13 years later and I hear this for the first time. Awesome. I was reading on the Ed Sheeran law suit and how those songs in it are similar. Someone directed me to this song. And, I have got to say that, Ed's song is a different song. As are all these songs in this remix. I hope that the judge has viewed this video before coming to a conclusion on Ed's case. Amen. Good luck Ed.

For those who want to know, the four chords at the I, V, vi, and IV chords of any key. The Roman numerals representing the note in the key’s scale (key of C Major would be C Major Scale). The lower case means a minor chord. So, in the key of C major, it would be C, G, Am, F. In the key of G major, it would be G, D, Em, C. In D major it would be D, A, Bm, G. It’s all in that order. It was the successor to the “turnaround” chord progression (same chords, different order of progression) of the “doowop” music of 1940’s and 50’s R&B. Just about any R&B (and most rock and roll) song from that era can be played using that progression (I, vi, IV, V). Unchained Melody uses that progression.

Just a note of clarity for people wondering about the Ed Sheeran trial: these 4 chords * aren't * the four chords in Thinking Out Loud. It does, however, demonstrate the argument Ed Sheeran was trying to make, which is that hundreds of pop songs use the same chord progressions as each other, and there are only so many chord progressions you can use.

I read through some comments and saw no mention of the actual chords. This is the 1-5-6-4 chord progression. Basically ... the musical notes go A-G. If you're in the key of A then 1 is A, 2 is B, 3 is C etc etc.-- So in this example 1 is A, 5 is E, 6 is F and 4 is D. That's it. That's the secret sauce.

+THEGREATMAX Sorry, but you are actually wrong. First of all: Do, Re, Me, Fa, So, La, Ti = C D E F G A B/H. Second of all, there is also half notes, idk if you can call them that, but whatever. That means that theres also C#, D#, F#, G#, and A#, so there is more chords/notes, than you think m8. There are also different variations of all of these chords, such as Cm E7 G#maj Amaj7 and many more. And if you have a good musical ear, you can hear the difference of almost all the chords. Most people can hear the difference of a E chord or Em chord. E is like, more happy than Em, that sounds scary. But now are the question, why do so many people use the same chords so many times then? You see, these guy used the same chords over and over. But maybe the original songs used other chords than these guys used. Maybe the original used C Am F G, and they used D Bm G A. But all the guys did was, to take the chords 1+ up. So C + 1 chord up = D. Am + 1 chord up = Bm, ect. Didn't mean to hate on you, I was just correcting you ;) (also sorry for this long comment)

Keep in mind it's over a speaker system. It's easy to miss words like that, and when you can't rewind, your brain will fill in details to make it make sense. Even if you do hear it properly, without cuing, most people will assume they misheard. The first time I watched this, I thought they said "twenty", which made me assume they were older than they looked. There's also the common phrasing of a "collective" amount of time doing things (eg. "we have 200 years of computer programming experience in our team, all 10 of us have done this for 20 years").

Not seeing a lot of explanation in the comments, but it's getting a lot of questions. Because the progression is relatively easy to play, it's a fairly simple trick for the musicians to jump between the different songs. What's relevant is the chord progression, not the chords themselves. There are a lot of people going on about G D Em and C, but that's not quite right. There are eight notes in a full scale, but I and VIII are the same note in different octaves. This chord progression is written as V, V/V, iii, I - a major chord built over the fifth note of the scale, a major chord on the fifth of the fifth, a minor chord on the third note of the scale, and a major chord over the first note of the scale (or 'do', if you prefer). That pattern can be written in any key at any pitch, but as long as it follows the right pattern of these chords in this order, the songs can be interchanged and sung over each other. The pattern and order matter. The key does not.

That's interesting how you wrote it as V, V/V, iii, I Normally when I hear this progression, I'd immediately think of it as I-V-vi-IV. When it comes to the chords themselves, there isn't a difference, but the rest of the scale would be slightly different (the way you notated it would have one more sharp in the key signature, or one fewer flat). Is there any advantage to notating it as V-V/V-iii-I? I'm just curious

Cupsof Tea The numbers indicate the place in the key that the chord resides. For example. In the key of C the first chord is C Major or 1. All major keys follow a certain chord pattern. 1 is Major, 2 is minor, 3 is minor, 4 is Major, 5 is minor, 6 is minor, 7 is diminished. Following that pattern, in the key of C you have these chords. (A letter followed by nothing is a Major chord a letter fallowed by a m is a minor chord. 1 C, 2 Dm, 3 Em, 4 F, 5 G, 6 Am, 7 B dim. (Dim stands for a diminished chord, but I won't explain that right now.) So the key of F follows the same chord pattern. 1 F, 2 Gm, 3 Am, 4 Bb, 5 C, 6 Dm, 7 E dim This same rule works for every major key.
