This video is part of a series about climate change supported by Breakthrough Energy - a coalition founded by Bill Gates, that is working to expand clean-energy investment and support the innovations that will lead the world to net-zero carbon emissions.
www.gatesnotes.com/Climate-an...
Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have released over 1.5 trillion tonnes of carbon dioxide or CO2 into the earth's atmosphere. In the year 2019 we were still pumping out around 37 billion more. That’s 50% more than the year 2000 and almost three times as much as 50 years ago. And it’s not just CO2. We’re also pumping out growing volumes of other greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. Combining all of our greenhouse gases, we’re emitting 51 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents each year.
And emissions keep rising - but they need to get down to 0!

«I love that this video is not biased. Most other channels blame developing countries like China [...]» They still missed something big: **accounting for imports/exports** of greenhouse gas emissions per capita. A.K.A. carbon footprint. So for example the figures attribute the emissions for making EU & US electronics and goods mostly to Asian people.[1] Rich countries are outsourcing emissions to other countries and the video misses that.[2] It changes + or - a few tons of CO2 for many countries and part of the ranking changes. Source: Wikipedia "List of countries by carbon dioxide emissions per capita" and compare section "Production-based emissions" for 2015 with "'Consumption-based emissions" for 2016. China goes from 7.7t/person to 6.27t, rich countries gain 1 or a few tons depending on if they have a manufacturing or fossil industry that exports. A dramatic example is Belgium going from 9.2t to 15.61t. Likely due to not having much industry. Check out the above source for more. Caveat: that's still not complete, it's not actually the carbon footprint, it's CO2 only and not all greenhouse gases (so it misses a lot of agriculture impact and all leaks from gas industry) so all the figures should be a bit higher and countries ranking should again change due to difference in food diets (% of animal products) and again upping the rich countries. Anyone knows where to find such data? To solve that last big bias. And is anything else big missing? [1] a laptop is like 0.5 ton! [2] almost a third of the carbon footprint of someone in France are goods. And more than half is imported. source: course 8 (Carbon accounting) at École des Mines 2019 by JM Jancovici

The United States is always blamed for being one of the worst in terms of pollution, despite being one of the biggest advocates of clean energy. The entire reason we pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord is because we aren't going to be the only ones to sacrifice our economy so everybody else can feel good about themselves. The EU and friends didn't give a damn about the agreement. Yes, before anyone had a clue about climate change, the US polluted more than anyone else. Such a shame they weren't psychic. Now stop bringing up the past. No, we can't begin today. The idea that we can just stop using fossil fuels is ridiculous. Considering everyone's heavy reliance on them in daily life, the cost to replace *every single thing* that uses fossil fuels, the jobs that would be lost, and the horrible effects on the economy would be more than enough to bring America to its knees. The Green New Deal is garbage, climate activists have unrealistic expectations, other countries are hypocrites, and we aren't stupid enough to destroy our way of life. It's not happening, so quit crying about it.

People love to blame the leaders of their countries for not doing more, but I would imagine that any leader who actually did as much as they should to combat climate change, would be voted out in favor of somebody who did less. The issue is that people are selfish, and the change needed to combat climate change also lowers quality of life. So the average voter is not going to vote for a person who promises to deliver on climate goals, because it will mean higher costs of living and in general a lower quality of life. The fact that people also like to blame leaders is another thing which makes it easy to shift responsibility away from oneself. In any democracy, it is the voters who decide the leaders, so in the end, they bear the responsibility of who makes the decisions.

