Was shocked at how much I liked it. I have several bottles twice and even three times as much as the cost of this whiskey and I enjoy this just as much if not more. I generally do not like heavy smoker peat but this was just fine. I think this is better suited for colder months but find it to be a great daily sipper at a great price. I did a blind tasting with this and Johnnie Walker Blue and picked the double black over the blue. Some of you may think I'm crazy but that's the honest truth.

Much respect to you. Taste is subjective, I should say. I have tried both the Blue and Double Black. I prefer the smoother, and sweeter taste of Double Black. Cheers!

Horst is a legend

Double black is the best blended whiskey I have ever tasted. Sure, single malt's are better if you know what you like and what to buy. The original Macallan 10 year Sherry was one of the best singles ever made until the people at Macallan got greedy and discontinued it to jack up prices and put cute labels on the bottle.

This is a fantastic whisky. I love the smoky ashy taste that this scotch has. Definitely on my list of recommended whiskys. If you have extra cash, rather buy this over the normal black label.

Thank you very much for your review of this whiskey! I liked him too. Not the first time I understood its aroma and taste, but I tasted it. I revealed its taste with a piece of lightly salted salmon. The fish added to its aftertaste.

Im a fan of lagavulin and oban after tasting this double black i have to say I like it!! Good smooth , kind a sweet and smoky!

i got this as a gift and im quite enjoying ot as a sipping whisky a couple of nights a week. its smokey bitter but sweet too. not incredible but also not bad. just pleasant.

Its $45 in Southern Californa, which I wouldn’t pay, but luckily they mixed up prices and got it for $33. I liked it for that price🤓. Light citrus on nose, but taste of ash or campfire that been put out, then a hint of butterscotch. Tried hour later and same nose but got smoked bacon & hint of honey or butterscotch. Cheers!

To me it tastes like raisins and caramel. After the second sip the smoke evolves and remains in the throat. You get the feeling of having swallowed an entire ham 😊. I like the old black label and love the double black. To me they are very different and I understand this flavour is not for everyone to enjoy.

I really enjoy the 12 yr Black (esp for the $), & not ever having had this JWDB, i see no reason to after comparing your excellent comments on both...🍸

I heard you mention Highland park. To me a very good scotch. Which in the line do you like and is there a scotch same in price that you like better. I was tasting the double black with you and agree that it's not as good as black.To me CV it has an almost licorice finish that kind of sticks around .I like that.

Had never tasted the double black, only black, gold, green... Just opened a bottle, gotta say the double black is really better than the black one. great flavor, smoky but not too much, great last longing aftertaste. Are there better "smoked" whiskies? yeah! but not sure if for the same price.

I guess my nose is just different from Horst’s. I can’t detect any peat smoke in Highland Park yet I have no problem finding it in JW Double Black even though they’re both peated.

Is johnnie walker double black NAS and 3 years matured in charred oak cask?

Drank a bottle of this over the course of a month and really enjoyed it. Nice smoke and nice sweetness. No Oogie or Lag 16, but perfectly drinkable. For the price, it's well worth it.

I bought the Double Black today because it was on sale.. But I don't like it... I bought the Gold Reserve 2 weeks ago, and I love that one. But the Double Black is awful compared to the Gold Reserve. I think I'll use the Double Black as a mixer.

Double black is soooo overrated. Let it sit in a glass for 10 minutes, tastes like tar.

Had it first time yesterday love that burnt taste it leaves on the palette it’s interesting.

Hey, is there any possibility that the bitterness you are tasting, might be coming from the caramel coloring they add?

Like this much better than regular black label. Smokey and smooth. It's not a wee beastie or lagavulin but still great in its own way.

Is Horst's microphone inside his mouth? I'm not being facetious, I just cannot understand how I can hear the inside of his mouth. :/

Crazy how he can conclude how many parts per million of smoke there is! He's a human spectrometer!

I’m a big fan of black label, and of the peaty whiskeys like Ardbeg and Laphroaig, but I was actually pretty disgusted with the double black. I like smoky flavor, but it has to be done right. Double black tastes like someone put their cigarette out in a glass of black label and then tossed in some burnt cardboard. Abhorrent aftertaste. And I say this as a fan of the other Johnnie Walkers. For me this one is a total misfire.

Yes, those are the words that describe for me about smoky whisky. A near-finished cigarette was out out in a glass of JW or similar comparison. Not good nose and tatse, I'm afraid.

@@bibertkirk Ardbeg 10, Ardbeg Corryvreckan, Talisker 10, Caol ila 12, Laphroaig CQ, [Bourbon] Stag Jr, It's not smoky but has heavy Cask influence, which makes it really heavy If ur into that kind of thing haha.

Found a deeply discounted bottle of this, so giving it a whirl...nose is pretty good w/ light smoke (a bit hospital), some coconut / nuttiness, and yes some citrus / peach notes; lots of grain whisky peeping thru...palate is decent; perhaps a bit more smoke than the 12 yr Black, but less malt & more grain - not as fruity...more aggressive as well, and as Horst said, obviously younger...it's ok, but would never pay full retail for this...I'll stick with good 'ol smooth Black Label...my score: 78/100

You are not adding acid to split the starch but pharma enzymes, just like in shitty industrial beer!

This review is opposite my experience with double black. Upon opening, you could smell it across the room. Like smoky cough syrup. Nosing it is as much unpleasant and intense.

Im not sure why JW has any sort of following. You can get a decent single malt for cheaper than many of the JW's. JW Red is the worst whisky I have ever tasted.

The finish is like a cheap cigar and burnt toast. The black label is heavenly, but I think they fucked this one up.

Tastes like rubbing alcohol with cigarette butts floating in it. Very ashy and medicinal. I love smokey scotch bit this one is best used for drain cleaner..

Can't help thinking that the smoke is there to hide all the cheap grain whiskey.

This Whiskey tastes like burnt pepper with no good taste. I dont like this one what so ever

12 year old black is much better. This will turn you into a dragon if you drink too much of it and you’ll definitely be waking up with some pain in the head

I didn't like it

Mmmm. Decent smoke. Slightly creamy. Caramel deliciousness. Sweetness without being syntheticly sweet. Yes, a wee bit overpriced and into single malt territory. But some airline sized bottles on a travel make the trip even more pleasurable.

It tastes bitter like ash, didn’t like it at all.

Never really found johnnie walker any good. Had a johnnie walker blue I was given as a gift. Tasted and smelt mostly of paint stripper imo. The blacks not much better.

I wasn't impressed by this one. If you like a smokey bitter scotch then look no further. I prefer single malt scotch, and increasingly prefer a good bourbon.

I just tasted the double black, and it tastes like solvent. It's awful. There is nothing smooth about it. Super bitter, the fruity taste is like orange flavored dish soap. I have been drinking whiskeys for all but 20 of my 61 years. This is not whisky. Is it possible I got a bad bottle? I have never taken booze back to a store for a refund, nut I would like to take this bottle back where I got it, and ask if someone would kindly taste it, and see if they agree. It almost tastes like it was mixed with a little tequila and anti freeze.

That's an unfair review, it's not by far a great whisky but it's ok for the casual, non tasters drinkers, good enough to be enjoyable neat or mixed any day of the week if you need to relax and not being distracted by great flavors and aromas. If you drink whisky only to get great experiences, flavor developing and complexity you're going to be dissapointed and angry but if you know it"s a fair casual product you can find it convenient and good.

I agree. I think johnnie walker know how to market and so people with no taste drink gasoline and think they’re sophisticated while they’re raking in the money. Brilliant business men but rough scotch to sip
