The fact that you worked your thesis from Mass Extinction Debates into this video about a memey survey is iconic. Much love from the States!
Mildly disappointed you haven't ended this video with another game of rock paper scissors, thus keeping the cycle going and generating infinite content
I remember I first saw your channel when you released your paraworld video like 4 years ago. Maybe that makes me a bit biased then when I say the best thing about this channel is just how eclectic it is: one day it's something about the history of a boardgame, the next some video game you've worked on for years, the next a maths lesson. Sharing your interests in the way you've been doing has been really appealing to me, I'm happy that you're making more of what you want to make and not just chasing whatever was previously most successful.

This
Making an amazing mega-documentary, having KZread actually pick it up and boost it for once, only to stick to “I’m just doing this for fun, and another video of that type isn’t what I want to do right now.” Is genuinely amazing to see. Forcing the creative process never leads to a good result in the long run, and it’s nice that there are still creators out there who manage to avoid succumbing to YT’s pressure to feed the algorithm. Excited to see the new projects! Maybe some won’t be for me, but then so be it. Your channel has a statistically significant chance of me enjoying a new video, and so being subscribed is beneficial to me. Doesn’t mean everything needs to suit my needs exactly, nor that I will stop watching anything if the content I like isn’t always there. Anyway, always think for yourself and have a nice day everyone!

I'm taking a screenshot of this comment, cus this is the definition of healthy media consumption, and creator-consumer relationship. Thank you for commenting this.
Honestly, I think you hit the nail on the head for the reason why so many people won/lost vs tied in RPS. Given that negative results for events are remembered better than positive and meh results. (Also, saying that I "lost" to a prerecorded video is a little funny. Maybe jokesters account for at least 2%~ of losses?)

I have a feeling that another smaller reason is if there's any of the three that stick out in people's heads more as they're about to choose it's the thing they said last. Also maybe that the scissors were positioned in the hand the viewers brains would have mapped as theirs
More importantly WHY win Rock paper scissors.

Cuz win=cool
Your video essays are a gift to humanity. Let me be selfish and say that you should keep on producing them regardless. We oh so need Prometheus like figures
I didn't participate, but I always took you as a "paper" guy. Rock is what someone puts out if they forget to change their hand signs or otherwise fumble on "shoot," and the entire theory of what I pick in a RPS match depends on what I think my opponent is going to pick based on what they think of me, and what they think of themselves-- if I were a youtuber trying to beat the most amount of people possible with a prerecorded video, I'd pick Paper, because I'd imagine the most amount of people would pick Rock. If I wanted to beat you, who I'd assume was playing Paper and not thinking about beating the overthinkers like me, I pick scissors. But you picked rock. It's still probably reporting bias though.

I would have guessed too, taking adventage of rigidness.
I vaguely remember that the best move to start a RPS is to start with rock, because people unknowingly think that scrissors are sharp, therefore they are more hurtful or something. And for second move paper is better because they just follow what beat them. Idk where I got this knowledge or if it is true or not. I just throwing in my 2 cents
Congratulations on finally beating out the popularity of the 5D Chess With Multiverse Time Travel video with your Mass Extinction video, always wondered when you'd finally manage it.
I've been a big fan of your content for a while and Im so lad your getting more exposure on youtube, your Mortal engines videos are some of my favorite on this platform. I cant wait for your new content.
On your future content, all I know is I keep coming back to the 5D Chess and FTL videos. To my eyes you've done great stuff in all your delves into media, be it movies, books or these videogames.
If you're just doing this to have fun, don't feel the need to update us!

updating can be fun
Noooooo please don't leave I've seen hundreds of science KZread essayists and although you have the least subs you're my favourite ive loved yours the most BY FAR, the effort you put into the theory of knowledge aspect and the importance of proper analysis of information is vital in this day and age. Please dont stop!!!!!!!😢
I really hope you do another 5D chess style video, although I realise that’s pretty hard since no other game really exists that’s like it. I thought about using my limited game dev and even more limited 5D knowledge to make something similar, to see if I could get another video out of you, but seems unlikely :( Anyways good luck with the channel, whatever direction it goes in