As a civilization we are ultimately all responsible for "Climate Change" as for who should be fixing it the short answer is all of us. So here is the legacy problem that we face, while we have the U.N. who simply are no longer fit for purpose, the issue will just be a case of "kicking the can further down the road" Which is perhaps sadly what we have been doing for decades. So what happens now. Well those in authority and positions of power will simply continue to duck their responsibility and what we end up with is a final showdown between Mother Nature and her inexhaustible power to teach us, yes us the whole of mankind a lesson well deserved. In the past decade we have seen one natural disaster after another and every affected Country has had to pick up the bill for the cost of those disasters. As we refuse not to learn from these past lessons, what becomes blatantly clear is that the rising costs will continue, and eventually we run out of money to fix this. The result is very simple, 1. Loss of life, across the globe. 2. Further mass migration. 3. Atrocities which sadly go hand in hand when we find ourselves in this predicament. 4. Economies crash and burning or worse on slow burn till, they financial meltdown becomes global. 5. N.W.O. finally comes to the rescue, but is it the rescue that any of us think it is. 6. We are neck deep in fire-fighting all natural disasters and resources finally reach breaking point. 7. Poly-Pandemics take centre stage, as we once again find ourselves fighting on a front we never planned for. 8. Our new enemy becomes the Sun, and it's not quite what we envisaged. i) Skin cancer is soon to take the number one spot. ii) Famine returns to our radar as food production is impacted by global warming. iii) C.M.E.'s, Solar Storms, create for us a whole new set of health problems. Which sadly again no one saw coming which is the Electro Magnetic Field, begins to affect the minds of humans because we are extremely sensitive to this new exposure, which we will see, happen first in the Southern Hemisphere before the Northern Hemisphere is affected. There is a scientific argument that if there was a Polar Shift then you guessed it the tables would be turned and we would then be exposed to this being a combination of Radiation from the Sun, and the subtle E.M.F waves that will penetrate through the expose ozone layer and bring a whole new threat. 9. Oceans and Seas temperature rise increased due to tectonic plates, moving and underwater volcanoes adding heat from beneath the seas and oceans. 10. Permafrost co4 fuels global warming, and releases us to new threats that we didn't allow for. The list is endless, I am giving you just a few, to ponder over.

And if we do do it, we’re just angery and then we all just blame each other then the cycle repeats.

Americans must be insanely wasteful if they manage to emit 3 times as much as us and we already drive everywhere and don't put _that_ much thought into it. I remember reading in the comments of another video that it's common for people who have second homes in places like Florida to leave the AC/heat on even when they're not there, because otherwise their poorly built houses literally rot from the moisture building up. That is INSANE to me, and probably to every other person on this planet who isn't American.

@@demoniack81 Its absurd and negligent to a good portion of Americans as well... Its sorta the majority, but when you dive into specific policies, most end up split by party. And while the USA is more of a Democracy than China, its a pretty poor one, so it doesn't respond to it's citizens views very well. When you see the "Political Polarization" hyped news articles about the USA, Climate Change action is a dominant reason for that polarization. In other words, somewhere around half of the USA is fed up with the other half for not acting, and are breaking apart their relationships in response. Some are literally splitting up their families over issues like this. So at least some are taking action.

The past century was marked by those western countries polluting the world first which make the total contribution of their pollutions higher than china. China emits the most pollution as they are starting to become richer and have way more people than all western countries combined. So, you are a hypocrite for attacking china as even today most of the pollution in china is caused by the outsourced pollutions of your western countries corporations to make their products cheap which is mostly sold to western consumers.

Just saying but planting trees will basically do nothing for the climate. Individually and even in groups people can't tackle this, no, countries themselves have to take action against climate change. If they could ban CFCs then they have the power to stop climate change, just not the willingness. That being said planting trees is extremely great for forests and wildlife, I suggest you all to change from Google to Ecosia for your search engine, it plants a tree for every 45 searches so you can plant a lot of trees without leaving your home.

And the rules are not fair or correct in many cases. It's an externalisation of responsibility. What needs to change is law. That way, established companies will have to change their practices - which is much faster, easier and more reliable than building new companies from the ground up, only to compete in an unfair environment. But changes in law are slow at best because politics is too influenced by those who benefit short-sightedly from the current situation, and too predicated on personal belief.

Lots and lots of projects done for the glorification of the government with no substance or sustainability behind them. And as for doing something about it, it seems pretty easy to think of ways this could work both environmentally and economically. The developed countries could put money into researching and developing clean energy technologies that are then sold at the "early adopter" price among themselves, driving down the costs for developing countries to do the same. This both accomplishes the goal of reducing emissions at the countries that emit the most as well as getting developing countries - which aren't currently emitting a ton but would soon if no other technology were available - to adopt the technology as soon as possible.

