You won't Believe what REALLY happened to Carlo Rizzi...
The HIDDEN Mistake that allowed Michael Corleone to know it was Carlo Rizzi How did Carlo Rizzi Betray Michael and Sonny Corleone? | The 48 Laws of Power Explained
In the Godfather, the one event that completely changed the paradigm of the Corleone family’s fight for supremacy, was the trap placed for the acting don, Sonny Corleone. There was someone within the family that had conspired to have him taken out, a traitor. However after years of rebuilding, Michael finally confronts this traitor after years of putting them at ease, giving them a false sense of security. As we all know, this traitor was Carlo Rizzi. So the question that we all have been wondering, is how did Michael know, Although we can assume that he concluded that he saw through that.
However, upon looking into this further, it's actually not as simple or clear as we all thought, rather was actually quite shocking….
At the height of the 5 families war, Carlo betrayed the Corleone family and played a crucial role in taking out the acting boss, Santino Corleone, Shifting the balance of power in the war. After sonny was taken out, the don gathers what strength he had left, and goes to negotiate a peace deal with the other families. Which put them in a bad position, however he knew that if the family was to survive, he would need some time, and make sure his son Michael is back to takeover and regain their position on top. And so, after Micheals return, a couple years go by and he is now the new don, and the time had come to settle all the families unfinished business. One of them was avenging his older brothers murder. But after seemingly giving Carlo more responsibility and having him enter the closely knit inner circle, even becoming godfather to his son, Michael confronts Carlo on his betrayal, which completely shocks him. But the question we all have, is how, how did Michael uncover that it was Carlo who had betrayed the family and had pulled that little stunt courtesy of don Barzini. How was Michael able to even get a confession from Carlo, revealing the final thread of this scheme. After Micheals return, a couple years go by and he is now the new don, and the time had come to settle all the family's unfinished business. One of them was avenging his older brother's murder. But after seemingly giving Carlo more responsibility and having him enter the closely knit inner circle, even becoming godfather to his son, Michael confronts Carlo on his betrayal, which completely shocks him. But the question we all have, is how? Who did Carlo call? What happened to Carlo Rizzi in The Godfather? Did Connie know Carlo killed Sonny? What happened to Connie's baby in The Godfather? Why did Carlo betray Sonny?
How did Michael uncover that it was Carlo who had betrayed the family and had pulled that little stunt courtesy of Don Barzini? How was Michael able to even get a confession from Carlo, revealing the final thread of this scheme? And why did Michael and Don Vito allow themselves to be perceived as weak and naive?
Well, this goes back a lot further than you think…
Yeah, This was part of a masterful set up that was years in the making.
He somehow managed to skilfully utilise one of the most powerful Laws of Power.
Giving us a true masterclass that you need to understand.
So who is Carlo? Carlo was of half northern Italian and half Sicilian descent, he grew up in native of Nevada and former labourer, Carlo migrated to New York City following trouble with the law and later became a friend of Sonny Corleone, through whom he met Sonny's sister Connie in 1941 at a surprise birthday party for Sonny's father Vito. They were married on the last Saturday of August 1945 in a traditional Sicilian wedding at the Corleone compound, a compromise made in order to appease Vito, who was disappointed with his daughter's choice in a husband.
To put things into perspective, here is a timeline of the events, to give us an overall view of the backstory as well as what led to all this.. and also summarise what had happened so that we can go into the important details.

Disagree with that. I think in the back of his mind, Carlo knew he was more than likely a dead man. He hoped he wouldn't be found out as a traitor, but he really didn't have anyplace to go that wouldn't further solidify his status as a traitor....so he hoped like crazy that he could be forgiven against his own gut feeling that he really couldn't be forgiven. That was what made Carlo sit tight and take the bait.

Michael and even Tom Hagen managed to use multiple Laws of Power. Here are some of the main ones: Law 21: Play a sucker to catch a sucker - Seem dumber than your mark. Judgement: No one likes feeling stupider than the next person. The trick, then, is to make your victims feel smart-and not just smart, but smarter than you are. Once convinced of this, they will never suspect that you may have ulterior motives. Law 35: Master the Art of Timing Which states: Never seem to be in a hurry-hurrying betrays a lack of control over yourself, and over time. Always seem patient, as if you know that everything will come to you eventually. Become a detective of the right moment; sniff out the spirit of the times, the trends that will carry you to power. Learn to stand back when the time is not yet ripe, and to strike fiercely when it has reached fruition. and a few more "hidden" ones scattered throughout the video...
These two Godfather movies are brilliant masterpieces. Your videos help me understand more of the psychological complexities.
It was so messed up what Carlo did to Sonny. Sonny befriended him, introduced her to his baby sister.
The fact he allowed Carlo to abuse Connie goes back to old school Italian ways. A man ruled his house and keeping his wife in line was expected. Like in The Sopranos. Richie tells Chris to never lay a hand on his niece unless he gives her his last name. Once she was his wife that was seen as okay.

But when you think about it, the family would have looked much better had 1) Sonny been wise enough not to associate with Carlo, 2) The family ensured not to put Carlo in a position where he'd be capable of hurting the family...Maybe try to encourage Connie Corleone to find someone who isn't so untrustworthy and ambitious? Maybe you don't put someone like Carlo in a position where he has so little importance that he'll consider betrayal as a potential good decision, yet important enough to be able to betray the family in a way that ends up costing Sonny's life. I know that this is incredibly easy to say in hindsight, but it's equally as easy to pretend that everything that happens in the movie is the result of brilliant plans by the Corleone family...I mean, yes the movies are in large part about Vito and Michael's plans, but the very reason why they have to make those plans are because they ended up tough situations that they hadn't perfectly anticipated. Obviously you can't always control what your enemies are going to do, it doesn't mean the Corleones are weak or stupid, it, I just think that, while the plans that we see take place on screen may seem to be brilliant and very well coordinated, we shouldn't forget about the bad planning or lack of planning that led them in such situations to begin with. Maybe they aren't such absolute masters of the "rules of power" and such...Now let's be clear, I'm not saying that these aren't amazing movies :p.

The fact that Sonny didn't totally beat Carlo within an inch of his life was seen as a sign of weakness by the other families.
After reading the book and watching the film I have one question. Carlo was messily garroted by Clemenza. How did Michael stage his death/ disguise the cause of Carlo’s death for the funeral? Was his murder blamed on another family? I don’t recall this being explained. Connie clearly knew but no one paid attention. I wonder what Don Vito would have done?

Most Iagree with, but in the end, I don't believe Michael totally knew Carlos part fully until he admitted it.
Confession did not sealed his fate. His fate was sealed before. It was quite obvious that Carlo was the traitor. Too convenient for him. Sonny hated him. Carlo was casted out. Humiliated. And suddenly that day Sonny went to beat more brains out of Carlo he was ambushed and killed. Too obvious even without direct evidence. So confession saved Carlo from immeasurable pain through torture. They would anyway take facts out of Carlo's crippled body.
INCORRECT! When Tom informs Vito of Sonny's fate his reply is, "I want ALL inquiries made."
