Funny enough, it was Beenox who remade CTR, and they included both fake crash and Penta. Penta still being unlockable by button code (awsome)

Penta is a character from Parodius, Naughty Dog staff loved this game. He is a parody of the character Pentarou, that's all ! XD

Well, Penta saw the light of day again with the CTR remake.

I believe that was only due to the game being in an unfinished state (aka beta). It was fixed in some versions for sure.

Also for some reason his stats are different in NTSC-U compared to PAL and NTSC-J. In NTSC-U he has the same stats as Pura and Polar, but in the other versions he has the same stats as Oxide (all maxed out).

Penta is most likely male, according to his CTR: NF voice. By the way, the line played when unlocking him makes him say "Yay, Penguin yay 1!", a reference to the test line from the NTSC line of the original CTR. Even though I played the PAL version where he was essentially completed and those lines were removed, it's still a really cool reference!

"The trophy name doesn't imply anything concrete" Doesn't it, though? The implication is definitely there, even if it's wrong. Or perhaps, just as Beenox made 'Penguin yay one' a canon quote, maybe the devs retconned that penguin to be Penta in NST: Warped.

here's a much more serious suggestion: the freaking origins of coco, because there is a LOT of room for speculation and debate there and it's obviously much more important to the series. I think it makes the most sense that she was caught with crash and Tawna, was evolved, and escaped all before the events of crash 1 and then found her brother again later (or was possibly evolved by brio after crash 1, but its incredibly unlikely that he would just happen to find the sister of crash out of all the random bandicoots in the world) it would make sense because if Coco was the first bandicoot to be evolved and she turned out to be so smart, that would explain why cortex had such high hopes for crash to lead his army. additionally the "past failures" Brio mentions could refer to her since every other animal they evolved seems to be properly doing their bidding (except for ripper roo maybe) she clearly must have not been present during the events of crash 1 because A, cortex refers to Tawna as "THE female bandicoot" implying she is the only one they have, and B, why the fuck would Crash just leave her behind when rescuing Tawna?

I'd like to add that the Crash Bash penguin *is* called Penta, it says so in the level instructions. It's also worth noting that, as you showed in the unseen CTR Penta's ending, and remembering his winner/loser poses in the CTR podium, his model is the exact same as the one used in Crash 2 and 3, and he doesn't have his scarf either. I'm not siding with the Crash 2 clone theories, those are all different penguins imo. But I do believe the one in Crash 3 is him. Of course this is just my opinion combined with some facts that weren't shown in the video, but still, great job! It's good to see some love for these unknown fellas. Cheers.

Personally i think the Penguin we see in Dingodile boss could be Pentas ancestor because the battle takes place in Ice age and i dont think Penta is using Timetwister.

In Nitro-Fueled, Penta gets to keep his Aku/Uka-mask Glitch - and not only that, is seen rubbing his hands sinisterly after finishing a race - though looking now and then back as to ensure none sees his "true self". Could this call back to his "self-serving greedy merchant"-character he's seen in "Dansu! De Jump! Na Daibouken."? He also sold jetpacks to Cortex and Crash before they can fly to space. He feels kinda like Wario-esque character, along with bit of "canon immigrant" on him this way. Kinda sad Beenox didn't seem too aware of the manga though, since they could have referenced his girlfriend and all.

I still think Penta is the same penguin whos jumping on Dingodile after Crash defeating him. Penta and Dingodile are fastest characters in orginal CTR. This must mean something. "penguin yay one!"

You probably have. "Penguin Yay 1" and "Penguin Yay 2" were placeholder sound effects for Penta Penguin, but they forgot to replace their files with proper sounds, so they are still in the game. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iImgj9JxirHTl5M.html

Penta Penguin was a very random character to add in CTR. I get he was kind of a character in Cortex Strikes Back, Warped and Bash as well as in the manga, but they should have at least shown his character to the people who haven't read it. After people unlocked him, it would be a littler weird why he was there since there was no backstory about him.

These videos are really interesting! Your voice is actually quite nice to listen to, too! I can't figure out where your accent is from, but I love it! ^_^

I think he was put in CTR based on his appearance in the manga because of his "anime eyes" in that game and was then retconned into Crash 3 by Vicarious Visions, but his character might have been based on the penguin from Crash 3. All the other penguins are not Penta obviously

You did great job mate. Good investigation :-) I hope Penta Penguin will come at least in DLC of new CTR.

Actually it's confirmed the one in Crash 3 during Dingodile's fight IS Penta in the remake, where beating Dingodile gives you the Acheivment "Penta Penguin's Revenge"

Hah, same. BTW, by Nitro Kart 2 I meant Nitro Kart 2 on Java Mobile Handsets, like, Pre-iPhone versions. So if you ever need footage of the original Nitro Kart 2 (or any other trashy Crash mobile game... and believe me there's a lot) then a Java emulator would be your best bet.

Penta is actually the penguin from Crash 3. I know because not only is his name in the trophy for beating Dingodile in N. Sane Trilogy, but because if you play a cup in Crash Team Racing as Penta Penguin and you win. During the end when you're on the podium. You can actually see Penta Penguin without his scarf.

