The Art of Being an NFL Draft Bust

The NFL Draft is as intriguing as it is year after year because of the uncertainty that hangs on each pick regardless of how sure they seem. When the margin for error is as small as it is in pro football, it doesn't take much to ruin all of the momentum you carried on your way into the league, but for a select few, the stories their short careers follow almost make it look like they were trying to be remembered as a bust all along.

    Ryan Leaf is just a mess of a human. It's also weird because he gives really funny, insightful and honest interviews, then proceeds to do something stupid to get arrested yet again. It's quite a human tragedy. Makes you appreciate the likes of Kurt Warner or Russell Wilson who were nobodies and became super bowl champs through their hard work.

    The stories of busts are always fascinating, particularly when you gain an understanding of why they were overhyped and why they failed, but I really love stories about the guys who were overlooked and rejected, fought their way onto a team and ended up in the HOF. Dick Lane. Deacon Jones. Marion Motley. Kurt Warner. Johnny Unitas. Bart Starr. Warren Moon. Tom Brady. The list goes on and on of great players who were overlooked or cast aside, but who eventually succeeded. You could do a whole series on them. I'd watch them over and over and over.

  • @Deeplycloseted435
    @Deeplycloseted4353 жыл бұрын

    A lot of times it seems like some guys are so physically gifted, they’ve never had to work at football very hard. Then they get to the NFL.....and the work ethic they never developed, is hard to come by. Its like a really smart kid, who never had to study, but then gets to grad school and has no idea how to prepare for a test, because they’ve never needed to. I feel bad for most draft busts, because really they are just kids and their failure is on the front page and will be talked about for years to come. I’m kind of shocked that teams investing their future in so much uncertainty, don’t have some kind of mentoring program. An assistant coach or retired player who gets payed a decent salary, just to make sure that the million dollar kid is keeping it together and getting tucked in at bed time. If anything, paying more attention to the psychological and emotional struggle that a young kid who is given tens of millions of dollars suddenly, would seem worth while. Its impossible for a 21 year old to realize that their NFL career will be over in the blink of an eye.

    That's why having a good front office and coaching staff is also very important for a young player's successes. A good example would be Brett Favre. Prior to being traded to the Packers and training/learning under Mike Holmgren (who already had an impressive resume coaching/mentaring Joe Montana and Steve Young for the Niners), he was on his way of becoming another NFL bust with the Falcons.

    I've wondered this same thing. I think some - not all but some - players would even be receptive to the idea. Josh Gordon was on like chance number six of trying to keep out of off-field trouble and seems a reasonable guy, he knew what he was and what he was liable to do. You can't tell me hiring a babysitter for another 90K a year wasn't worth a try.

    Everybody needs guidance in life as a 20-24 year old. I know I did, and I come from a good family. I know some teams have hired “chaperones” for players with off the field troubles, but I just think especially the young guys, would benefit from somebody reminding them that the goal isn’t to just get in the league, but to be able to sign two near-max contracts later in your career. That and each team should have a player’s financial planner to help them set themselves up for life. So many talented players have been lost due to immaturity.

    @America Johnny Football was a notorious party animal before the NFL and Cleveland "The Factory of Sadness" Browns were stupid for drafting him 26th overall. Especially when they paid over 100k for a draft analysis of the best QB n they said it was Teddy Bridgewater ( who was still on the board at the time ) . Still, Johnny Football a low 1st round pick n the Browns 2nd pick in the 1st round. To draft Ryan Leaf, the then San Diego Chargers had to mortgage A LOT of their future draft picks to trade up to 2nd just get. And success??? This guy won a whopping 4 games over the course of his career, lead the League in turnovers, and was gone in 3 years ( really shouldn't have lasted that long ) . The biggest difference between the Johnny Football and Ryan Leaf was that, before the draft, EVERYONE thought Ryan Leaf was a future All-Pro ( literally every scout ). Anyone who really scouted "The Legend of Johnny Football" knew his reputation nonstop partying, sloppy hero-ball style of play, and the large possibility he wouldn't make it without having Mike Evans to throw to.

    I’ll admit it... as a colts fan in the mid to late 90s I really wanted them to draft Leaf. You have to understand that he really was an amazing college player. He had a good game against Michigan and I really liked his chances in the NFL... Nobody could’ve predicted the meltdown that would then ensue. Happy the Colts landed Manning, and I’m happy Leaf has his life back together now. In the end things unfold as the universe intended.

    To fair to the Mahomes/Watson folks, I personally think that the Bears are sooooo inherently incapable of drafting and developing QB's that Mahomes and/or Watson would have failed in Chicago as well. So I think that Mahomes, instead of showing the Bears he knows how to count with his fingers whenever he faces off against them, should be eternally grateful that the Bears didn't draft him and make him another in a loooong line of Chicago QB Draft Busts.

    The draft bust hierarchy: Tier 0 (God-tier bust): Ryan Leaf Tier 1 (Talented, could've been HOFers if they commited themselves to the game): Jamarcus Russell, Johnny Manziel Tier 2 (Failed because of two of 3 factors: injuries, poor play, and off the field issues): Lawrence Phillips, Art Schlichter Tier 3 (Never deserved the hype): Brian Bosworth, Tony Mandarich Tier 4 (Failed because of the injury bug): Ki-Jana Carter, Steve Emtman Tier 5 (Simply isn't NFL material): Blair Thomas, Matt Leinart Tier 6 (Failed because they were immediately thrusted into the spotlight): Akili Smith, Heath Shuler Tier 7 (Average to above-average players who are always being compared to HOFers/future HOFers): Ken O'Brien, Jadeveon Clowney Tier 8 (Players who were drafted into the wrong system/wrong team): David Carr, Tim Couch Tier 9 (Players who didn't live up to the hype but still have long productive careers): Jim Plunkett, George Rogers

    As a teacher, the key thing I try to drill into kids heads is that hard work will always exceed pure talent. You look at Manziel who was gifted never worked to better himself. Fast forward to the present and you have Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, and Pat Mahomes who have all held positions as starters and could most likely be franchise qbs. They have all had bad games, but the difference is they try to be better than they were the day before.
