The only people who would claim Whitney and Mariah are in the same league as Celine Dion are those that don't know anything about vocal quality and for some reason think that spewing melisma somehow equates to ability. Celine is able to stay on key and hit all the notes of her studio recordings whilst singing live. Neither Whitney nor Mariah had/ have the control to do that, which is why they always shied away from trying to hit their studio notes during live performances.

Simply, Whitney has a powerhouse voice and Mariah has that magical voice!

That’s crazy. Whitney was scheduled to do 2 other Oscars performances. The first one she was either sick or just gave birth and the 3rd one she got replaced by Faith Hill due to other reasons ☹️

Mariah clearly outsang Whitney at Oprah's. And here, Whitney was probably mad when people clapped after Mariah started to sing. Hence her improvisation, Mariah chose to keep up with her in order to harmonize, cause the performance would have been a mess if she improvise as well.

This is what we called 100% live, no mimic, no playback, just sincere live singing. Both women are singing gracefully yet with their own attitude. Epic!

@Riley Exactly! They get so triggered when we state the FACTS. Sure, Mariah had more range and the whistle register. But Whitney had PLENTY of range in her prime as well. She had a more powerful voice, piercing tone and headvoice. She also was a better LIVE performer. End of story 😁

Both Whitney and Mariah share alot of gospel musical influences. Which is why I believe they sound so similar. Both had the influence of the black church even though Mariah grew up with her Irish mother who is an opera singer. Mariah was heavily influenced by the same gospel artists Whitney Houston came up around. So they both have a similar vocal style. I always wished they did more songs together.

People aren’t giving Mariah enough credit for assisting in a beautiful duet. She definitely flowered through the vocal issues that obviously plagued her in the late 90’s and still managed to hold her own with one of the greatest. Because she is one of the greatest too.

Check the other ladies performances, she is always cutting through orchestras and drowning them out atimes..This is normal for mARIAH... nOTHING WRONG WITH HER VOICE, HER VOICE IS VERY CLEAN HERE, THE RASP WAS very minimal..

Yes!! There is a possibility they performed this another time but we don’t know for sure…

The thing here is that they are not only the greatest vocalists of all time, their voices also compliments. Whitney has this powerful and strong voice while Mariah has this airy, majestic, Angelic tone. You know right away that it's them singing from the very moment they open their mouths. Plus thing is Mariah really writes well ... hello she has 18 number 1 songs all written by her.

Mariahs mic was turned down u can literally see her screaming and the note isnt as loud as whitneys. Its so obvious they wanted to set her up. Anyways she came back at them in 3:21 showing why shes the songbird supreme!
