Interesting note on pronunciation given the sponsor. I'm called Leslie & hate it with a passion. So I shortened it to Les. Pronounced Lez. Except for Americans it seems. They always pronounce it as Less. With an s at the end instead of the z that comes from how you say Leslie. In this video there's a Derek. The common abbreviation for that name is Des, pronounced Dez. You now understand why my ears pricked up when you called him Dess! It's a strange hangup to have, I know! But, with the large US presence online, getting called Less all the time starts to grate. As it would for poor old Des, if he were here, being called Dess!

My theory : the man fishing fell overboard. Another man removed his shirt and glasses jumped in to rescue him, while the third man started engine, and circled back. Then, it's easy to misjudge someone's sodden weight trying to pull them aboard with engine at idle: 1-2kts. Then currents and idle speed made it impossible for the 3 to swim back. I've seen lots of ppl fall overboard trying to haul someone out of water at slow speed. The lesson is: never leave the wheelhouse with engine in gear, and drop anchor and sea anchor if possible. Also, tie yourself to the boat with only enough rope to do what u need to do(especially if you are the last man aboard in an emergency)

Have a ladder on your boat too. Not just some step ladder leaned up against the starboard side... an actual boat ladder (I'm not sure what they're actually called, if even they're called something different than just "boat ladder") that normally is hinged up and inside the boat, with the ability to be unchained and hinged over the side and have like, 5 feet of ladder in the water leading up into the boat. But yes, as you said, stop the boat, drop anchor, and don't have the engine running and prop moving, regardless however slow you think you're going. And I agree again, tie off with just enough slack that you can assist but not fall over. Man. What a scary event that must've been, cause I actually believe you're theory more so than any other.

I agree. It seems to me that whoever took off their shirt and glasses probably did so to jump in after someone. People overestimate their ability to save someone in the water all the time causing multiple drownings at once. I think each person that jumped in thought they could quickly get the others back in and it just didn't turn out that way.

Interesting video! I'm an Aussie sailor so I've always wondered a bit, though I tend to think it's either the overboard or the sandbar theories. Jumping in after them is the one thing you get told not to do by any competent captain. One of the first things I learnt when learning to sail was to thrown anyone overboard a ring and bring the boat around into the wind. That way you can get close to them at a slow speed without bothering with sails or anything. Of course, people can forget training or make impulsive decisions in a crisis, but if Mr Batten had his skipper's licence as I've read, I'd find it strange that he wouldn't know what to do if his crew fell overboard. Glad you mentioned that fenders aren't exactly conclusive proof of anything - seen non-sailors say it's proof of foul play but I've left mine down plenty of times out of forgetfulness.

You're right. You brief this before you set out, and practice with a ring (without a man overboard), to show how it's done. One man casts the ring and points at the MOB with a boathook and counts, the other controls the boat. The MOB is retrieved using a spare winch. And you always wear your Floaties when you're offshore.

So the presence of glasses and shirt of one of the crew to me seems like a major clue. Perhaps one went overboard, whether intentionally or not, and the others went in to save them but the boat sailed away faster than they could swim back to it and they drowned. Tragic.

  • @alaric_

As a person who wears glasses, taking them off before going to water is my first reaction. Losing them is a major personal drag and they are practically useless anyway when water splashes on them all the time. It really seems like the person with glasses was last to leave the boat as he had most time to react. How the chain of events started is in my opinion the one suggested in the video, fishing line caught in the rudder and the ensuing panic.

I remember working for the local police shortly after pearlescent paint became popular on cars. In the middle of the day, in bright sunlight, almost a dozen people saw a light green car jump up onto the pavement and clip a table and chair, hurting an elderly woman and her daughter. Five other witnesses on the other side of the street saw a pink car. Two woman said it was blue. One boy with only one eye said it was white. He was the only one who got it right. Depending on being in shadow looking out or in sunlight looking in and looking at lit or unlit portions of the car in the heat of the moment resolved to make people see everything differently. The car was 'apple white' with a pearlescent coat that meant the gleam reflected green or pink depending on the light and your position to it.

Having worked in a public office for some time during college, I have learned that most "we didn't double check because it wasn't worthy" statements in this kind of inquiries most of the time is made to cover stingy superiors who just won't release the funds for further investigation and keep your job. The guys had a rescue chopper with no working radio to communicate with boats, so I imagine the budget in the coast guard wasn't really abundant. And they probably wanted to close the investigation quickly as soon as a plausible answer was found. Sadly for the family of the victim most of the time is not lack of interest but lack of money that stiffles investigations, that's something CSI doesn't show you

Btw: The most likely explanation for the mary Celeste is: Some things are known about the celeste. Like the freight she hauled when she got lost. The ship was carrying a bulk load of pure alcohol. Some of the barrels started leaking and the crew noticed the smell correctly deducing that the concentration levels under deck might reach an explosive concentration. Combined with the ship having carried coal prior to that they feared that if the alcohol starts burning the rameining coal dust might ignite too. So without a hurry they boarded the Celeste's dinghy and attached it to the Celeste using a long rope. The plan being to wait for a day or so for the alcohol fumes to dissipate. At some point the rope must have gotten lose and the crew of the Celeste was lost at sea without a chance to catch up to their ship.

