Gerard Butler was done dirty because the studio at the time couldn't afford some voice lessons for him, y'all had all the time in the world and you did this man dirty just so everybody on the internet can read him to filth years later. y'all are messy, petty, and shady for that
My god, both are wonderful in their own ways, aren’t they? Michael is more smooth and ghostlike, whereas Gerard is rougher and more physical. Michael has a very elegant and refined voice, and Gerard a rich, deep voice that I fully believe could be elevated to new heights; if only people would not be so cynical about him! As for the lyrics, I can’t decide which set I like more. Michael’s set, I feel, was more clever and witty, but within the context of the musical, it’s a bit too explicit about how the Phantom is not to be trusted. Gerard’s set is more romantic, more fantastical, more hopeful. Almost more persuasive; who wouldn’t want to go to a place (or be in a state of mind) where you,deep down, know you truly long to be? Rather, who doesn’t wish that the world was a place you would long to be? Music can truly set you free and open up your mind. So may literature and art. They all give shape to our dreams. Beautiful editing job; it almost made me faint at the prospect of two wonderful Phantoms pining for my love. I simply can’t decide when they are next to each other ❤️.

Definitely a fantastic observation. The inspiration for the edit came from when some of the past phantoms sang together at the 25th anniversary, neither Crawford or Butler took part in the performance of music of the night, but since they’re my favorite Phantoms, I wanted to know what they’d sound like together. Plus I really like the instrumentation of the highlights album and when Crawford sings in a certain part early on where the phantom is usually silent. “Helpless to resist the notes I write, for I compose the music of the night.” I started with the audio and added the footage later. I’ve done other phantom edits as well, though this one is the best. I may consider posting the others one day.

@Esmeralda And you clearly misunderstood that I was not intending to project the idea that I hate Erik. Didn’t I say that I nearly fainted at the prospect of “two WONDERFUL Phantoms pining for my love”( I even said that both were wonderful in their own ways and I described how different and unique they were)? I am well aware that he taught Christine to hone her talents and that he loved her; when I said that he was not to be trusted, I was referring to how the idea that he is an Angel is not to be trusted. He deceived Christine into believing that he was some holy figure; the lyric set that Michael sang should have clued Christine into the truth earlier. He is supposed to be an “Angel of Music”, yes? Micheal’s lyrics said “music is deceiving” and “ close your eyes, for your eyes will only tell the truth”. I think those phrases, at the very least, spark the stirring of a small bit of doubting. I’m not very much a fan of Raoul as I don’t really like the “perfect pretty prince” stereotype. I prefer people with passion, but given the choice between the Phantom and Raoul, I would be at a loss. The Phantom murdered people, but Raoul is asinine. What do I do?

Sorry :( I got you found both wonderful, just the "he is not to be trusted" that i got out of context. And yes he wasn't an angel at all, i mean, at least not literally 🌚🌚 Raoul actually forces Christine to put herself in danger and was willing to kill Erik for no reason, in the novel he's much worse. The musical kind of romanticized Raoul's actions when they are gruesome in the novel! Well, Erik murdered a creepy harrasser and an arrogant doll of Carlotta. I think that doesnt make him evil. Questionable and impulsive? Definitely, but not evil at all. In the novel he's waaaay more sympathetic (in my opinion, some consider the musical version to be more sympathetic), he doesn't pretend to be Gustave Daae either.

This is beautiful!! What an awesome editing job you did!! I have seen Phantom on stage many times and I love Michael as the Phantom. The musical is brilliant and perfection. But to me, the movie was an absolute masterpiece!! It deserved so many accolades that it sadly didn’t get and it angers me that Gerard was blasted for his portrayal as Phantom. He was just brilliant!! His acting was top notch and his si hung was beautiful and fit the character. Phantom never had formal training, so it made sense that his voice would be rougher, but have a soft side to it when singing to Christine. The movie was so romantic. The movements on stage are always more pronounced and exaggerated so the whole audience can see and enjoy. But with a movie set, it can be what Andrew Lloyd Webber envisioned. The movie is gorgeous. The sets, the lighting, the costumes, the locations….all to perfection. Gerard’s Phantom is a passionate, lost soul who craves love and acceptance. His portrayal of Phantom was so passionate and believable that you were really wanting them to be together. Thank you for this beautiful video. Phantom is my favorite musical/movie ever. This did both such great justice!! ❤️

@@zoe9690 the age gap SHOULD be concerning. What Gerard and recent productions have made the audiences forget is that the Phantom isn’t supposed to be a good match in any way. He’s a sigma dude, socially misaligned, and a predator - who’s simply haunting and beautiful in his performance and voice. That’s the tragic discrepancy. If you make him too much of a sexy hunk or all humanized and rock-n-roll harsh in his voice, then you strip away that discrepancy that defines his character. His music and sheer (somewhat innocent) passion are his ONLY redeeming factors. Honestly we should be unsettled by the Phantom, but drawn in regardless. He’s not some hot young dude who’s perfectly compatible except for his face burn. He’s a messed up, unsettling, creepy, tragic dude. (And I love it all to death)
@BeWiL0991
2 жыл бұрын
@@zoe9690 and on top of that, the “monster” that he is is what society created him as, which isn’t the truest tragedy. But regardless of it being or not being his fault, he’s not really a good or safe or desirable person beyond his haunting performances. He’s killed, he’s murdered, he’s predatory, he manipulates, and he controls. We can’t let the romanticizing of the character make us forget that. And again the discrepancies make it all the more tragically beautiful of a story.

