@@bjt20f2 putting them on shrubs is fine if you don't have an outdoor clothesline. It works because the sun on a sunny day fades things, like some objects left in sunny windows will fade. Back when I waited on tables my white shirts would start to yellow a bit, my mother showed me the trick of using TSP in the wash then hanging my laundry outside on a sunny day. I do want to try Laine's recipe the next time I have some older yellowed linens.

Thank you for the precautions because I would have dumped it all in at once

I have had to do this with pants that got mold spots. I used all the ingredients listed as well as white vinegar. I had to scrub with a brush as well. Boiling water was critical!! Never let kids throw wet towels for days in the laundry basket!!

You can also start with hot water in a bucket, add the oxy and linens and let sit for up to 3 days. I've seen this remove stains and dingyness that boiling never did.

I just found your channel this past weekend and have binged like mad! I too have a love for old houses and antiques and I have a fair number of old linens. I was excited to try your recipe for whitening and I have to say, it worked beautifully! I hung everything out to dry in the sun everything came out looking fantastic. Just discovered this channel, just tried the silverware cleaning process--thumbs up on that! I've soaked whites in just Oxy Clean for days, & they get white, but it doesn't remove the age-yellowing like this process. Thanks a bajillion! Cana't wait to see what other tricks you have up your sleeve!

It seems as though some of your pieces may be dark or more brown in hue because they are tea-stained linens. Tea-stained linens were a popular way to colour linen when you didn't want them white or snowy white. You make strong black tea and soak the lace or linen in the boiling solution. I learned this technique from a Danish grandmother who tatted, crocheted, or did cut-work every day of her long life. We had trunks of her creations from fancy potholders to bedspreads and shams. You are now trying to reverse the tea dye and as you've indicated it will take more than one boiling to remove it. Good luck.

They weren’t tea stained. They had been stored in a linen closet directly on acidic wood shelves, causing the discoloration. That will certainly cause the need for multiple boilings, but the cause of the discoloration was clear. I tea stain many items myself, and this process will actually reverse that technique fairly quickly.

I have some beautiful crocheted items that my aunt made that are yellowed and stained. I am definitely going to try this process. She used cotton thread, so it should be fine. In Mexico, people use hot water, salt and lemon juice, do not wring out, hang in the sun to dry, bright white when finished, rewash in machine and dry, done.

Found your channel and am enjoying every minute. My 16-year-old daughter LOVES vintage things and buys vintage (from the 40s/50s) formal dresses whenever she sees them at flea markets/antique stores. These are lacy, satiny dresses. Just beautiful. But they are almost all yellowing. Would this process work for them? She is scared to try anything as some of them seem very fragile already with wear and age. But she would just love to be able to try restoring them.

My mother from Poland would soak the whites in water and bleach and then wash them. She also cleaned our tile grout with bleach and a q tip

Bleach makes fibers weaker and could damage them. That's why OxyClean is used, it is oxygen based and better for antiques.

I have baby clothes that I would like to hand down to my children, Like their Christening outfits and , with a gasp, I saw yellowed stains on them even though I know that I washed them before storing them. sigh.... I will try this so they can choose whether they want to use these for their babies.

What suggestions might you have for those yellow stains that just don’t yield to this process?

I would try a paste of oxiclean and water first. Sunlight might help to fade the stains. Aside from that, old things and old people sometimes get scuffs and stains. You can still love them despite their imperfections. Blessings to you 💙

Hi Laine! Would you use this process on white linens with colored embroidery on them? I'm thinking not since the colors may run with the hot water. Do you have any suggestions for embroidered items? I have a ton of them from my grandmothers and would love to bring them up to 'usable' stage.

I'd love to try this on my 100% cotton lace curtains....but I'd worry that the boiling water will shrink them! They've already shrunk by washing once in hot water. 😥 Any ideas?

Do you have bluing? If so, a drop of bluing in with the soda and salt will give you the same result!

Basically, a you know you have reached a rolling boil when you can stir the pot, and have it still boil.

Laine, you seem like such a sweetheart. I'm seriously interested in moving to Helena but it's not my decision alone and it wouldn't happen for a while if it does happen. Same process will work. I did a beautiful ecru bedspread with colored embroidery this week, and it turned out beautifully

How long would you let it soak if you were doing the bathtub method? Since the water would be a little bit less hot and the volume would be much greater?

Use boiling water that you heat on the oven and take to the tub. Leave for about 15 minutes. Stirring regularly

Same process works great

we DO do flips/house renovations, but when we bought our Queen Anne , there was absolutely no way we could go through, knocking walls out, throwing paint around, we really had an admiration for this house. like we don't own it, it is a part of history that we are taking part in. Before this house. you would NEVER catch my husband and I at an antique store!!! We love this house so much.

You can also do this with only the baking soda and salt, it may just take more times through the process to achieve the results. You might add a little bluing if you can find that.

If you are in UK, someone swore by Domestos White and water solution. Soak it for a bit and hand wash gently.

Wow! You’re lucky you didn’t get burned, Laine!!! I’ve whitened duvet covers and curtains in my washing machine. I ordered VERY LARGE net washing bags (like lingerie bags except BIG!) I used HOT water, OXY CLEAN, Baking Soda, and vinegar. I put them on a SOAK program (if you don’t have one you can just pause your machine) they came out as white as could be! I semi dried them in the bag, too. Just to be clear: I used vinegar instead of salt. Do NOT use both!!

Would this apply to old baby clothes also?😃

Hope you see this. I need advice. My daughter is having a baby girl. I have saved her Feltman baby dresses. They are dingy. A few are a pale pink. Do you think I can apply this to getting them clean? She wants to use them. They are polyester and cotton.

Yes- if they are poly they should be colorsafe. I don’t think you’ll have any problems at all with this method!

Be careful as this is not a good method for silk. Just check the fabric content before you do it!
