    @@TheMsiaddict I think it's sad that no one ever mentions Rebecca Caine in this debate. Maybe it's because she played in the Toronto production so she flies under the radar. Maybe it's because she's better known as the original Cosette in Les Mis. But she's a classically trained lyric soprano, and she slays the cadenza at the end of Think Of Me. Now that I think of it, playing in the Toronto production and being better associated with Les Mis is why Colm Wilkinson is overlooked as a Phantom.

    to be fair, west end was the original! not to mention the point of the song, which basically functions as an aria, is in my opinion to show the immense virtuosity of christine's singing since she has been tutored by the very "angel" of music. she's not supposed to sound completely operatic and 'show-y off' like carlotta certainly is, but there's a middle between the 'pure' musical theatre heroine and the operatic soprano, a vessel for music at its most dramatic and most beautiful. I'd argue that rebecca caines finds that perfect balance in her interpretation of the cadenza which very very sadly isn't included here. there's a wonderful performance of it from her canada run in 1991 which I think stands as the definitive version.

    Emmi Rossum's silky voice, how she manage to, so clean, jump the notes is absolutely fantastic... but Sierra Boggess expression, feeling-delivery, superb acting together with her Amazing Voice and her strong, liveful, yet brittle but Sweet and outbursting Feminine singing -is Just Outstanding!

    They are all amazing, but I’d like to introduce the woman at 0:25, Kim Sohyun. Because she went through same steps as Christine. She was casted for Christine as understudy at first, but as the premiere in Korea got so long, she became alternate actress. At the rerun, she was casted for Christine as a main actress. And now she is one of the divas in Korean theatres.

    Speaking from a classically trained and musical theatre freak perspective, Sierra easily did the best. She showed incredible restraint and time leading up to her stellar climax. Also, acting wise she was the only one I could truly believe. She IS Christine.

    I agree about the acting. When I watched the 25th anniversary thing, I feel like Sierra was the stand out and usually I don't care much about Christine in the musical. I always felt the ALW Christine was a rather boring or one dimensional role (acted hypnotized, act scared, yadayada), but she (Sierra) actually brought depth and made it believable. I could follow what her Christine was feeling/thinking, which was new to me. I think Wishing You Were Somehow Here again was honestly the best part of it. I got a lump in my throat with her "Try to forgive..." It's like I really beLIEVED it. Her life was pretty f--ed up at that moment and I can see Christine even feeling guilty that she might have let her father down in some way, ending up in this mess (even though the Phantom manipulated her, but you get my point). It's the first time I really felt a Christine was feeling guilty for letting her father down and just wanting to be out of the stupid/impossible situation she was stuck in

  • @mackenzieshea4448

    @mackenzieshea4448

    ***** Yes of course there is a huge difference. Opera voices are much bigger with a much heavier vibrato, which is kind of hard to get used to and a bit overwhelming for people who don't usually listen to opera, so for a musical theatre audience it would be much more toned down. Carlotta actually would be the best example in the show(I remember reading somewhere that opera training is required to play Carlotta but of course I could be wrong). Not to mention this is a Broadway show, not an opera, so there are many differences. I posted that comment after seeing a few videos of Sierra in Masterclass, in which she portrays an opera student in a much more similar style to the real thing. Still not perfect, since the character is a student, but closer (I was thinking about this when I wrote the comment, so I was thinking about the wrong example, so sorry, that one's on me). Going back to my original comment, In the Phantom of the opera book, Christine is closer to 17, however the part is usually played by an actress in her early to mid 20s. Going back to characterization, Sierra does not sound 17, but does sound and act more like a young woman who got a chance of a lifetime to sing on stage. She doesn't show off too much and has a very satisfying buildup the climax of the song compared to the others in the video, many of whom shoot up to it much too quickly.