Dingodile took some of Penta Penguins friends, which is the reason behind the trophy. You need to do a bit more on ur research, I've known this since the comics release. lol

I find it funny that Penta isn't wearing the scarf in the CTR beta credits. Doesn't this give Crash 3's appearance more of a chance of being him?

I'm inclined to believe that Penta Penguin was among the penguin enemies in Crash 2, but since they all look exactly a like, it would be impossible to know which penguin is Penta. But it was confirmed in the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy that the penguin from Crash 3 is Penta, even though Naughty Dog never confirmed this. But with Naughty Dog having moved to other things, Vicarious Visions were totally within their right to do this.

Year: 1997. Consoles: PS1 & PS4. Titles: Crash 2: Cortex Strikes Back! & Crash Bandicoot: N Sane Trilogy. Info: There was regular penguins serving as enemies & after a short while, they spin attack, much longer than Crash.

It was always my thought that Penta (and his girlfriend Gurin) were meant to be call backs to the Konami game Penguin Adventure (Dream Continent Adventure: 夢大陸アドベンチャー ) considering the fact there are two penguins and the female is shown as lighter/pink in colour. As one comment mentioned, "Naught Dog staff loved Parodius (パロディウス)", which was also created by Konami in 1990 (7 years after Penguin Adventure), and there is a character named Pentarou (ペン太郎), with the first half meaning 'Penguin' and the second half, 'Tarou' being used in folktales such as Momotarou (桃太郎 - Peach Boy), and Pentarou is the son of Penta (ペン太). So we can assume that Penta (ペン太) was originally an even shorter version of Pentarou (ペン太郎) when Parodius (パロディウス) was released, but the name didn't really get the message across and so Penta (ペン太) was given a son with the full name Pentarou (ペン太郎). So either way it was the same penguin, regardless of whether the game was 'Penguin Adventure' or 'Parodius' that inspired Crash Bandicoot's Penta Penguin. But Andy Gavin actually said that it was a Universal Studios staff member who liked to play Sexy Parodius (セクシーパロディウス) which was released in 1996. "[...]This task had been assigned to our nominal producer at Universal, a gentleman who mostly sat in his office and played Sexy Parodius." It's highly likely that they all played the games and were aware of the character. But considering that the Manga, with 'Penta', was drawn by Ari Kawashima in 1998, potentially before work began on CTR that was announced May 1999 and didn't enter alpha until August 1999 (and that Penta was a late addition, evidenced by his lack of stats and real voice files in the NTSC release), we can assume the character was invented by either Ari Kawashima or someone at CoroCoro Comic (コロコロコミック) at least. It would also make more sense for a Japanese artist to be more aware/interested in paying homage to a Konami character. I can guess that because they wanted to pay tribute to Konami and use the name 'Penta' they couldn't use a similarly looking penguin, and so added the scarf to distinguish their character and Konami's, avoiding lawsuit. CTR is essentially an unfinished game, which is why the Beta version shows Fake Crash/Penta with placeholder models in the credits, that had to be cut, and why Penta does not have his own larger model built/custom animation on the podiums and thus has a normal penguin.

Who is fake crash? A creation of cortex or brio or a glorified version but of crash from going through time?

Here's a silly video suggestion: crash bootleg games. Not sure how rare they are, you could probably find some at a thrift store or online for a good price. There's a really weird one for Gameboy, and a rip-off of another game but called crash Bandicoot on SEGA Genesis. Just some examples. It'd be funny to watch. But if you don't want to or aren't able that's fine.

What even IS Penta Penguins character?: Well, stand up, so you can sit down because your probably already sitting down, if your walking, good for you your probably a normal person, if your in a car, turn your phone off and keep your eyes on the road, anyway lets get onto what I think Penta's character is, since his character is all kinds of *F U C K E D* So I basically think he was a test character, or a unfinished character, or a scrapped character that was left in by accident, and I have many pieces of evidence to support this: First off, one of the obvious ones, *P E N G U I N Y A Y 1* *P E N G U I N Y A Y 2* Almost all of Penta's voice lines are by a goose, but these ones were probably placeholders for the unfinished "yay" sounds, second piece of evidence is how you only get him from a cheat code, most developers will do this to get characters that are for experiments, and sometimes they forget to get them out, (I think this is actually how the first cheat code was invented) And another thing, whenever you get a mask as Penta, the little box says you have Uka Uka, but you get Aku Aku when you use it instead of Uka Uka, I cannot explain why this is in, maybe a glitch they didn't fix because it was a test character or something, ANOTHER thing is his model, you can see that his eyes...Are VERY close together, I don't know if this is me but they look very off, so maybe that might be because they didn't plan for this character to be out, but I'm not going to look at this one too much, but my FINAL point is his winning thing, it is basically the penguin without the scarf, it may have just been a test to see what it would look like, but I wont look at this too much like the last point, because I cant really explain this, BUT that ends my theory on what Penta Penguin's character in CTR is, hopefully people like this.

More precisely, Beenox clarified it is Penta in Nitro-Fueled by adding a scarf to the penguin. Which is really cool. Whether that was the intention in the original game or not, is impossible to say.
