I do like how he sung the bit before, but he needs to make that high note quieter. One of the reasons hitting that note can be hard is because you have to hit it softly and quietly. You can tell he tries not to belt it, but it comes out louder than the other notes he was singing right before that. He’s a great singer, but it’s not the best. That’s just my opinion though. If you think he’s the best then you do you. As long as we can both agree that Colm just can’t do Phantom well.
Ramin Freakin Karimloo. His rendition of Music of the Night is just all around heart melting and heart wrenching at the same time.
Ramin’s “close your eyes” is.........wow. I cannot believe him.
Norm Lewis and John Owen Jones. Man oh man.
I honestly didn’t know it was pianissimo this whole time. I thought the men just couldn’t be as loud in head voice as in chest voice. I should note that the first version of phantom I saw was Ramin Karimloo, 25th anniversary.

I gotta say, I think Anthony Warlow takes the gold here. I have always thought there needs to be little/no bravado on that high note. It just sounds so much cleaner as a steady single note and Anthony frickin NAILS it!
Mike Crawford-❤️👏🏻 Ben Crawford-Only the sore part he nailed Lewis-I always love the man’s voice, fits so good with the phantom Rauch-Really good Jo-sang - Ok but good Jöback- A bit high Wilkinson- He’s better as Jean Veljean Warlow-Decent Jun-mo - Great control on he’s voice Jones-Fantastic! Barbour- Nailed it! Seok Yoon/Rossen- Need to find better words for awesome Hyles- Holy Shit Caleb’s in here! Holmann-Weakest so far Cudia-Good hold Panaro-👏🏻 Forster-👏🏻 Carpenter-Too quiet for me Little-Decent Butler- Oh boy, stepping into the past with him ah? Look, he’s not the best and I’m probably the only one that likes him in the movie. Karimloo-Like Lewis, love he’s voice.

@greetingsgoodsir8143

Also Caleb killed it, Carpenter is better as a louder, more outwardly intimidating role, like Javert, and let’s talk about Butler. Butler’s not really a singer, but he’s...OK. I just don’t think he has the ability at his level to really sell the Phantom, since it’s such a not-easy-ish role. The film just really isn’t that great of an adaptation, it sits in that valley with Les Miserables. There are a few decent parts, but it’s nothing special at best, and abhorrent at it’s worst.
I see you saved the best for last. Ramin is truly the angel of music 😭💙

Maybe this is just me, but I feel like Anthony Warlow is seriously underrated! There's just something about the tone of his voice that is really appealing to me. The others are awesome too (with the exception of Ben Crawford, who is still good, but his vibrato is a little much for me), but the skill in Warlow's voice just doesn't match up with the reception he's getting, at least to me.

I actually love Anthony's voice, he's in one of my favorite underrated musicals (Jekyll and Hyde)
My personal favorite is Ramin, but John Owen Jones and Colm Wilkinson are also absolutely fantastic and emotion-inducing.
JOJ is the best when it comes to the 'soar'
Ramin is my favorite Phantom, although JOJ is superb. I think the reason why I love Ramin's Phantom is that a lot of the other portrayals of that character focus on the "Phantom", a killer and monster. Ramin's Phantom focuses a lot on Erik and his insecurities. Yes, he did do some horrible things, but you still sympathize with the character because Ramin humanizes him.
1 John Owen Jones 2 Earl Carpenter 3 Colm Wilkonson 4 Ramin Karimloo 5 Norm Lewis They also did great in Les Mis ;3;
I must admit that in THIS video, the selection of voices are much better than in the previous one. Regardless, the majority of the voices are either too deep, too gruff, or just off a bit. Admittedly, John Owen-Jones brings a softness and warmth to his singing as does Ramin Karimloo.
Repost of (approximately) my previous comment: Best are Norm Lewis, John Owen Jones, and Stig Rossen. They nailed the pianissimo. Many of the others just did the falsetto, and called it a day. Just because your falsetto is a little softer than your regular voice doesn’t mean it’s actually piano. Edited to add that Peter Hofmann doesn’t sing in falsetto, but does make an attempt at piano. It’s a different take on the note than is usually done, and I’m honestly not a fan.