    +mackenzie shea, I know this isn't the main point of the debate you're having...but literally where in the original book does it say Christine is 17? I've read the original in French, too, and don't recall it saying that. I think one of the translations (Leonard Wolffs) kind of jacks something up translation-wise which might allude to her being younger, but that's not really what was intended. The only ages I remember being made clear were Raoul (21) and Philippe (41, since he's 20 years older). Christine's age was never specified, so I always assumed she was close to Raoul's age. And if they met as kids in Perros-Guirec, I somehow doubt Raoul was, like, 11 and she was 7 (just as an example)...they would probably have to be close in age for their little summer romance/friendship to work. I think Christine is supposed to be young, like 20, but not a teenager. But seriously, if you can point to where it says she is 17 (edition, page number, chapter, all that) I will be more than happy to know! Because maybe I missed it all these years, haha

    @Kam 90 the overwhelming amount of theatre critics would also appreciate other Christine dae, just as much, if not more than Sierra. I've never heard of a theatre critic jump the wagon of Sierra boggess is the best Christine ever and is a goddess, quite as much as I've seen fans. I've seen tons of them have problems with her pronunciation and singing ability, so don't speak for people. Not saying she doesn't have glowing reviews by other critics, but there is nothing there in their words that makes her stand as superior to the rest of the Christines. I'm not denying that she's a good singer, I'm saying she's pretty overrated as a soprano (and extremely underrated as a mezzo-soprano) She'd make top ten in the Christine competition but I don't actually see her being best or even second best.

    Christine Daaé is a character that if you only read the script, can be boring; the actresses truly complete the character. And when you have people playing Christine as a shy and reserved girl like Emmy did, I feel Christine is missing something. A spark, it feels quite empty. Sierra plays such a PASSIONATE Christine that she gives the character depth beyond the script! Yes, Emmy may fit the idea of what Christine should LOOK like, still, her voice and performance are bland. Have you seen the scene for "Think of Me" in the movie? It's empty. I wish they could have used the original Brightman soundtrack instead of the recordings they used. ALW wrote the musical with her voice in mind and I think the original cast recording version is the perfect blend of Broadway and Opera. Also, they should compare who sang the song, overall, better. The climax is the most operatic part of the song and if they sang the whole song operatic then they sang it wrong, because it would have sounded just the same as Carlotta, which we all know the Phantom doesn't like.

Probably the most accurate in terms of historical authenticity of the period. People might say she sounds too overblown like Carlotta, but that's what an opera-going public would expect to hear in those times. I do like everyone else here, too, even Emmy. My favourite is Sierra, she is clean, not showy and actually gentle on the top notes. Sarah Brightman has such harsh note entrances! Is she trying to stab my ears? And her really fake wide and sometimes oddly slow vibrato drives me NUTS, and can make her seem off pitch, especially combined with the stabby belt-y thing she does. (It is somehow in TIME TO THE MUSIC in Phantom of the Opera on the Orignal Cast Recording, if you know how natural vibrato works, you know this must be fake), just a bit of natural shinner is all you need. A lot of the others are essentially doing Brightman impersonations because she originated the role and they think that's how it's supposed to be played. It was written for her, but since Webber had married her after an affair during which both were married to other people I tend to question his judgment wrt her.

I never have the words to describe why her voice is so grating to me but you said it well. in addition, the overly showy arm movements and facial expressions also make these notes “look” more strenuous than need be. we clearly see many of these other sopranos hitting them just fine without all of that weird physical posturing.. plus theirs are not nearly as... nasal? overly rounded? not sure of the correct terminology to describe it but something about her resonance is always jarring to me

    I grew up on the OLC and Sarah Brightman's version, but Sierra Bogguss's is just about even for me. Part of what others miss is the character development. Christine is unsure of her talent and this is a wake-up call. To be too over the top is to fail to get that. Honestly it is hard to pick between Sierra and Sarah because they are both so amazing at being Christine. But in my personal opinion, Sierra is the best at this particular song. I remember watching the performance for the first time and being in a state of shock I couldn't think or speak for at least 5 minutes. Just remarkable.

