Who's Bad? Wolfgang Unzicker vs Bobby Fischer | 1962 Varna Olympiad Final-A

This is a Round 7 game from the 1962 Varna Olympiad Final-A between Wolfgang Unzicker and Bobby Fischer. Fischer played black in the featured game, and opted for the Sicilian Defense, Najdorf variation. The d5 weakness Fischer inherits after playing e5 must be taken great care of, as otherwise the game could easily become yet another example of white obtaining a good knight vs a bad bishop. In addition to the battle surrounding d5 and the key minor piece exchanges to welcome/avoid, I found Fischer's use of the a-pawn particularly instructive. Lastly, a fairly rough thought/question entered my mind from this game..."Which colored enemy bishop is more annoying to a king who has only 2 pawns (rook/knight) as his shelter when major pieces are still present?".

Not just storming through the moves, but explaining every idea behind them, looking at alternative lines for more than a move or two and offering a good insight into the thought processes. This is deep - please share more of it! Three chess rules that I understood better: 1. not exchanging the opponents bad piece (white knight on b3) and keeping it in paralysis, is almost as effective as capturing it. 2. use pawn-protected squares as pivot points, converting piece dominance into favourable pawn structure / pawn adavancement in case of exchange. 3. allowing the opponent's strongest white piece to operate from a dominant position may be a justified concession if your own queen is simultaneously targeting a (bishop-supported) weak square around the opponent's king (f2).

When I was ready to return to work I realized that I wasn't qualified for much other than working retail. Fast forward a few years later and I got a degree in finance and today I work in asset management as an analyst. I also work from home 100%. Thank you for your fantastic analysis of those matches. Just your take on how the value of various pieces is usually made is awesome. E.g. a bishop unobstructed in the centre four squares has 13 free positions to move to but cornered only seven. So, giving it a static three-point of value can get you really off course.
