White coat syndrome - The psychological link

Ойын-сауық

White coat syndrome is where people without hypertension get a high blood pressure reading at the doctors because they're nervous at the clinic. But in a familiar setting, their blood pressure is completely normal. This is a problem because the doctors could assume you have high blood pressure based only on the readings taken in their office.
I posted another video about how to bring down your blood pressure at the doctor's office which should help most people. • WHITE COAT SYNDROME | ...
However, some people may need to delve a little deeper into their thoughts. That's what we explore in today's video about white coat syndrome.

Thank you, Clare! A few days ago before meeting my new medical doctor... I'd gotten lost & disoriented on the way there- so I was already stressed & late for my appointment. (My average blood pressure naturally runs a low 110/65) In the doctors' office, my blood pressure was 166/88. I am very sensitive, yet I was uncharacteristically overly-anxious. The nurse who took my pressure had mentioned the term 'white coat issue' and my new doctor also repeated that term. I didn't ask or know what it meant because I just wanted to get out of there. Today I saw your video and feel so blessed that this issue was brought to my attention. I'm also relieved that my new Dr is aware that I need assistance in that area. Your blessed knowledge makes a huge difference... again thank you so much, Clare!

I agree about your Dr. I think you found a really good one! It's amazing what a difference anxiety can make to your blood pressure, but as you've witnessed, for the most part it's a temporary issue and only spikes for a short time. So anything you can do before the appointment to relax will help you get a more reliable reading. Here's the first video I made about white coat syndrome kzread.info/dash/bejne/gpiko8ixmdHXeKw.html. You might find that helpful too if you haven't watched it already. Thank you so much for your kind words, and I wish you much luck moving forward with this.

Great advice. I have chronic HBP but I am on medication for it. I am pregnant so blood pressure is a very important thing they have to keep track of. I also have majjjjor white coat syndrome. I take my blood pressure daily and it’s in the normal ranges. I now know that I have a phobia with the docs taking my BP because I have been sooo terrified of preeclampsia while pregnant. It also doesn’t help I am having to go to the doctors completely alone due to Covid-19, my readings are always higher. Your voice is so calming as well which definitely helps with this topic! Fears: 1.Developing preeclampsia 2.Having to have baby before she’s ready to come out 3.This other human being totally relying on me and my body and well being so she can thrive

What a challenging time for you right now. I'm sure that your doctors are doing all they can to keep your blood pressure normal, but I'm really glad that you are tracking your own blood pressure too (which is much more likely to reflect your real numbers). Please be gentle with yourself because these are trying times for everyone and it's to be expected that you would feel extra stress and pressure as a soon to-be-mother. Your fears are completely normal but they are not facts (except number 3, of course). My other video about white coat syndrome has a few tips about keeping calm in the doctor's office kzread.info/dash/bejne/gpiko8ixmdHXeKw.html. It may be helpful for the appointments for rest of your pregnancy. I wish you much luck in keeping calm and healthy.

@@mariahsiddiqui4515 hi there! I’m so sorry to hear you are going thru something similar. Great news though, my whole pregnancy went AMAZING and I had no preeclampsia whatsoever! It’s so hard having high BP and working yourself up even more. I have found that trying not to control my anxiety and just accepting it makes me feel a lot better. I'm sorry you've had such horrible experiences with a doctor. But the good news is that your brain can un-learn those associations between health professionals and fear. It might take a few appointments, where you purposely relax before the appointment, and take some deep breaths while speaking to them. But you'll be able to replace the bad memories with (hopefully) better ones, if you have a more pleasant Dr now.

Thank you for your advice and tips. I love your two videos on white coat syndrome. I've got the advice written down from both videos on my phone and will implement them immediately. I recently enlisted in the military and they do a physical, and the first time they checked my blood pressure was high (nervous for the whole physical) and that made me nervous that I wasn't going to make it into the rest of the physical so that just made it worse. I somehow got a passing BP level after a doctor calmed me down. However today I went to donate blood, and it was high again because of the fear that something will hold me back from being able to help those in need. I've got a monitor at home and I check it every night and it's great levels at home 120ish/75ish so I know that it's absolutely a mental thing of not wanting to fail. Anyways, thanks for the videos. You're doing a service to people like me. I also hope your heart palpitations are getting better each day. Keep up the great work, you deserve every subscriber and view you get.

