I've moved houses three times, renovated, redecorated... and I STILL find these tiny little silver confetti glitter heart things in my house from a "gift box" a girlfriend made me 20 years ago. I wish I was joking, but I swear she set the thing to go off like a bouncing Bettie or something when I unwrapped it in my bedroom, the things got into my books, DVD cases, comic sleeves and longboxes, guitar cases, everywhere.

2:27 No, she made perfect sense. She means you can see it, but you probably won't realize it's glitter. In metallic automotive paint there are tiny flakes that reflect light at certain angles giving it the "metallic" look. It's usually expensive paint, so if people found out it was just really fine glitter in the paint it would lose value.

The boat thing really made me think. I started messing around with making soft plastic lures for fishing this year and every single one has glitter in it . The fish eat it all the time , and you lose 4 or 5 in the water every time you go out. And I’ve never thought of how much glitter that actually puts in the water.

Well that’s kinda why I assumed the Glitterex lady wouldn’t say who the buyer was. The boat and/or automotive manufacturers that use glitter in their paints don’t want people to know that it’s glitter. Not because of micro-plastics being ecologically damaging, companies could obviously give a fuck less about that. No, it’s just because glitter is seen as “gay” and all these MANLY boat and car buyers wouldn’t get these fancy looking vehicles if they knew they were covered in glitter.

As a big fisherman, I’ve known this for a long time lol. It’s actually a pretty often conversation between my friends and I who fish often. If you ever see a fiberglass bass boat, there’s a CRAZY amount of glitter on those boats. Every square inch is covered in it lol. This literal sentence cane out of my mouth last weekend while fishing on the bayou with my friends. I said to them, “do y’all think tracker buys the most glitter in the world to cover their boats with?” And it got us thinking. We came to the conclusion that there isn’t much glitter being bought other than for parties (which we cane up with a number of 5%) and we said paint was the other 95%. Out of cars with glitter, there’s not that many, but boats on the other hand? Lmao. You don’t see fiberglass bass boats that AREN’T covered in glitter nowadays.

These flakes used to be aluminum, but since aluminum powder is explosive, they switched to polyester flakes. I figure their largest buyer is boat builders because a different company is making all the "glitter" for automotive use. I'm positive the glitter is being used in paints.

I mean the while boat is ^^'. It's a gel coat paint... So WE use it on composit boat. And boy, it this thing the less ecological and the most common toxical most that exist. Like every time de build on of those boats we need a hight grade filtering mask (at the bare minimum a painting mask) so yeah... It isn't really good. Also it isn't reusable, it's thermosetting which means when it's broken... Well you can't really do anything with it, you can melt it and buid a new boat (there are some thermoplastic boats... But they're heavier since it a less solid material you need more of it to get the dame strenght. So no one use theim :/). So yeah... Not so great... Metal boats are better... I think... Actually antifouling might be worse. So yeah... Not good... Sorry environnement we'll try to improve out way of making baots. Sincerly, a ship building student.

If it's seen as something expensive maybe they just don't want people thinking too much about it. Because "wait did I seriously pay more for cheap coloured flakes of plastic, wow my expensive boat kinda feels tacky now."

The slang for that kind of paint is metal flake. They want people thinking its metal not plastic. If you've ever mixed it before though, yeah its obvious that its just glitter.

One of the largest buyers of glitter is the military. It is used by tanks and armoured vehicle. it is used to refract laser beam from targeting systems. So there is no coherent laser strike or dot on the targeted vehicle. When in the killing fields the tank commander can use compressed air to blow a rainbow like cloud of glitter all around the tank. This anti missile system is both effective and very pretty. How often can you say that about war.
