Carlsen defeats Ivanchuk’s Grünfeld effortlessly
This analysis features the chess game between 16-year-old Magnus Carlsen and Vasyl Ivanchuk from the 2007 Linares tournament. The opening is a Grünfeld Defense, Exchange with Carlsen deploying his knight to e2. Ivanchuk justifies Rc1 by exchanging c-pawns, thus giving Carlsen an ever so slight plus. Carlsen’s h-pawn advance produced multiple attacking ideas, and ultimately provoked exploitable weaknesses on Ivanchuk’s kingside.

i sometimes forget how much of a beast young magnus was, it's kind of crazy to think that for nearly 20 years he's been producing these "effortless" games where he demolishes grandmasters. great video jerry, thanks!

Not just grandmasters, at this point Ivanchuk was still among the best 10-20 players in the world, and only 4 years before he was the second highest rated player in the world.

While he was never exactly world champion level, when you consider how long this Ukrainian grandmaster was a top 20 player (more than 25 years), you realize why he is considered as one of the greatest names in chess history.

I don't care about all those who claim that it is impossible to compare number ones from different generations; Magnus is the best ever!! We are lucky to live in his time because I am pretty sure that a phenomenon like him comes up only once in many decades!!
What a delight to listen to your instructive chess videos!

The way Jerry articulate these is just too good. Ty for the content Jerry. Love it.
Been watching for almost 9 years now love you so much jerr bear
95% accuracy and still outplayed. Wow
Love how you explain current theory along with possible crossroads specially at position where black could have played e5
Just one note: you don't need to be stressed to always find games that bring different concepts. Au contrair: It's always good to consolidate the learned ideas. So yeah, I say yey to repetition of concepts! TY GM.
The plan, as you explained at about th1 19:00 minute mark was very instructive. The choice of squares for the bishop, too.
Another great video, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing your many insights about this game, Jerry. There is no other channel that can give this level of positional understanding in such a clear and concise manner. You're the best 😊

Great coverage. What a good game. Thanks for the coverage.
Even at 16 Magnus was a beast! Thanks again for the wonderfully clear analysis. I really appreciate your careful consideration of lines that weren't played and why, and judicious use of the computer analysis only when helpful. Thanks!
Always enjoy both your commentary AND choice of games to show us. Something about your explanations in this game stood out compared to others. This one was really exceptional. You blended engine preferences with playing out all good options at key moments. I think one of your very best presentations! Thanks as always for great content and promoting chess.
As you said very smooth from the young Carlsen, dare I say an elegantly played game. Thanks Jerry.
Lovely work jerry🎉🎉 treat to watch your videos❤
Well explained, thanks!

The position just after Qc1 was played is featured as an intermediate tactic in "The Woodpecker Method" book!
Why i didn't know your channel before. Thank you very much for the beautiful explanation. You make it sound so exited
Great game thx Jerry
16 year old Magnus casually with 98% accuracy against one of the best
SMOOTH😂 AWESOME CHANNEL
Whenever I hear ," High his is Jerry", I always feel much better. My beer always tastes really good when an intelligent person is explaining things.
Hi Jerry.
What a great game!
Glad you were commentating Jerry, otherwise it looked to a spectator-level player like me 😀, to be a somewhat drab game. To me, Black looked negligent, from move 8, by not playing…PB5: It immediately inhibits White’s Light Bishop, driving him back to the 2nd or home rank; the Knight protects Black’s advanced QBP - the Knight himself being inoculated against attacks by pawns: It’s a crappy post in and of itself, but he could leave once the advanced Pawn’s protection is taken over with 9…PQN4. (This also, not incidentally, safeguards the now hanging Knight against any trick involving QR4ch, since White has no time for it in retreating his Light Bishop.) Anyhow, your commentary did give me a little more appreciation for a positional, Indian game. Thanks Jerry.

Ivanchuk had a 95% accuracy and still lost "smoothly".

These victories without any clear mistake from the opponent are the most beautiful in my opinion.
My naive pattern recognition abilities tells me that if you want to play like a GM, you need to start playing h4/h5 or a4/a5 when it doesn't seem to be doing anything.
I wouldn't say effortlessly :D
I hate playing against the Grunfeld as white. I feel like white has to work their ass off just to not be worse, and in the end all you get is a decent center.
at 16:37 it feels like bishop g7 taking f6 would had been a better move for black. if he takes the bishop back he'll be disconnecting his passed pawns. if he takes the knight on c6 big whoop, bishop d8 protects the queen.

Why not 15. …h5 for Ivanchuk? I don’t see how Magnus will continue the Kingside attack with the pawn stopped.
