Who Is The WORST Draft Bust In NFL History?
Спорт
Throughout NFL history, the NFL draft has always been an opportunity for bad teams to get back into super bowl contention with young stars to lead them into the future. But unfortunately, sometimes these players don't live up to expectations and can end up being labeled as "busts". So in this video, we go over three guys, Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, and Jamarcus Russell to finally put an end to the question, who is the worst NFL draft bust of all time? Anyway, if you enjoyed this video at all then like and comment if you want, and you can even subscribe if you think I've earned it.
But if your NFL team ended up on this list as mine did, then don't worry about it, because maybe according to you, the worst draft bust in NFL history isn't even on this list. You could make the case that the 2007 NFL draft was one of the worst NFL draft classes of all time, and had some of the biggest NFL draft busts. This video isn't like one of NFL throwback's hit miss meh ones, instead, it's more of an NFL recap on the careers of each one of these historic NFL busts.

looked at a list and yep Reggie Bush made 62 mil, Calvin Johnson 64, Matt Ryan 70 and Mat Stafford at 72 were the only good ones out of the 10 largest contracts. If JaMarcus Russel was the ONLY instance of this happening, it'd be odd, but most draft players are busts already, now throw mass money and expectations and some bad franchise stay bad because no one want to go there, unless they get paid 70+ million. Or even then they just fucking leave like Calvin Johnson did.

One of the things that is much better about pro football today. Is that rookies do not get the big upfront bonuses like they used to. There is a rookie salary cap. And a player gets paid so much depending on his position and where he is drafted. And that’s it. No real negotiation once a player is drafted. Once they have proven themselves in the professional ranks. Then they can get the big money. There are exceptions to that however. Kyler Murray. He was given the second highest extension of any quarterback in the NFL He has only been in the league for three years. And only play one year in college. He has a career losing record. Choked in his only playoff appearance. He is too short to pass from the pocket, he cannot see over the lineman. he needs to roll out so he can see the receivers downfield. And he does a good job. Plus he is an excellent runner. The fact of the matter is the Kyler Murray is that proven that he does not have the leadership skills or the work ethic to be a top NFL quarterback. This has nothing to do with race. Kyler Murray said in public last winter that his football intellect was so great that he did not have to watch film on his own. By saying that, he disrespected his teammates, his coaches, the Cardinals organization, All football fans and every great quarterback that has played for at least the last 40 years. If he doesn’t win at least one playoff game this season, his season is a complete and total failure. I can’t wait till the season starts to see if he finally steps up and becomes a man.and a professional.

@@mcray0309 I only said that because Patrick Mahomes commented on Kyler and his situation. Patrick is one of the best young quarterbacks in the league if not the best. And quite unlike Kyler has been very successful. He implied it was because of race. He stated that Black quarterbacks like himself, Kyler and Lamar Jackson are judged on a different standard. So call out Patrick Mahomes not me. Also I am willing to bet that you stopped reading my comment when I said it was not because of race. The bottom line is that Kyler Murray is a diva. The Cardinals have bent over backwards to accommodate him. Even rewarding him with the second highest extension contract in the history of pro football. For a player that has only been in the NFL for three seasons and only played one season of college ball. And does not have a winning record as a professional quarterback. Choked in his only playoff appearance.

@@mr.nyceguy7800I’d say Bo Jackson is the biggest bust ever. He was drafted first overall by the bucks in 85 but never suited up, signed, or was traded for anything and instead got drafted by the raiders the following year. Downs played count and they are at least some value. But the bucs lost a chance to get any value from a position where they could get a great player or prospect.
I’m so happy that you mentioned Akili Smith. He is not mentioned nearly often enough when it comes to biggest busts imo. Not only did the Bengals draft him with a high pick, not only did they pass on much better players (including Ederrin James and Champ Bailey) but they also rejected an absurdly lopsided trade by New Orleans in order to take a guy who had worse numbers and had a shorter career than Tim Couch.

I’d like to throw Tony Mandarich’s name into the equation. He was taken 2nd overall in the 1989 draft as an OT because of his insane combine. Then he held out until the regular season and mostly just played special teams. Good for Mandarich for being able to end his career with some dignity but the fact still remain he had three future HOFs drafted behind him. You need to have a HOF career yourself to avoid the bust level in those circumstances
To JaMarcus' credit, he did have good numbers for LSU in 07, but as a Tiger fan, their success was mostly due to the running game and defense. I was shocked to hear the Raiders were considering him. And it was purely because he could throw like 80 yards from his knees. Of course, Raiders gonna Raider. Ryan Leaf is the biggest bust of all. He was legitimately considered over Peyton Manning. JaMarcus somehow just eventually found himself atop a shitty QB class. Being a #1 pick makes no difference.