    Sierra! Hands down! Followed by Sara! Sierra isn’t over the top too soon. She starts out subtle and leaves the surprise note a surprise until the end. Her vibrato doesn’t even sound like a vibrato, it sounds like two different notes like a trill! Very hard to do! Anyone who has ever sung Mozart professionally knows Mozart loves those trills!

    Sierra takes the cake because she has captured the essence and the character of who Christine is . Christine is nearly a self taught vocalist who dreams of being a lead soprano , therefore, the song is performed entirely in a head voice, although operatic support kicks in heavily in the credenza, the head voice works well with the diction, and makes the beautiful lyrics easily understandable, whereas chest voice distorts many pronunciations, and takes away the simple beauty of the piece. IMO😃 They are all fabulous however, each one of them!!!!!

    The thing I really like about Emmy Rossum's performance is that she sings much softer in the first part, so that when her voice explodes in the penultimate note, it's quite a contrast, which I think is very effective performance-wise. I was also very impressed with Sarah Brightman's original performance. She sang the notes so quickly and yet so clearly enunciated, if that makes sense, and then held the penultimate note for so long. Jaw-dropping. All that said, Sierra Boggess will always be my favorite Christine.

  • @zamyrabyrd
    @zamyrabyrd7 жыл бұрын

    Emmy Rossum has the purest (not cut and pasted) ending. Sarah Brightman sings in general higher than anyone else, going up to a C6 in both clips, but I don't like her too operatic approach. Sierra Boggess finishes also on a high C, much more pleasing to the ears.

    it's just irritating to see her tongue waggle so much, but the first does sound good. Also the Korean's last note doesn't come through like a knock out punch, but as a natural development of the previous two phrases. Some of the singers deliver the the ending as though it is cut and pasted from Aida but how could it be if the rest of the song is winsome and sweet?

    Sierra as Christine there looks a little surprised, & it’s ambiguous whether she’s shocked at how she’s dazzling an audience all on her own &/or that she’s able to perform so well, or both...like, she’s seemingly astonishing herself with her own skills as it’s happening, plus palpably responding to the audience’s warmth towards her even while ostensibly directing her plea to bigwigs. Sierra conveys a TON of character layers there, digging out all this complexity in a character flatly written, often interpreted passively & played as an archetypal ingenue rather than genuinely hopeful gamine wannabe-starlet beginning her adult life. This is a wee clip from a lighthearted almost frivolous part of what is considered a frothy melodramatic extravaganza, & nevertheless soooo muuuuuch is going on in her performance-all while she’s killing it with her singing! It probably happens in most crafts/professions; it does in mine (won’t be specific, but I’m not a musician or in theatre)...anyways...there are moments when you can be doing or creating or theorizing something you’ve been putting a lot of yourself into, likely with a practice around it, where you literally do not recognize what is coming out of you bc it feels like something more powerful is just ✨pouring✨thru you; you’re just a conduit for this song or transplant or story; you’re simply momentarily being entrusted to communicate this by whatever bigger Mystery certain creative impulses come from, & you’re tasked with serving it as well as you can, as imperfect as you are. It’s such an intense weird complicated emotion-ecstatic, scary, beautiful, eerie, & on+on-that rarely happens, gets shared even less frequently, usually only with colleagues as part of the fellowship of craft, 🤔 & I think a lot of creative people feel it a few times early on then spend a lot of the rest of their lives trying to figure out how to replicate it or permanently live in that state. My pet theory is that’s why people seem to describe creative/constructive endeavours in terms that often sound spiritual or oddly sexual. Personally I think you probably can’t or shouldn’t chase those experiences, just practice what you do in a way that leaves room for them to happen. Ugh sorry for being wordy. But I think Sierra is partly performing Christine AS IF Christine was having that experience (along with the rest of what the scene’s supposed to be about doing)-not that it’s happening to Sierra in that moment, but she’s using her experiences of it in her portrayal of Christine- & that’s just f*cking fascinating to me that she 1) can convey such an elusive uncommon contradictory emotion, & 2) made that a layer of her interpretation. She automatically makes Christine 1000x more interesting than almost any other performer in the role.
