Who is Stephen King's Boogeyman? ( What's in the Doctor's Notebook? )

#stephenking #horrorstories #theboogeyman2023
Tonight's video is a basically a repost / revision so we could fix the ending (the first try was a bit too ambiguous...)
This creative summary isn't your run-of-the-mill STEPHEN KING AUDIOBOOK... Instead, We're doing a bit of fan-casting using dialogue from Stephen King's short story and remixing it with images of Bradley Cooper and one of our favorite actors from yesteryear: Peter Cushing.
We also had a lot of fun trying to imagine what the psychiatrist is writing in his notebook as he listens to the main character. All the images were generated with text prompts and Midjourney AI.

The Boogeyman was a pretty horrifying read, not so much for the titular creature (which, really, we know very little about) but for the *protagonist,* who's nearly as much of a monster as the Boogeyman himself. The dude left *his own son* as bait to lure the monster out. And it's quite apparent, at the end, that the disguised monster (a.k.a. Dr. Harper) was *enjoying every minute* of listening to this dude's horrors. He could have revealed himself at any time, but he wanted to toy with his prey as much as he could before the Reveal. His last words before the pounce managed to make him a bigger horror than the protagonist. And that's saying something. One monster preying on another... *"So nice. So niiiiiice...."*

Story really messed me up to the point where I had to sleep with my closet were absolutely shut for years as a child nothing else phase me, Freddy Jason and Michael Myers nada but this novel and there was a cheap short film made in the 80s about it and it was terrifying for the budget but made me just not be able to sleep with the closet door open for a long time

This is my favorite Stephen King story. I still remember the chills I got reading it in bed 20 yrs ago. Now I realize it’s an allegory for abusive parenting. Back then, it gave me a healthy fear of ajar doors.

Yes. I hadn’t read this in a long time and revisiting here, I wondered if it could be an allegory for the hatred, abuse and murder of children. Could the father have killed his children and he is confronting his own demons about it?

This is not a bad theory. However the supernatural is a real phenomenon in the Stephen King universe. Things like monster that was in the Storm of the Century, It in Derry, The Man in Black in the Gunslinger series who we later find out is Randall Flagg. He also appeared in The Stand. So I can believe that it was the Boogeyman. However, this man was a domineering, misogynist, bully who is so prideful he let his children die without trying to save them at all. That’s why he is as much a monster as the Boogeyman. I honestly don’t believe he loved any of his children. Although he claims affection for the last child who looked like him.

@@jharris3267 That is true, but having all people like that in King's stories (and several others) gets a bit boring in time. It's like bullies and jerks in horror movies, they're there so we feel glad when the slasher gets them. The advantage of this story is that it is older, so it has reasonably original for its time. But he just kept repeating the character, like he does with most of his characters, who are all King tropes by now.

Good Peter Cushing voice...I read Night Shift at 12 or 13 and The Boogeyman scared the hell out of me, especially the ending. I was sad they didn't include the Dr Harper reveal in the movie, and while I understand that movies and books are separate storytelling vehicles , I wish they hadn't relegated the original story to the prologue. Frankly I wish Dr Harper WAS the Boogeyman in the movie version: Think of all the underlying themes of familial trauma they could have explored....

That's a great idea! This is basically the same video -- but I tinkered with the ending. Still not completely satisfied. In King's story, he describes the doctor's face as a mask that has been removed... and I'm not talented enough to animate Peter Cushing taking off a mask to reveal the Boogeyman (and so far, I can't prompt the A.I. in the exact direction I want it...) But, all in all, I think this version is a little better. :)