The rope which was tied to the MC was found cut off, not untied, but clearly cut off with a sharp object. Therefore some theories suggest they cut off the rope when they were caught in strong winds and the small boat they were on was dragged in a way by the MC that they were or they thought they were going to be dragged under. Maybe they partially were and they cut the rope just a bit too late. Also there were reports from the coast of Spain of a small boat with decomposed bodies beyond recognition which had landed on the shore somewhere. As identification was impossible they buried the bodies somewhere near the coast.

To me, it seems clear that at least one man went overboard intentionally, as he removed his glasses and shirt. Honestly it seems to me that the fishing theory is correct, but that the captain may have dove in intentionally, after idling the engine, not realizing how fast currents and sails can take the boat away from a swimmer.

To me it is reeeaally questionable that the guy with the hurt foot would rather jump in than throwing the buoy, let alone he´s the one in the water. The MC was likely due to the cargo exploding. She was carrying raw alcohol, the barrels of which used to go bang with some regularity although they weren't dangerous explosions. But iirc, the Captain was a teetotaller who had no experience of this and they likely thought the ship was in danger so took to the lifeboats expecting the entire ship to blow up or catch fire. Either they didn't tie the smaller boat through fear of fire or just forgetting and then they'd not be able to catch her up again. No idea why or how I can even remember this (I have a head full of pointless rubbish but can never remember where the bloody door-keys are) but I think that's the widely accepted explanation.

In 2020 I went out to sea on various trips in Mexico and Croatia, one was for scuba diving and one was just island hoping, each time we were offered chances to swim in the water whilst the boat was nearby. Obviously you take that opportunity if you’re a decent enough swimmer, and let me tell you, it’s much harder to swim in the sea without a life jacket and the closest thing to hold onto if you need a breather is 40 meters away. I could feel myself being confused at my desired distance becoming wider as I panicked to get to it, since my body mass is that of someone that would sink if I’m not swimming with quite a lot of physical exertion, whereas my girlfriend could quite easily float. It’s fucking scary, especially when it’s basically the first thing you’re doing in the morning, the only reason I didn’t panic to the point of possibly drowning was just relying on my cardio, otherwise something very simple could have ended very fucking badly for me. Premise of this being, that I just think they all drowned trying to save each other and realised it wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be.

If the foresail was as high quality as the rest of the boat, there is no reasonable explanation so far for its tearing. 3. Unless its your first time out, I don't know anyone who sails that long and that far and just accidentally forgets to put their fenders up. The IS a perfectly sane explanation for the Mary Celeste. The crew abandoned the ship because alcohol vapor was leaking and there was a high risk of explosion, they went to a lifeboat attached to the ship with a rope, at some point the rope snapped and they were lost to the sea. This is an explanation that is perfectly sane and does not involve anything paranormal or aliens. This should be public knowledge by now instead of pushing this thing that we can't possibly explain what happened in any sense.

True. I know a case where something similar happened; family went on a boating trip, three men and their kids on a boat on a reservoir, wives on the shore. No one on the boat could swim, no vests worn. One guy fell overboard, the other two went in after him, all three drowned in less than 20 feet of water, leaving all the kids on the boat.

Yeah that's what im thinking too. None of them were wearing life vests in the video, and they also mentioned in the report that one of the guys shirt and glasses were left on a seat in the back. Its likely he took them off in a hurry before jumping in the water to help whoever fell overboard.

Well they're definitely in the ocean somewhere, but how? I think the sandbar theory makes the most sense. They might've gotten stranded after pushing the boat too far away and perhaps got swept into sea by a big wave sometime afterward. That seems the most reasonable to me.

Im not a conspiracy theorist who immediately jumps to "the government did this and it's a coverup", however the dismissiveness and eagerness to let this case die tells me that there was incompetence or malpractice in the search efforts that the coroner and the rescue agencies would rather just say "freak accident, whoops" than admit wrong. This is just too fishy, no pun intended

I've done a bit of sailing in the past, and I know the Whitsundays pretty well, but the boat turning 90 degrees is explainable with them being under sail and needing to tack to keep heading north. But the theory of one falling over board, another jumping in to help them float is strange, not something taught in any sailing courses. Although a one man man-over-board could lead to a lot of mistakes and even falling off the boat. Anotger great vid though, keep it up!

If I ever go sailing, I'm definitely rigging a rope between myself and the boat. Many have those metal railings that encircle the entire boat, so simply sliding a carabiner along those should work. I've worked up on utility poles before, and you always, _always_ tie yourself off.

The fenders left out in my dad’s opinion are proof of poor seamanship. The fact that these three blokes were out with sails up and engine running, but especially that they didn’t keep either radio or phone contact with the mainland makes me think that they were not terribly experienced, and the sea is not kind to people who bite off more than they can chew.

I'm inclined to believe that one of the men fell in after an accident/complications with the fishing lines, and the others simply drowned trying to save him. People freak out and thrash around, and they will definitely pull you down and drown you in their panic. Lots of people neglect to take that into consideration. Obviously, they could have used the life ring, but sometimes when people are panicked they don't think straight and end up putting themselves or other in more danger.