But China has been planting forests in large quantities since two decades ago. In the past ten years, the scale and number of thermal power plants have been gradually shut down and reduced. There are too many people in this country, and everyone wants to live a better life, but they are still doing their best to protect the environment. However, Western countries have endlessly promoted and suppressed through the media for political purposes. It seems that everything China does is wrong, but in the end they question why the Chinese government does not give people a better life. It's nice to see bloggers describing the status quo objectively and without political perspective, I believe my country is still trying to do its part and I'm living this philosophy as an ordinary citizen

every one is to blame for climate change and no one is one cause for it its just that every one needs to stfu and go green all of the people in power are old farts that think it does not exsist like trump ect we need people who are younger and people who can see the damage we are doing to the environment we need to stop useing fossile fules also they will not least forever because there is a fineite amout of fosile fules that means it will run out eventualy and we would have to end up useing green power but it would be too late. Some ways of green energy are nucllear energy - no carbon emitions but very hard to get rid of wast wind energy - cheap and easy to use but very dependent on wind solar energy - very good in sunnyweather but expeenccive and less power when cloudy water power - dams and other methods but very expencive another way of reducing emitions is to encourage biking and have more no car zones because it has worked fantasticly is some areas in the world there are so many ways of perventing climate change but all of the idiots in power are not lissoning and doing nothing. during lockdown the world has had time to heal and repar its self and we can see this in countries like china who had smog before lockdown and no birds chirping to haveing no smog and haveing the birds cherp. because if we dont stop our ways now our planit will die and we will along with it and it will just be another barron planit in the endless void of space. also for all of what we know we are the only civilisation in the universe and if we dont treat our planit well we will fall and the universe will truly be empty idc if you hate this but things need to change and sorry for my spellin

@Pagani Zonda China is doing more by tree planting and limiting the emitting while USA quit the agreement. Your comment that it pollutes more than all other nations is subjective. Your comment itself is subjective and I literally didn't see any stats you provide here that support your objectiveness which make you sounded neutral while assuming it. They are putting effort in throughout the years responding to the summit and it's own people. The argument of this video is that benefits comes with responsibility, and the inequality created by industrialization is arguably not the reason to one line cut the global emissions. China is doing a lot in my observation. Definitely not enough but indeed more than a lot other nations. China limits lifestyle emissions, enforce trash separation and recycling. Stopped importing electrical and other trash, planting impressive amount of trees, putting serious amount of restrictions to pollutive manufacture, and in major cities, no more open air BBQ, no more 2.0 and more engines for family uses. China also have environmental enforcement in every cities, and have actual law to prevent individual or enterprises to over emit and dump. In China, cutting trees without permission is a crime. Chinese people also stopped burning for warmth in major cities and this trend is tremendously expanded over the past decade as cities opt to natural gas warming supplied from powerplants instead of burning coal by community or individual families. Over the past fifty years, it built one after another nuclear powerplants and remodeled or replaced tons of thermal powerplants. China has largest inland power project in the world which it started while it is really poor because it realized burning coal is not the solution and is not sufficient for industrial needs. Near Beijing, China is building xiong an, a model city that eliminate cars and makes people sufficient in community and rely more on public transportation. If it successes the Chinese cities are going after this model, which increases human interaction and reduces commute in the same time. Quit your double standard and look for facts. If we eat less beef and stop luxurious fireplace and high emission cars, we can contribute. China needs to do more, but the established world also need to move in. Doing this and contribute together, so we can survive.

The odd part is that the countries making that arguments (China, India, etc) are also countries where energy-efficient industries are flourishing. China produces most of the world's solar cells and hydroturbines and has the world's largest tree-planting project, and India comes up with the most ingenious inventions for doing more with less energy.

@@day2148 Producing solar cells is in now way shape or form an energy efficient industry. If the same solar cells were built in a western nation they would adhere to much stricter environmental policies and cause less environmental damage per W produced. The reason we all shipped our industry to China is because it is cheaper, due to them having far less standards and more people with no say. Globalism makes us think its a good idea to triple handle every material, dig it up at home, send it to china to be refined then shipped back home as sub standard goods that last half as long as they should, meaning you have to buy it again sooner.

Depends on what part of Canada and what time of year. There are many areas in Canada where the water in dams doesn't freeze. Also Nuclear power plants wouldn't have an issue with the cold. As of right now Canada is almost completely bought up by large oil companies, which is the primary reason there hasn't been any change.
