White Wine In The Sun by Tim Minchin

Музыка

A sentimental song about Christmas. This version is taken from the Australian 'Ready For This?' DVD. Every year, all proceeds from the sale of (either version of) this song during the months of November, December and January, go to an organisation which supports children and/or adults on the autism spectrum. This year, that will be Aspect in Australia.
If you have it already, you may fancy gifting it via iTunes, along with the socks, jocks or chocs… or you can donate directly to Aspect here: www.autismspectrum.org.au/don...
December 2012: "It's been six years since I wrote my little tribute to Christmas, and I've finally recorded a studio version. Huzzah!"
You can download it internationally from iTunes here: itunes.apple.com/album/white-...
and for "non-apple people", it's on Amazon (UK) here: www.amazon.co.uk/White-Wine-in... and Amazon (US) here: www.amazon.com/White-Wine-in-t....

Thank you! This was my favourite Christmas song last year. This year, my Dad passed away and my son is going through ASD assessment has been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This has changed what this song means for me and is going to be my families hardest Christmas this year.

Tim, you made me miss my Mum so much. I am no longer able to visit her due to family "stuff" and you made me laugh and cry thinking about how special she is. I will be drinking white wine with my very special husband and our spoiled rotten siamese cat! We'll share the christmas sushi and prawns and think about good times and love. Thanks for all the beauty you bring into this world. May your christmas be filled with family, and may you be safe and well....

My wife Ellie (girlfriend at the time) and I came to see you in Manchester, England in December 2010. We had been together nearly a year and it was her Christmas present to me, which was amazing. You closed with this song which was quite an emotional experience. When we left the arena, it had snowed and we enjoyed a fun filled walk back to our hotel from the arena. We have listened to this song every Christmas since. My wife died on September 10th, 2017, 3 months ago today, at the age of 27. I will always continue listening to this song every Christmas. Thank you.

Steve B I don't hate God, just the people who do stupid shit in the name of religions. Believe me, I know people did great things for their religion beliefs, I mean religion was supposed to bring people closer, but you have to agree that others did awful things as well. They are the problem here, not God, not religion in general, but the people who give religion a bad name. So, please don't read my comment and assume that I'm just another God-hating atheist, when the only real problem I have is with people using religion to bring more misery than we already have.

Exactly. I think for me, I cry because I feel like I have missed out on that fundamental human experience of having a family like that--one that makes me feel safe and accepted in this world. It's like a hiraeth, a homesickness for a home that never truly was, and one I cannot return to. I have found those people in life, but they are not the family I see and associate with Christmas.

Having turned 18 recently, I’ve started to think about this song a little differently. It’s one of those things you realize as you get older, when you think about how as a child it was all about the presents and food. And you’re told by your parents or whoever that as you get older that stuff will stop mattering, and you feel a little sad since you don’t want it to stop mattering. You don’t want Christmas to become boring and meaningless. But the once you do become older you realize that it’s not that Christmas stops mattering to you. It’s just that your priorities during Christmas change. You do stop caring as much about the presents, and you start caring nag more about seeing your friends and family. Especially if you all live far away, you’re all just happy to be able to see each other again and to be able to take one day out of the year to appreciate one another and spend time together. And I think that’s pretty neat.

I lost my mom to cancer when I was in college. As I grew into adulthood I began to enjoy these little social moments more and more, valuing the time spent with the people I love far more than the gifts they bring. I didn't used to like wine, but my mother was a big wine drinker, reds being her favorite. It always confused me when I was younger as I hated the taste, but just like my priorities and values changed, so did my tastes. Whenever I hear this song (which is often) I think on what could have been- all of us, my mother included, sitting around a table enjoying some wine as the snow falls around us on Christmas eve, sharing a few drinks and a level of understanding that wasn't possible while she was still with us. The thought is always bittersweet, but each year it gets a little less bitter, and all the more sweet.

I don't know your circumstances, but remember you can still love someone who disagrees with you on something fundamental. If they're in deep, they might not appreciate that you're still their family. They might be insulted or show their love by trying to bring you back into the fold. After all, from their point of view you've basically decided to damn yourself. Just be aware that they're wrong, and chances are they're probably trying to help in a very misguided way. If I'm making a load of wrong assumptions and they really are toxic or abusive, then I wish you good luck in finding your own people, and for everyone to heal.

