It does feel that with these rules and some others (especially nerfing earthsaker and other artillery platforms not in plastic) that GW are providing great rules for plastic releases...hmm As always thanks for the great work!

Just before the video dropped my friend and I finished our 3rd heresy game, 2k points, DG vs IW. This game really showed the importance of direct fire and Vox coverage for barrage weapons, his scorpiuses missed twice, he had no vox at all, I had a single vox on my siege breaker, but because I didn't think to separate him from my Tyrants and they've been hiding from 2x5 HSS with Lascannons, I rarely had an ability to use my vox so my 2 rapiers missed 3 of their barrages.

Glad to see your videos again! Got two of these for my Night Lords and I think they are strong, but not OP by any means, especially with the new bikes out in a few weeks. I think these are a good counter to all the lascannon heavy squads that have popped up, and these in turn easily outflanked by sabres, jetbikes, land speeders etc. IMO it promotes a more well rounded army list as you now have viable targets for fast units sweeping in to hunt these hiding at the back of the board.

Good video! Just to highlight just how dramatic the effect of spreading out models has on the scorpius' output, spreading out models the maximum 2" from each other will mean each shot only hits 1 model if it doesn't scatter (since you place the blast marker directly over the center of a model and 1/2 of a 32mm base + 2" = 2.63" which is greater than the 2.5" radius of the 5" blast template) and 2-3 models if it scatters but still hits within the unit. Assuming average models hit being in the middle at 2, you only kill 1 marine (the math works out that about 1 marine dies per 2 hits). If the models are in a more typical looking formation a 5' blast template hits about 4-8 models (2-4 dead), and packed into a tight formation each on-target shot is hitting like 10-15 models (5-8 dead). Meanwhile for a similar cost a 5 man heavy support squad with missile launchers averages 2.77 marines killed per shooting phase. But, against 2+ save terminators or artificer sergeants the damage output drops dramatically. Plus they need line of sight to shoot, only fire snaps shots if they move, and don't have pinning on their damaging attacks. A sicaran arcus with lascannons kills 4.8 marines on average at the same cost as a squadron of 2 scorpius tanks. Definitely feels like these could go up like 20pts and still be fine.

As a word bearer (90% of my army has a 3+ save) player who has been playing with and against these weekly since release I find them significantly less egregious than 10 man Volkite or 10 man lascannon squads. Both of those units average more models removed a turn then a Scorpius.

They are also twice as expensive, the big upside of the scorpius is that it's barely more expensive than a tactical squad. But it definitely isn't the monster it used to be.

Seconded. My World Eaters are out here struggling with their legion trait being pretty useless on any vehicle, and trying to build a balanced force means taking shooty units that would be better in almost any other legion.

@Drinkwateritsgood4u true enough. I have one unit of 10 with jump packs that I run with a herald for fear and line. They are silly good, but they can't carry a 3k point game by themselves and I don't want to spam another unit of them, so as to not be "that guy".

Scorpius is fine as it is. I think other artillery should be balanced towards it.

Somewhere in between, I think. Scorp could lose pinning or be S7 or rend 5+, and be 20-30 points more. Other artillery could come down to the same.

I kind of agree with this some of the other artillery is absolute toss, look at the Praetor assault launcher, 650pts for one, admittedly large, S7 Ap4 blast.

excited to watch this after work. Planning to get two of these and I hope they arent too OP.

My small circle of friends have been buying up all the new Heresy releases thus far whilst I reserved the urge to expand my army. I finally went outside of the Age of Darkness set last week and snagged two of these. Feeling pretty guilty now, bugger.

Like everything its context I think. Whats in the rest of your army? All tactical marines and 2 of these would be fine for example. Dont feel bad, but knowing it might make less fun games means you’re ready for a solution if you need one! Or trade one to a mate :)

I have x2 20 strong tactical marines, x10 cataphractii, x2 spartans, x1 contemptor. Went for Alpha legion & after reading some Heresy books I figured sniping & trickery was their style. Expanding into the next 500p I went with your advice and made x2 Apothecarys. Then I added x2 Sabotuers & the x2 Scorpious (I seem to do most things twice) what would you recommend?

