a very comphet world, and it’s important to show that owning yourself is a journey, a journey that is 10000% worth it in the end.

After thinking I was bi for like 3 years and slowly realizing I wasn’t attracted to women, I was outside by myself thinking about my sexuality and literally couldn’t bring myself to say “I’m gay” out loud because everything about it made me hate it. Since then (~4 years ago) I’ve improved a lot but still saying the words “I’m gay” makes me recoil usually. I related to that scene so much it’s absurd.

Nick's mom is an unsung hero! She is perceptive, she knows when something is bothering Nick, she sees that Charlie is good for Nick, she listens, and she's so wonderful when Nick comes out to her.

Also, in the car after the fight in episode 7, you can see her have that aha moment when she asks Nick, "Charlie's a really special friend, isn't he?" It's not really used too much anymore, but "special friend" used to be a common euphemism for a same-sex partner. In this scene, we basically see her realize that her son isn't straight, but other than asking that one question, she lets him take his own time in coming out to her. And we see Nick taking his first step toward coming out to her, although obviously he's not quite ready for that final step yet.

When you said about how Nick and Charlie may have more representation because they’re white cis men, it’s not . The books were originally all about them with only showing what happens to the other big characters when they’re with Nick and Charlie. They are the ultimate main characters. In the tv show Alice gives more details and story around the other big characters, but Nick and Charlie have always been the main characters. Edit: Holy shit thanks for all the likes

I think Nick is probably my favorite character for his emotional maturity and the fact that he is the king of healthy communication, as well as the fact that he is the anti-Ben and is so thoughtful and appreciative of Charlie and understands that Charlie has been dealing the trauma of the abusive relationship with Ben. Plus, Nick Nelson - bi icon. Love the bi representation here - it's so healthy and it isn't over-sexualized or negative. And I love that Nick might be hella confused about his attraction to and feelings for Charlie, but he doesn't try to run away from them or fight them. He just faces them head on and works on understanding them. He might not know what his sexuality is in most of this season, but he does know how he feels about Charlie and he is sure about that. Plus, he's adorable, he has a great relationship with his mother (who is also a rock star here), and he's got Nellie by his side. Kit Connor did an outstanding job of bringing Nick to life and showing all of the nuance of his struggles throughout the season, as well. And Joe Locke - wow, for a first ever professional acting role, he did such an amazing job of bringing Charlie Spring to life. They all did such a great job, and I need this show to just win all of the awards now.

It’s like colors and bodies and sexualities and genders and ages and woooooo everyone is so gorgeous and complex and lovely in every possible way. So yeah I recommend it!!!

I also loved this show bc I saw so much of it with myself. A lot of people tell me I am the American version of nick (I play football, have a similar haircut, am bisexual, and have a dork of a bf who has Charlie’s hair and personality). It was super refreshing and validating for me to see this. Thanks Alice Oseman!

I relate to Tao in a way. In the bathroom scene where he’s like “you’re just gonna call me a jealous over protective friend” or something and I sobbed. I’ve been the jealous friend. I’ve been so petrified of losing so many wonderful friends that when they made new friends or had other friends and they didn’t hang out with me I’d feel frantic and like I had to save everything. But like instead I’d just pushed them away and lost them anyway. Ik that’s not the entire thing but Jesus Christ the amount I sobbed at that realization. Thankfully I’ve grown out of that but younger me couldn’t handle that

I read the comic before seeing the TV show. I really think their relationship is central because the comic is actually told from Charlie’s point of view and he is the main character. One thing I really loved about the TV show was to see more of the stories of the friends who were just side characters in the comic.

I would say that my favorite character is Nick, because I like how he is pushing through a really confusing time in his life to discover his true self. I love that he is able to stand up to his friends, and that he gets more and more comfortable being himself in public. I love watching his journey! I also really love Elle because she is practical, sweet, and strong, and she beautifully navigating her way through a lot of difficult changes in her life. ❤️

The thing about Nick and Charlie is true. They are the cis white mlm couple. However, so far they are clearly the main characters of the show. Their love story is the central plot and they have more screen time. So that plays major role in their popularity

yeah, and in the comic its all about them. with the show alice has been able to show more of the other characters but since the beggining (many years ago) it's been manily about nick and charlie, they're the protagonists so it makes sense that fans talk mostly about them. if the show was equally about all the characters, then we could definitely say that fans favor them for being white and cis, but it's not the case here, it's really mainly just because they've been the protagonists ever since the comicsc started

@@esf34147.... Alice wrote so many stories in the universe... Tori in Solitaire, Aled (not in the series, but in the comics) and Frances in Radio Silence, Georgia in Loveless... They're all connected stories and there WILL be more representation, but give it time... Alice has been focusing on Heartstopper a lot because it's so loved by people. But I'm pretty sure volume 5 will be the last so we'll get new characters and stories Edit (for the original commenter): also, let's not forget Tara, Darcy and Elle have gotten a lot more story progression in the series, so it's definitely not just focused on Nick and Charlie for the sake of them being white and men. Other than that, you can also say there's only teen lgbtq+ rep, but that's not an issue apparently? (I can't wait for the teachers to get their spotlight though 😭)

About the fandom promoting the cis white romance of Nick and Charlie above the others, I don't think that's the case. In the graphic novels, especially, *they* are the main characters. I mean, Charlie is the protagonist and Nick is the co-star. Or at least that's how *I* saw it in the books. In the show, though, there is so much more *time* given to flash out the side characters as well, which is *amazing*, ofc, and I love that, but it can bea bit confusing about who's story we're watching. Idk, I don't want to come across as not caring about Tara and Darcy or Elle and Tao, I love all of those characters (I've given them 9, 9.5, 8 and 7.5 in that order) I just think that they're not the main characters

Whenever Ben came on screen I would say "Why are you back? No one likes you," My friends thought it was funny, and I stand by what I say. There's an awesome scene in the graphic novel with Darcy where Tara is talking to Nick, and Darcy sneaks up and blows a trumpet in Tara's ear. I adore it. El, love her. An absolute icon. Sweet little Nellie, you cannot hate her... unless you're allergic to dogs, but it's still hard. Nick is a golden retriever boyfriend. But, in the books he's so much more of a himbo, both in design and relative braincell count. /pos Charlie is a hekin trooper with the "No! Nick isn't straight," He's so sweet Tori does straight up appear in the books, and I think she has her own series or book.