Never gonna miss the mark with 5D Diplomacy :tf:
My strategy for 2/3s is always rock then scissors. Even when i was a kid i noticed most people seem to start with scissors
i watched you since that Diplomacy video and i will probably watch and love anything you put on this channel keep it up man Althought a time travel video by you does sound most interesting
It's actually really interesting that people who tied were WAY more likely not to comment at all, but winners and losers reported at pretty similar rates.
Honestly, the projects you talked about sound excellent and delightful
Omg... in what moment of my life I missed you uploading a documentary on massive extinctions??? I'm running to give it a look 🏃
Man it does not matter what you do to me, I discovered you with the video essays, but your videos have such a quality that I won't mind remaining here even for shorter formats
It’s completely fair to branch out! Looking forward to it!
How have I been waiting for another video from you and then miss this by a month?!
Best of luck in your endeavors! I'll be here eagerly awaiting whatever the future brings
I absolutely love your videos essays and I will wait for them to come out. That being said I would watch at least half of those videos.
Just came back to your channel, after this video I am turning all notifications on, love your stuff. Edit: spelling corrections
One more aspect I would bet plays into the fact that you won such a large proportion against scissors would be that there was only one round. The study you reference had people play 100 rounds each, which more or less brought all 3 options to around a third. In that same study they found people’s starting throws were least often rock at 22%, and most often paper at 40%, with scissors not far behind at nearly 38%. I would continue to wager given that this was explicitly a study about rock paper scissors that the participants were putting more thought into their moves than the general person who just randomly plays RPS. Purely anecdotally, I’m very good at rock paper scissors. I’ve literally won tournaments. The grand majority of people start with scissors or rock in my personal experience, and it’s often easy to tell which they’ll pick based on a short conversation. Again, in my purely anecdotal experience, if the person views rps as inherently silly, ie someone older or someone who doesn’t really care for games or someone who just isn’t focused, they’ll almost always start with scissors, probably just because it’s the last thing you say.
Hey Oliver! Good luck with whatever you choose to do next, I know I'll at least watch it! As long as you enjoy working on it, it'll show in the quality!
I subscribed from your category theory video, not your mass extinction debates video, so I am pleased for more math content
Too bad for long format, anyhow I like all your videos so thank you.
I just appreciate your content so I can’t wait!
I hope you have a great time trying out some new things. I would be lying if I said I was not a little sad but really, I just love all the content you make, and I cannot wait to see it. And if it never comes out well, I understand :) I personally will stay subscribed to this channel till I die.
Yeah, when watching the video I do recall me choosing Rock. And honestly I think it's very likely Rock is the most popular choice, tho underreported. Because, I think most people who learned a bit about Rock Paper Scissors will intuitively choose Rock. Because we all know Scissors is the most popular opening and Rock beats Scissors. Calculating the likely hood of opening with Paper is way too complicated. So most will just pick the safe opener and go with Rock. But yeah, no one would report it since a tie is way too boring lol.
The Mass Extinction video was good and I watched the whole thing like most of your videos (I've been a subscriber for years because of Thrive), but honestly, as I finished it, I still thought it could have been cut more, though idk if you did that to keep it understandable to a more general audience. I would suggest setting a soft cap of about an hour on your videos, as it's on one hand still long enough to have a lot of detail, but also short enough that it should get more engagement and be less burnout inducing on you (hopefully, I could be underestimating your editing perfectionism).
lol I followed you yesterday for your satirical story telling style yesterday.
Screw KZread indeed! I'll watch anything you post...it's YOUR channel, and I love what you do. Cheers from an Aussie grandma! 🙃
Whatever you make, we're excited to see it!
I AM WAITING, OLIVER. DO NOT TRY TO LEAVE, I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE, OLIVER.
I'm glad you're not sacrificing your mental stability to appease the algorithm.
At some point it will be possible to hold your breath until your next long form documentary.
i was thinking exactly that and im so glad you brought it up, i 100 percent think its sampling bias! i myself would have done the same if i had watched the video (i didnt wanna)
yeah! Be kind to yourself! You owe as nothing and I'm here for every minute of it. Take as much time as you need I can't wait to see whatever the heck it is pops out of this channel next.
Good. Look after yourself. You owe us nothing, seriously. Thanks for everything you have made so far and I look forward to watching whatever you happen to make next.
Nah, you're just really good at rock paper scissors.
Hope to see you again soon!
Honestly, I subscribed to your channel because of you and your thoughts; your videos are consistently entertaining and interesting. What’ll the next video be about? Who knows? I don’t care! How long will it be? Who knows? I don’t care much. (I will say IMHO your style lends better to longer-form content, but totally works and is still great with shorter videos) Will I find it interesting or entertaining? Probably both! I subscribed because of Oliver, not to get more of the same. The 5D chess video is what hooked me on this channel, (and is probably still my personal favorite video of yours), but after seeing a second video (the diplomacy one), I decided to subscribe because of Oliver, not because of any one topic

