Whoever says parallel 5ths are wrong IS WRONG

A Foggy Day (In London Town). Arrangement by Walter Latzko. Originally sung by 1978 International Quartet Champions, the Bluegrass Student Union! In theory class, I was taught that parallel 5ths are wrong - and this tag clearly disproves that rule! ;) I apologize for the couple small differences in the video and the transposition.

they're considered wrong because of how well they fit together. they blend together too much and it ends up sounding only like 1 voice instead of multiple. I think in this case, due to the intricacies of barbershop tuning it's not as noticeable. Hope this helps, though I'm not too knowledgeable on it all myself

Hello there Tim, can I just say that I am from the UK; I play classical music often, however I am also in a barbershop group in my school; I recently discovered your channel, and I have listened to your go the distance many times, when you sang on this channel or with the rest of your group. I believe you are a great inspiration and I just wanted to say thank you for all that you do; I am also a tenor, but I definitely don’t have the range you have!!!

Wonderful, as always!!!! And whoever says parallel fifths are wrong is indeed wrong -- parallel fifths are just counterproductive in situations where you want two voices to sound independent (like in a Bach chorale). But they sound lovely here! (As a music theory junkie it irks me when 18th century counterpoint rules are taught as if they apply to all music lol)

It's so funny to me the appeal of O Come, O Come. That was my second arrangement in 1991 - I was so clumsy back then. It started with the tag (inspired by First Call), then the final chorus followed by the middle chorus. Which was the original start. Then I was talking to my dad about the chart and he started singing "Veni, Veni" (in Latin of course, ha, ha, ha) and that inspired me to do the first chorus in Gregorian style. Such a cluster of a chart that ended up working!!!

Parallel 5ths are against part writing rules. I was not taught they were wrong. I was told to learn how to break the rules tastefully. I would argue that your use of parallels are a completely different instance as only 2 of the 4 parts are in action: cats in the tenor clef are resting. Arguably, you just slipped in a bar of some pretty sweet organum. Great Singing, Tim. I look forward to your videos.

One enhancement I would like to request is to number each of your singing windows with a number that corresponds to which pitch is being sung. Sorry, I am not a musician so I am not sure what terminology to use. Basically, if you were to number the voices from top to bottom in the music staff, such that 1 is highest voice, 2 is next, etc, and 4 is the lowest voice on the staff. Then label each singing window with a #1, #2, etc, #4. That way if I wanted to watch you sing the highest pitches, I know to watch window #1. And even better would be if I could ONLY listen to a certain window. I would LOVE LOVE to hear each part separately and then hear them all together again.

  • @TimWaurickMusic

Thanks for that. I almost always place the videos Tenor, Lead, Bass, Baritone - similar to how most quartets stand. So it would be 1, 2, 4, 3 from top to bottom on the music. I hope that helps a bit. And I appreciate the suggestion.

First, it's said that "rules are made to be broken", and never was this more true than in harmony. My music theory teacher used to say that it's okay to break the rules, but just be aware that you're doing so and you'd better have a good reason. In this case these are really just two voices singing bare open fifths, not even triads, so I'm not sure that the "rules" of harmony even apply. I think consecutive fifths are frowned upon because they stick out, they call the listener's attention to themselves and distract from the harmony as a whole. But in this context, that's okay because there is no other harmonic activity happening. It's just those open fifths, all by themselves, and that's exactly where the listerner's attention is supposed to be focused. So it's all good. 😀 Now, let's talk about the Beatles' arrangement of "Here, There and Everywhere"... 😉