I like this song too. Not sure why but it speaks to me. Sorry to hear about your dad, that's sucks. Both my dad and my mom have been gone for more than 10- years. The bad news is that the loss never goes away. The good news is that it does get better with time. And you can see them any time you want. You just gotta know where to look. (Psst! In your heart.) Not sure God is in there anywhere because if his current representatives are any indicator then there's a very good argument that he really doesn't exist. However, we do! So please try to enjoy this ride we call life -- that's pretty much the entire point (if there even is a point).

@@jonathanwelch5084 how is it yours? How did you get it? Tim never gave much thought to that either but rather just lied. “Science adjusts its views based on what's observed Faith is the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved."― Tim Minchin Tim does not know what biblical faith is because he just does not care to know but he'd rather fart out lies. Biblically, faith means trust. It's a trust by evidence seen. God asks that we prove things. To reason. To get knowledge. To study. God has nothing to hide. We develop trust from what is seen, and that which is not seen yet is trusted also because of the trust built up from what is seen. It's much like a human relationship. We don't trust much until a person has gained that trust from what is observed. The difference is though, God is not limited to human powers. He created us. Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. crossexamined.org/biblical-faith-vs-blind-faith/ www.truthortradition.com/articles/what-does-the-bible-say-about-faith www.revisedenglishversion.com/Appendix/16/Faith_is_Trust www.truthortradition.com/articles/faith-a-confident-expectation-of-gods-promises-coming-to-pass www.truthortradition.com/articles/hebrews-1-11-and-faith His opening of "Science adjusts its views based on what's observed" Tim is a liar. He believes his god of nothing did miracles naturally with nothing as proof it could. He cares NOTHING about what is observed. What a hypocrite! His god claims to have given us the creation of the universe naturally but that can't be. Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.

@@2fast2block I'm not saying its bad that you believe in a god but you cannot force religious behavior upon others. Based on your arguement all things in the universe come from a god, correct? However, there are many theories that state otherwise. Think of the big bang theory, one of the most talked about theory's. The Big Bang Theory is the leading explanation about how the universe began. At its simplest, it says the universe as we know it started with a small singularity, then inflated over the next 13.8 billion years to the cosmos that we know today. Much of what we understand about the Big Bang Theory comes from mathematical formulas and models. Astronomers can, however, see the "echo" of the expansion through a phenomenon known as the cosmic microwave background. While the majority of the astronomical community accepts the theory, there are some theorists who have alternative explanations besides the Big Bang - such as eternal inflation or an oscillating universe. I am not telling you that you are wrong. But people have other belief's and you are trying to force yours upon others which should be considered as wrongdoing. Please get some help and education before trying to make a stance in the astronomical community. Sources: www.space.com/25126-big-bang-theory.html

Tim Minchin will always be in my heart. A year ago my 7 year old brother had a brain tumour and Tim and his songs got me through the time where I didn’t know what to do and kept me from calling it a day. Despite this, as a whole, I don’t have a good relationship with my family and this song makes me cry because every time I listen to this I hope. I cry and hope for a time hopefully in the short distance where I no longer feel like this and can create this image with a future partner and my kids. If I make it to that point I will be forever grateful for Tim and I hope that others can try to see the inspiration in his songs like I seek. Not all humans are bad - there are gems like Tim that can keep us going even if every day hurts. I didn’t post this for attention I simply wrote out my feelings because I appreciate what Tim has done for me.

"I don't go in for ancient wisdom. I don't believe just 'cause ideas are tenacious it means that they're worthy. I get freaked out by churches. Some of the hymns that they sing have nice chords, but the lyrics are dodgy. And yes, I have all of the usual objections to the miseducation of children who, in tax-exempt institutions, are taught to externalize blame and to feel ashamed and to judge things as plain right or wrong. But I quite like the songs." I love this song.

not gonna lie, i feel like the "I don't believe just 'cause ideas are tenacious it means that they're worthy." would have worked better with the "i am hardly religious," and "i dont go in for ancient wisdom" would have been better with "i'd rather break bread with desmond tutu to be honest" it could just be that i don't know any better, but that's like my only nitpick. love the song otherwise.

I stay out of churches but nothing is as bad as dingbat liars like Tim. He's the worst.