Thank you so much for your kind words of support. It means a lot to me. And also, thank you for your service. It's great that you are taking control of this, monitoring your blood pressure at home. And you have an understanding of how your mind might be causing this issue, many people don't understand that their thoughts might be causing physical changes in their body and just wait for a doctor to fix the symptoms. Thanks again and good luck!

That's so frustrating. But just like any phobia, you can break that fear associated with going to the doctor's. If you can figure out what you're scared about exactly. In the meantime, keep tracking your BP at home, because then you know what's a normal reading for you when you go to your doctor's office.

Hello Clare, first and foremost thank you for your two videos about whit coat syndrome. I wish I could get to talk to you personally with you since I have a lots to share and to ask questions also. I had this since I was at my teenage years until now. It was in my 30's i tried to open this up to health allies taking bo and even to doctors but too bad that here in Philippines, we are ignorant about this syndrome. Because of this I felt like this is abnormal thing in me but as I do research about this realized that this is normal. I had an anxiety in getting bp and phobia because of my experience when I was a kid. As a result, i got a high functioning one to a point whenever i just see bp monitor, my heart beats fast like I panic. During my first dose for COVID-19, I had decided to talk to a psychotherapist to address this. On my second dose, still the same. 7 months after, today, I got booster. Still the same. Got too tired explaining and allowing them to believe that there are people who have fear in taking bp. Too bad that after a reading even I asked for few minutes to relax, they didn't bothered so my bp was so high as 180/80. But there's development on my session with my therapist, she told me to desensitize which I did reading my bp at home. As result, i can now control if i get my own bp and if I know the person who will get the bp. So now I am working on how to calm if random people will get my bp. Too bad that there's fewer options where i can have bp reading outside with a stranger. Glad also that because of my therapy, i continuously digging where this syndrome is rooting from so I can totally fix this. You're videos are great help for insights. Thanks clare!

I'm surprised they would diagnose hypertension after one reading. It certainly puts a lot of urgency on getting it right first time, which will make someone more stressed and more likely their BP shoots up.

When i was there her secretary, getting my result while observing her reaction it seems that i am in a big trouble, my anxiety started to rised. And when she got my blood pressure it was 150/70. The anxiety looks getting worst and now everytime i had a check up my bp got spike up and it gives me so much stress in my life. My friend died because of this and my father. You express yourself very clearly about how walking to your appointment and your worries about the secretary's reaction spiked your anxiety and blood pressure. I'm sorry to hear of your friend and father's passing, and I have no doubt that your experiences of their illnesses are playing on your mind and influence your thoughts about high blood pressure and what it all means. This video is an answered prayer. I was wondering why do i have to deal with white coat and why do i have it. As i did some thinking i remembered the time I had a panic attack and I remembered my parents calling the ambulance, instead of them calming me down they made me freak out even more which made my blood pressure rise. I never had an issue with blood pressure until I started to fear it once i saw the number when the rescue people check it and told me it was to high in the time because of fear. This was like 9 years ago and i noticed that the fear did not leave, so, now I am finally doing something about. When i go to the doctors office I am trembling which make it rises but when i am by myself it is at a lower rate. So anything dealing with blood pressure pretty much made me fearful and now it is time for healing. As of right now i spoke with my doctor and gave her a log of my B/P and she told me that I do not have hypertension because of the results i had alone. However, i still get a bit nervous. I believe that I will overcome white coat and I am glad that others can relate to my story but i am ready to be free from this prison of anxiety and fear. Thanks for this video and you just gained a new subscriber!

I know it's difficult. Often, writing your thoughts down, can help you to recognize them and accept them for what they are, just thoughts. Alongside that is to start slowing down your breath and practice this throughout the day. Then when it comes to the crucial time, you are more prepared to relax and calm down your BP.
