@@elitecystuning maybe you misunderstood my comment, which is just an opinion anyway...but I said "beat the sound". I don't care how fast a 4 stroke gets. Its the joy that comes with the hit of a 2 stroke combined with the sound that makes 2 strokes so enjoyable to ride. That being said, I'd put my 88 kx500 that weighs about 225lbs against any other dirt machine on the planet. Win, lose, or wipe out, it puts a smile on my face

I disagree. I rode a very new CR500 back in 1986, and it was (and still is) *way* too dangerous for all but the best riders to open the throttle wide. Nowadays I've got a '06 crf450x tagged, and it is still plenty fast enough to get you killed.

I had that same bike many years ago. LOVED that bike. The way I learned to start the big 500's was to turn on the gas and turn on the choke then lay the bike on the ground until I saw a puddle of gas on the ground then pick it up and kick once and done. Trick worked just as well on my KX500. Cannot remember the year of the KX500 but it was the last year before inverted forks. Was my favorite dirt bike I ever owned.

Don't see people's logic in laying the bike over, all you're doing is emptying the float bowl which gets refilled the instant you pick it back up maybe if it's old fuel in there I can understand that but leaving it filled in the first place for any length of time is a bad idea 🙈

I'm not a big guy like you and I can tell you it was a nightmare to start and it a good way to injure yourself. The power was ridiculous -- not enjoyable on trails. My off road experience was numerous 125cc MX bikes (my first a '75 CR125 new). This 500 is best suited for open high speed riding and sand dunes. I only rode it a couple times and then sold it. I feared it more than the '75 Kaw H2 I had in college in the mid-80s -- that's saying something.

For those who never ridden a 500 especially a cr500 it's a job. The bike takes you for a ride you just hold on tight and hope your buddy's behind you have on plenty of riding gear lol, It will throw boulders lol

Do you have a 1983 CR125R you could do a video on? One of the funnest bikes I ever owned as a teen!! I can't find but one cheesy video on some old junk piece ,, there's nothing about the 83" 125 250. There's a few about the 83'480R. I'd just like to see what one looks like today in profile, and of course a little rippin up the grass for shits and giggles!! Great videos,,, keep em coming ..God bless Kaplan America!!

I have rode a 86 CR 500 it’s a powerful bike but after owning riding a 1984 CR 500 nearly killing myself in a sandpit I figured I would be better off riding a 250 of the reason I like twisting the throttle way to much. One thing is for sure you definitely have to realize respect who’s the boss when you ride the 500s

My old neighbor bought a brand new one when I was a kid. He used to blast it up and down our alley once in a while. Seems like he could go from one end of the block to the other in like 3seconds, with the front wheel off the ground the entire time.