The Phandom is surely a mistake. You can't love a broken flawed man that some beasts will come to jump into your neck and scream about how much saint they are. For the two people that answered me: In the novel, Erik was forced to kill people in Persia, where he was TORTURED, it wasn't his fault. Aside from that, he killed Count Phillipe (he deserved it lol) in SELF-DEFENSE. Joseph killed himself and the woman from the chandelier was an accident. Erik was a good, sweet and broken man, who lived in a cruel society full of people LIKE YOU. In the musical, he killed 3 evil monsters that deserved it. He was right. Erik is a flawed person, but he is kind, soft, lovable and gentle. Both of you are just Antis and purity-police stans that make me laugh :) Erik is soft, gentle and worthy of love.

I think he would have been great for the part - I saw his Royal Albert Hall performance with Sarah Brightman which is also around somewhere here on YT. As far as I can remember he also seems to have been considered for the part in the movie but then the makers of the movie chickened out for some reason and took of Gerard instead. Banderas would have brought something dark and edgy to the part, it's a pity they didn't have him play the part. He would certainly have brought some spice to the Phantom's angrier moments, and that Latin Lover vibe would have added something special to the mix as well. My issue with Butler in the role is precisely that he sounds so much like Crawford - or even attempts to do so, particularly in The Music of the Night. It's precisely the reason why you cannot tell the two voices apart in this video sometimes. The reason I do not cherish Butler's performance the way I do others is that he tries to go by the book and tries to get it just perfect, and it comes across lifeless as a result, because he's scared s***less of doing it wrong. What I like about Crawford's interpretation is not the technical merit - he's far from perfect technically - but the utter fearlessness he brings to the part. He knew he did not fit the conventional mould when they cast him in he part, so he figured out he'd make it even more his own, and he brings a naiveté to the part I would normally not have associated with it. Butler's version comes across a lot the way Steve Harley would have sung it if he had gotten the part, but at the same time he seems to make a desperate effort to sound like Crawford. I do not blame him for doing that and failing, but for not presenting his own version with more courage. The world does not need a second Michael Crawford, but it might just have needed the unique version of Gerard Butler.
Will they mix it with emmy rossum and Sarah brightman?

I think choosing Gerard Butler was overall a very good choice. Yes, you can criticize his vocals, if you want. He is not an opera singer, but for what he lacks in singing talent he makes up for with his acting ability. I personally find Gerard's renditions to be really heartfelt -- something I do not detect in the stage performers. There's a vast difference between an excellent singer and an actor who has singing abilities. The movie is not a musical stage production. It's a film interpretation, and for this reason, the casting had to take into consideration not just vocal virtuosity but acting talent. Everyone who played the Phantom is good at his artistic skills, but Gerard was the one who gave expression, passion, love and life to the Phantom.

My sister and I go back and forth on this issue a lot. While Michael is truly a legend and the play version spectacular and fun to be in the audience and watch all the little details going on all around (Phantom in the rafters running back and forth, box 5, extras in the background) the movie version is a true masterpiece. It is romantic, the sets are gorgeous, the actors all perfect in their roles and the Phantom an ideal choice. Gerard brought to the role what many might miss onstage. His acting was beyond outstanding. His emotions could be felt by all, his joy with Christine, his heartbreak when he realizes she loves Raoul, his anger with being made fun of, his misery with his past. But one thing that sticks out to me is how real they kept his performance. Phantom is NOT a trained singer!! His voice should be rugged and a little rough. He loves the theater but was always in the shadows…watching. He’s basically self-taught. So it fit the role that he wasn’t singing a perfect tone or angelic quality. I felt like Gerard basically got screwed for not getting a nomination for an Oscar for his role. It was AMAZING!! That is one of the most demanding and complicated roles to play, and he pulled it off and then some!! You have to go back and really watch his performance to see that there was no one else that could’ve filled those shoes. Gerard was the perfect Phantom!! ❤️

While I have to give Gérard Butler full marks as an amazing actor, he was unfortunately not well suited for this role. It wasn't the acting that was the problem, simply that he was out of his depth vocally. This particular role is demanding enough for someone with extensive vocal training and skill. I think Michael Crawford, Ramin Kimloo, or even Antonio Bandaras have been better able to handle the music. However, everyone is entitled to have their own favorites, and if the movie phantom is your pick, enjoy. 😀
This is like putting the best with the worst together. Gerard Butler was no Phantom. Terrible voice that even autotune can't save. I actually had to put my hands over my ears a few times.
