What They WON'T Tell You about The Godfather's...

Who is the "REAL" Godfather? If You were a "Mob Boss", Who would you currently be? 💭
Let's find out ➡️ bit.ly/MafiaBossQuiz
Who would win if in some alternate reality Vito and Michael were to go head to head? 🔥🥊
𝑾𝒉𝒐 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝑩𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑮𝒐𝒅𝒇𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓? 𝑫𝒐𝒏 𝑽𝒊𝒕𝒐 𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝑽𝑺 𝑫𝒐𝒏 𝑴𝒊𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒆𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒍𝒆𝒐𝒏𝒆, 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒕'𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒅𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒉 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝑽𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒐...
Vito and Michael Corleone, are both the personification of power, wealth and intelligence. 2 of the MOST iconic characters in film history, brilliantly played by 2 of the greatest actors of all time, Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. These characters are the epitome of what having an extraordinary amount of power actually looks like 👑
But the question always comes up, who was a better don? Both excelled at gaining power and expanding their empire and sphere of influence. Both ended up learning how to pull the strings of power to their favor ⚖️
So, it really is a difficult question to answer subjectively, unless you have a clear bias towards either one, you certainly can make an argument for both of them from a first glance. That’s why in this video we will be extensively analysing Don Vito and Michael, comparing them through some key categories that by the end gives us a superior and more logical answer to this question, to who was the "Better" Godfather 💎
So who is Vito Corleone? Don Vito Corleone was the founder and the patriarch of the Corleone crime family. Vito came to America as an orphan and slowly clawed his way up to be one of the most powerful and revered individuals of his time and even beyond. Vito’s big break came after the “olive oil war”. Where he ruthlessly dethroned the previous boss of bosses, by cunningly getting his very own caporegimes Emilio Barzini and Frankie Five Angels to betray their don. The classic, “divide et impera”. Through his intelligence, wit and cunning he was able to reach the heights of power and wealth and pass down his legacy to his son. Vito was the epitome of what a powerful leader is, he is the representation of what and how men of extreme power are able to strive and pull the strings of influence. But what differentiated Vito from other powerful individuals, is that he had a very strict code of honour that he would never break, he set limits to how far he would go depending on the scenario. As Machiavelli would have put it, he was both feared and loved.
Who was Michael Corleone? The youngest son of the don, Michael Corleone had always tried to stay away from his fathers shadow and wanted nothing to do with the family business. Michael was very intelligent, he inherited most of Vito’s strengths, and with his education and military experience, he really was on par and some would argue, an even better don than his father. Michael started off as a very moral man, always looking down upon what his family was involved in, however, after the series of events we see in the films, Michael begins to understand his father’s philosophy, and begins to transform into becoming just as ruthless as Vito, sometimes even going past what Vito deemed to be too far. But as a Don, Michael almost made every right move possible, allowing him to carry the family and ensuring its survival. After conducting this analysis, and really trying to look at this not just from our own bias, but from the lens of individuals far more wise than us.
In the end we have finally come to a solid conclusion. A definitive answer that has never been truly answered with the depth we just went through.

Also, Vito literally helped every single person who was willing to kiss his hand and call him godfather, even the people who could barely offer anything in return. He does even more in the book. (He helps a poor woman avoid being evicted with her pet.) He sends his consigliere across the country to personally help Johnny Fontane, a washed-up singer who couldn't sing anymore. He takes in an orphan kid because he was friends with his son Santino. And he was never overly harsh with his family, no matter how unfit they were, which was arguably his biggest weakness. Vito wanted to become a powerful man so that the pezzonovantes (bigshots and mafiosos) couldn't push him around. Michael wanted to be an emperor and to have sons to carry on his royal lineage. This question is a no-brainer to me. Vito is the Godfather.

I shouldn't be spewing this out before watching the video, but in my own opinion Vito excelled at his conception of what an "old world" mafia boss should be. Family and friends oriented, listening to the little people in the neighborhood, having moral lines he won't cross. Michael, on the other hand, is new world. Cutthroat, somewhat cartel-like, anything for the sake of expanding his business and power even at the cost of family and friends. They're stark opposites to each other.

