    I bought one of these second-hand. It had previously belonged to a NZ motocross champ many years ago. It was modified: at the time, I think he mentioned the pipe was shortened, and the head was shaved. Riding it was a beast of an experience and a lot of fun. The only problem was that when I rode a 250cc or 125cc bike, it felt like I was riding a motorbike with a sewing machine for an engine.

    Bought one in 88 brand new leftover for $2700. Wish I never sold it. Front wheel lift was almost perfectly in sync with roll of throttle. Wish you could get that amount of bike for that price today.

    I've never raced dirt bikes, my friends and I for the most part just rode on trails and in grass and through plowed fields and such, did some hill climbing here and there. My first and only dirt bike (to date) was a like new 4 stroke '77 Honda XR-75 when I was around 13, it was no race bike by any means but it was fun, I think those were more like tractor engines, not much for speed but torquey little bikes. My best friend at the time had a '78 Yamaha 100 Enduro 2 stroke, that was a fun little bike too, we used to race down a little grassy dragstrip and he'd beat mine but not by a long shot. Another good friend had a new(about 1983 I think) Suzuki 80 Enduro, I rode it a few times but wasn't very impressed, not sure what it was but I think I didn't care for the throttle response or something, it seemed to make more noise than power, it was also a 2 stroker. A friend that lived in the neighborhood got a brand new Honda CR 80, it was about a 1983 or 84 model, and his father put a throttle limiter on it and it would still just about come out from underneath you, it was all I could do to keep the front wheel on the ground when that power kicked in, I was 14 or 15 at that time. Down around that time, probably '83, my best friend and his family went down to Cumberlain Lake and took our bikes plus the two that his cousin and uncle brought, a 2 stroke Yamaha 400 dirt bike which I rode, it was a torquey basta** and my friend rode his uncles new Kawasaki 370 Enduro 4 stroker, I didn't ride that one but I rode along side Steve and could tell it was a good running bike, we climbed a few hills down there on them, had a blast!

    ON A POWER VALVE IT SEEMED LIKE IT COULD BUT IT NEVER CAUSED A PROBLEM JUST NOTED DURING PISTON & RINGS, AFTER RIDING FOR SEVERAL YEARS. All three bikes 125, 250, & 500 were, very SIMILAR YOU COULD ALSO ADD A CARTRIDGE KIT FOR THE FORKS FROM KAWASAKI .THE STOCK FORKS REALLY WORKED GREAT WITH CASTROL 10W40 MOTOR OIL IN THEM, SO I HAVE TO SAY with OUT A DOUBT “ KAWASAKI LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL “. From my FIRST KAWASAKI G5 100 IN 1971, UNTIL A 1976 KX 400 TOOK OVER THEN 1981 A KX 420 WHICH WAS A RIOT, AFTER ADDING AN EXTRA THICK BASE GASKET TO CALM IT DOWN A BIT, THEN IN 1987 A KX 125 & 250 these were GREAT RIDE’S . IF YOU WANT SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT GET A KAWASAKI, LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL .😃

    I have jst purchased a 87 kx500 and am replacing the cast piston with a wosneer forged one so am interested in what you mean by window the piston and why? also open up the inlets? cheers from Newzealand .

  • @johnking1381

    @johnking1381

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@victoroneill4381 by open up the inlets I mean file the top of the transfer ports which makes them higher. This increases the time they are open for, like fitting a lumpier cam in a 4 stroke almost. But this was for the 86 motor, the 87 has different port timing. By window the piston I mean literally cutting a whole in the intake side of the piston which coincides with the centre intake port behind the reed valve, this does two things. It increases the amount of oil on your little end bearing, and provides a clearer path for the inlet charge into the chamber, typically this gives a 2.5 hp increase across the rev range. Go with an FMF gnarly desert pipe if you want top end, or FMF gnarly woods pipe for low to mid powerband. Get yourself on kxriders.com, it's all on their with pics, you'll learn loads in the 500 engine mods section. 👍