Clarification: by “longer form” I mean 20+ minute videos. Perhaps not the best word choice in the wake of Mass Extinction, but it’s worth clarifying. Also, after re-reading my comment, (and KZread being uncooperative about editing), I think my wording overemphasized the length of the videos. I personally care less than my previous comment may lead one to believe. But also, this is only one viewer’s thoughts. How many people feel similarly? I don’t know! We’ll see if anybody likes my comment.
figured I should say something, erm... I Wish you all the best in what you do next, the satirical skit about maths sounds good, probably just bias because it's how I found your channel.
I just rewatched the extinction video and I thoroughly enjoyed it again; your comments about being a singular person and taking on too much makes me wonder if you might be better suited as a team player for a channel which involves a lot of research, for instance Milo Rossi recently expanded his team, it's the sort of thing your work seems well suited for
keep it up and realy take you time with it!
I've subscribed because of a "your mom" joke with 9 minutes of build up so I sure am not unsubscribing because you're going to make more unpredictable but fun for you stuff
Dude, a 3 year arts uni and a 4 month long, 2 final year projects destroyed me for more than a year. Of course you'd feel drained from a MEGA doc! Take your time dude! If it makes you feel any better, how about showcasing another obscure game you love much like your Thrive video but much, much sorter? Or even just a YT Short of one. Heck, I'd enjoy another rock, paper, scissors game with you!
I can't wait for more! 😃
I am looking forward to the new videos.
Looking forward to any content 😊
Literally watched the original Asimov video last night. Damn, fortunate timing
Hey Oliver, you should read the books of Cixin Liu. Specifically I recommend the wandering Earth collection, and the 3 body series
You’re so close to breaking out. If you’d like some tips on how to streamline production let me know. You’re entertaining with a modicum of knowledge and intellect (😉) and that a rare thing on KZread!
This is what CGP Grey did!
"screw you KZread" is why I'm a loyal viewer.
keep on keeping on.
Sounds like it might be time for a psychology degree
Congrats on the win. Don't remember if I commented what I got, but I probably lost.
Considering that you’re branching out your content a bit, I figure you could play this niche game you’ve probably never heard of called Thrive. Maybe you could stream yourself playing it for like an hour or something. Who knows, maybe you’ll be in the mood to make a video essay about it after playing it, maybe one about its development, just a thought though
Damn. I learn of this video only from my YT feed. I decide to guess scissors. I lost to a YT video from back in time. Also yes, this is my thinly veiled opinion on the bias hypothesis given.
See you in the future
1:55 Sharp stabby object.
with only 96 samples, it's entirely possible that you just got that by random chance. I can put 30 lands in my 60 card deck and still draw zero fucking lands in my opening hand after shuffling for five minutes.
It might also be that Rock is considered the stereotypical dumb choice, so most people either choose paper because they think you're dumb, or scissors because they think you aren't and therefore will obviously not take the dumb choice
Nice👍
I agree. I'm pretty sure it's skewed because of your reasoning.
Yay
Is the chemical element venadium? Because it looks oddly familiar
will you do 6D chess
I love how you get million of views, then upload again and get 700 lmaaao
Im playing rock paper siccors with cdp grey
i don't have thoughts
Ring the bell :D
I had picked scissors
cya then
Playing rock paper scisdors against a prerecorded video sounds kinda lonely^^
do it slow and you'll glow :)
I was one of those who chose scissors
rock
Not seen it, paper? I thought you would have paper and win?
is the show accurate?
Given all your videos are either music or about a random topic occasionally related to something else (mostly mammoths and dinosaurs so far...), just continue picking stuff you find interesting at random, and I'll stay here, hoping you pick something I like, and silently judge you if you dont. I wish you luck trying to keep this hobby interesting to you. In that aim, I suggest you stop reading comments, including this one.
Very
33% of time, I win all the time
I have a serious question. Would you date someone who is less intellectually gifted than you ?
O
Hey algorithm or no algorithm I personally will still be here. 1 viewer does count, doesn’t it? No? Uh. Still.

BTW the extinction debates video is so long I can’t muster strength to watch it to the end; it slowly simmers in the browser’s tab purgatory.

And then cgpgrey stole your video and did it better