Vito Corleone was born Dec. 7th. At the end of Godfather II, when you see the old family getting together (with Sonny still alive), Mike announces he signed up for the Military. Mike did this because the Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor. That was December 7th, 1941. While I won't use the derogatory term Sonny used to described the Japanese, he did say "the nerve of them. And on Pop's birthday too." Pop was Vito Corleone. And if you meant Happy Birthday to Marlon Brando, his birthday was earlier; April 3rd, 1924 to be exact. 😀

He refused to be like others around him and pretty much saved the community or at the very least was a saviour for them. Michael - had to do the same to some extent yes, but had the benefit of already being in a country where he grew up in and to some extent accepted. He was given privileges through his father’s sacrifice and had an example of how to move. We don’t know enough about Vitos own father to know what example Vito had and how they lived as a family, only that he brokered no BS and told the local don to go F himself. Both were great in my opinion.

Enzo The Baker was the most duplicitous man to ever come out of Sicily. he was the man behind the man behind the man. He wielded absolute power & no one suspected, except maybe Don Vito when he learned of Enzo's mysterious appearance at the hospital. urinating to disgrace your enemy is what might have given him away, he was the essence of old-school. he tipped off Michael to Hyman Roth's plan to kill him. the message was disguised on the birthday cake at the Havana party in an arcane Sicilian code.. Enzo was not there but Roth's inexplicable order to the waiter to show everyone the cake saved Michael.

I give the edge to Vito as IMO he was loved and feared. While IMO Michael was feared. I also look at the way they both handled mistakes made by Fredo. Vito was shot 5 times and almost died while under Fredo's "protection" but there is no indication of any resentment by Vito against Fredo. Michael was betrayed by Fredo. However Fredo was duped by Roth and said he did not know Roth would try to kill Michael. Yet Michael could not put the betrayal behind him and forgive Fredo and eventually had him killed. That killing haunted Michael later in life. He would have been better off handling Fredo as Vito did.

And if Mike left him alive fredo would've tried again due to feeling 'owed'

Vito Corleone is by far the best example of a Godfather. He was both feared and loved by the people around him. He treated everyone with respect no matter what his/her status was. In life, when all is lost, hope is by far the only reason for living. With that, Don Vito was able to offer hope to the hopeless unlike Michael who was ruthless and didn't show enough compassion towards others.

The problem with Fredo was that he was smart, but he was also weak. He was blinded by ambition in that he wanted what he hadn't earned. Instead of learning from his mentors in Las Vegas, he treated himself to entitlements like fooling around with waitresses who were supposed to be working. Therefore, he threw away the opportunity to prove himself. Michael did earn what he had by paying high prices like the deaths of Apollonia and his daughter. He proved he was smart enough to learn from his father and consult him often.

He became extremely dangerous to those around him. I'm not sure where Michael's loyalty lay, it didn't seem to be with his family like his father. All he had was power. Totally agree CM with Vito as the winner. Vito did start it all pretty much on his own in a pretty tough environment fraught with pitfalls. Michael had Vito to advise him...a huge and powerful advantage. Michael built upon what Vito initially established but he take some bigger losses. Even though Vito lost his son in a costly war, Michael did lose his family in many ways, something that would have been inconceivable to the don. Vito was much more in touch with everyone being seen as compassionate man, jovial and approachable. He was successful in achieving that very difficult balance of being loved and feared. Michael was feared not so much loved.

It's not really a debate. In legit business, startup artists often can't run and maintain the exploding size of their new business. So they are just different and primarily able to adapt to the current situation.

In my opinion GF2, is the best starting point as it shows the parallel between Vito and Mike at their prime on how they handle their business life and family life. Vito's whole family was taken away from him as a little boy and was about to be gone if he didn't escape into hiding. He ended getting revenge later on while his family went on vacation back to the he escaped.Vito highly regarded family despite their flaws and not have harm done to them even if it caused him to get hurt. Mike was initially about family in GF1 up until his first wife Apollina was gone from car explosion, and his brother Sonny was set up by his brother in law Carlos for a hit. Carlos was also beating up Mike's sister Connie. Fredo didn't stand up for himself against Moe Green. He was warned in GF1 to not go against the family. Before that he did a poor job protecting Vito. In GF2, Fredo almost got Mike's immediate family hit at bedtime for going against what Mike said in GF1. Mike chose the life. The life chose Vito.