Ja Marcus Russell is the only one of the three that I saw in person so I'm going with him. I saw him "play" at Giants Stadium in 2009. Ja Marcus was 8-13 for 100 yards and was sacked 6 times. It was one of the worst performances by a QB that I ever saw and as a Giants season ticket holder for 51 years I saw a lot of them.
You really need to reconsider Tony Mandarich for this list of top three all time busts. He one upped your chosen three because he cheated his way into being considered a number one draft choice possibility. Live by the needle, die by the needle. Mandarich's super powers were because of the massive unnatural body mass he had acquired by doing steroids. That the NFL ever let him back in the league amazes me to this day.
This channel is gonna blow up at some point. Good work dude.
Brian Bosworth was the worst bust. Because he had so much hype as this monster player. But then Bo Jackson kicked his ass. Brian Bosworth played three seasons in the NFL. 24 games. Ten the first year, 12 the second year and two in his final season. Blew out both shoulders. The reason why his shoulders were weakened was because of all the steroids he took when he was playing at Oklahoma. It was so bad at Oklahoma that his head coach Barry Switzer who was not noted for obeying all the rules. Had to suspend him.
Lets not forget about the vikings drafting laquan tredwell in the first round. And him never starting a single game for us.

Aaron Curry. The supposed "Safe Bet" LB prospect. The Seahawks took him 4th overall in 2009. He was considered a sure thing and a potential to go #1 in that draft. He proceeded to accomplish nothing but disappointment and three years later he was traded to the Raiders for a 7th rounder having lost his job to a rookie K.J. Wright. He left the Seahawks with 4 tackles a game and a combined 5.5 sacks in two years. He would again put up 4 tackles a game in his sole starting year with the Raiders and never recorded another sack. He would be waived after two games in his second year with Raiders, after which he would sign with the Giants in the 2013 offseason where he would fail to make the final 53 man roster ending his career in a retirement of shame. A supposedly elite, potentially #1 overally draft pick LB prospect got himself waived after only four years, waived two games into his fifth and couldn't even make a roster after that. He isn't the worst bust ever but he's definitely the biggest first round miss the Seahawks (My favorite team) ever had.
I would go with demarcia's Russell But most people are probably gonna say right and leave and I think that's only because he was more hyped than any of the other ones you mentioned

I feel like Akili Smith is the worst decision, just because of how much value the Bengals completely passed on. I'm not even that plugged in to football, but I'd at the very least think extremely hard about the trade even if the prospect was someone like Peyton Manning. If there were red flags like that low score on a test about the mental side of being a quarterback on the prospect I was likely to get with that pick? Nah, if that's the best pick I'll go ahead and set myself up with a ton of draft capital to either get down-board talent or trade capital for future drafts. Especially knowing that they were doing all that for a running back, even with the 90s being more run-heavy than the modern NFL. I just can't imagine passing up nine picks, half of them before round 3, even if I was giving up the 1st overall pick, much less 3rd overall.
Why would you put a tape in the DVD player?
It was Jamarcus Russell, he was the #1 draft pick, held out of camp his rookie season for a massive contract he never lived up to. He was out of the league in 3 seasons. The icing on the cake was his contract was the direct reason the NFL now has the Rookie Contract Structure. To prevent unproven players from strapping a team financially that haven't played one snap in an NFL game.

Both Akili Smith and JaMarcus Russell were waaaay overrated coming into the draft and shouldn't be considered busts(at least not all time) because any sane person knew to not buy into the hype. Leaf is definitely the worst of these three. Mandarich and Marinovich should have been featured in this video. Carter got injured and was never the same again... so he wasn't so much a bust as he suffered what was essentially a career ending injury(and it didn't help he kept getting injured in subsequent years).

Either Leaf or Russell win these worst bust contests. Honestly, you could pick either one.
I hear or see JaMarcus Russell I instantly think of a Mcdouble
Leaf, Brees, Rivers - I'm pretty sure Chargers scouts just go for a hike to think up draft ideas.
As a Cowboys fan the Eagles made the best choice of picking McNabb over a Akili smith because McNabb would lead the Eagles five NFC Championships in total and he was in super bowl 39 best draft pick in 1999 first round
To me, Ryan Leaf is the biggest bust of all-time. Yes, Russell was taken #1, but like you said: 2007 was a horrible draft class for QB’s. And yes, the Raiders could have had Megatron. But Russell was never in the argument of “Who’s better?” Not like Leaf, who had those saying he was better than Manning. But at least Leaf has acknowledged and taken responsibility not only for his train wreck of an NFL career, but his substance abuse issues. I know Russell has too and I want both men to continue being healthy.