Yeah, I had a problem with a lot of them because they sang high but not softly which is I guess what you just said only in my simple talk, lol. But thanks for putting it into better words. Also, I know there's better recordings of Michael Crawford singing it... he's unsurprisingly the first person I heard singing it and in the recordings he got it just right.

Your average Witchy child I was holding the position that these were the best pianissimo notes. That isn’t to say that there weren’t other good performances here, just that the guys I listed did (I think) the best when it came to the very specific criteria of making the note as soft and quiet as possible. My personal favorites are Ramon Karimloo and James Owen Jones. Two very different singers, very different styles, and yet both have that same ephemeral quality to them that I find to be so very intrinsic to this particular aria.

Ramin, the one and only, the best Phantom ever
The Korean dude (Han) amazing but Karimloo is my fave oh my goodness he is good at singing
The way that norm lewis matched his pitch to the music was just beautiful 💙💙👏🏾👏🏾
While Ramin is my favorite phantom I’ve seen, John Cudia gave me chills. It wasn’t so much the quality of the note he sang but more how he led up to it. Ramin performed this note next to Sierra which gave the note more intimacy. Cudia made me feel that intimacy without being next to Christine, and that was impressive to me
Freaking RAMIN I cant-
Ramin Karimloo has the most beautiful soul ever to exist in this world! This man is the true Angel of Music
Hugh Panero, for one reason and one reason only: Close your eyes. BREATH. Let your spirit start to soar. These are called sentences, instructions even. Have you ever had a conversation that went "close your eyesLEt.. your spirit start BREATH to soar". Acting, folks. Let's make the lyrics make sense shall we. And Hugh proves that you can still hold the gentle note beautifully at the end of a longer phrase, hell, OG Michael Crawford didn't even breathe between the two phrases!
@TheUltimateDavyGravy

as well as just,, having a beat at the end of "close your eyes" gives Christine time to react, the audience to hear and process it, and the connectedness of the second sentence really actually makes closing your eyes worth it cause the sentences itself soars. feels more genuine

No one has perfected this part as well as John Owen Jones. Period!
The best is Anthony Warlow. Let me explain. I went and saw him years ago, and shit was going down in that performance. Christine wasn’t doing so hot that day cause right before he hit that pianissimo note, girl passed right out. My dude continued to sing while he was carrying her off the stage, and his voice didn’t waver. Like my guy bent down, picked her up, and carried her across the stage to the other side. Like what?? How??? It’s hard to sing that note and here he is doing that while carrying a girl across the stage. I’m sorry, but Anthony Warlow is a god. End of discussion.

The thing about pianissimo is you have to expand, and support MORE using the smallest amount of air, for proper cord closure. But it’s not a straining of expansion, it’s big like falling into the ocean, and the voice is a tiny gold coin in All that space. The best part about this scene is that the technique matches the text. “ close your eyes let your spirit start to soar” That’s pianissimo! That’s sustain! 💗
Karimloo will be the death of me

that tranSITION WOAH
My picks are Michael Crawford, Ben Crawford, Young Seoul Yoon, Anthony Warlow, James Barbour, Peter Hofmann, Ramin Karimloo
Forgive me, I'm not an expert on music or singing, but I know what I like. After listening to all of these fabulously talented singers twice, I made a list of what it was that made me make my choices. 1. Full voice - when it gets to the "Close your eyes..." part, I liked it better with full voice, not high whispering. 2. Vibrato - some singers use vibrato for the full "Soar" note, others sing it steady and use vibrato at the end. I like melodic vibrato for the whole note. 3. Holding the note as long as they can - I like it better when they can hold it a loooooong time. 4. Power - I want to HEAR the "Soar" note, not have it whispered. 5. Just a personal preference, but those who go right for the "Soar" note at correct pitch sound like they are straining to get there, but those who go in slightly low in pitch and then quickly build up to correct pitch sound so much better to me. The 3 who meet all those criteria are: 1. Ramin 2.Colm. 3. Peter Joback. As for who had the purest "Soar" note, regardless of everything else: Brad Little.
My favorite song from any musical
Michael Crawford period. He is the phantom.