@@mrhippy6428 - Some games, maybe swap out a Saboteur for a Vigilator to mix it up. But, what Rite of War are you running? The two more common for Alpha Legion tend to be Headhunter or Recon Company. Headhunter won't let you start with those Spartan on the table, somewhat reducing their impact. Recon won't let you start with those Cataphractii on the table. Maybe get some more Recon squads with sniper rifles, Seekers, and Headhunters with magna-combis. Dynat can also be good to give infiltrate to units that previously did not have it. Some normal Land Raiders could be good as well. When infiltrating Seekers, if you give them a Proteus as a dedicated transport, it would also infiltrate.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, its given me a lot to think about. At the moment I am a casual player who goes to Warhammer World once a quarter to play. After decades of hiatus, I got back into the hobby mostly because Heresy was a call back to my Rogue Trader era, so I've gravitated toward the models that evoke the most nostalgia. A lot of the options available are a new learning curve, so I hadnt even considered Rites of War. This content has been a life line for me to keep up with current trends. I spoke with my fellow players and told them to secure something that can deal with the Scorpius. Will dial it down during games if it's doing its job too well, but they're happy with me using it (one has threatened drop pods in retaliation) Great advice given, thank you.

Night lords

Definitely want to get a couple for my Fists. Will be interesting to see as more people to start to field them - I do love fielding mass infantry (multiple tactical squads, support squad, and heavy weapon squads).

They are fine. They only feel powerfull because all the other tanks are just meh at best, and as it it this is one of the only counters to lascannon team spam

What are the other counters?

The Scorpius in my experience is a pseudo mobility check for an army. I do have a pair with Death Guard. The times it feels too good is when opponents don't bring something capable of getting back there and harassing it. A Sabre tank trades pretty well with it and is easy to slot into most lists, too bad it's expensive in resin and too new to hope for a plastic release. Armies that might struggle to use a Fast slot for that already have the mobility anyways.

Got myself a Chinese xiphon to deal with them. Works wonders but thats also a model that way undercosted so at times feel guilty using it

Tbh I think it's a combo thing. Being s8 makes ot good vs vehicles and great vs multi wound Elites. Rend 4+ makes it great,pinning is good. Then the durability with ignore LoS. It shouldn't be similar durability to a Sicaran. Which it basically is ( rear armour is lower,thats it). They either need to increase cost 20-30pts and drop a HP or keep same cost and drop to rend 5+ and rhino armour stats. The other issue is how bad the Medusa / Arquitor / basilisk etc is. There is no real situation where they compete and really need a points drop minimum. I also think it's interesting that msny of the new plastic kits are very good for cost. Scorpius, contemptor& Leviathan, predator, the new jetbikes and the sicaran. The Xiphon looks cheap and amazing compared to the other aircraft and the Javellins do compared to other fast gun platforms

The extra hull point over a pred is weird, but lower rear armour really is a big deal when people get into melee, which is far from impossible with different reserves. It's a really good model, but it's not very durable.

@@LeopoldZ If you get into cc with it aye. not the easiest with ignore los tanks that can be hidden away pretty well. It has the same armour as a predator with +1hp or same as a siccy with less rear. it doesnt need that as rhino chassis tank. imo,ofc

@@abbadonslostarms-kbd1393 between deep strike, outflank and some very fast units (move 16 on jetbikes for example), I don't think it's that hard to get to it by turn 2. People seem to rate mobility pretty low, but in situations like this it comes in really handy! It could be a few points extra and lose a hull point, granted, but I don't think anything drastic needs to change with it.

Not usually fast or maneuverable enoigh to get LoS before the damage is done, but certainly better than some options!

@Liam Morgan oh yah, I regularly run 4 of them. Just so easy to pop with light AT weapons that often they get one move at best. It's even more apparent vs fists with bs5 auto weapons etc

Iron warriors ironfire right of war make them nasty as well.

On the one hand, I do respect the design choice on this vehicle’s rules: real world rocket/missile salvo artillery is utterly devastating and the Scorpius fits this trope well. On the other, it is an outlier in the effectiveness-cost scatter chart being underpointed relative to other artillery tanks. It aleo doesn’t suffer from the limitation of those real world systems, that of limited ammunition supply. So one thought would be to give it the Limited Ammunition rule like the Arquitor’s Spicula Battery does, another would be to reduce that rending to 5 or 6+. We will have to see if the introduction of the plastic kit leads to this vehicle receiving a nerf. Cool video, thanks as always.

They seem a little strong. I bought two and the rending on 4 is kinda crazy.

I have 2 of these but I just thought they looked cool … don’t really want them to be overly good . Would rather they are nerfd than just not running them .

A javalin can most of the time kill a scorpius first turn and for the same points. Everything has a Counter inThis game

As an IW player, it feels wrong not to have one in every list over 2k.

Thus far, my Scorpius has missed 80% of its shots. Maybe some day it will feel like the “friend maker” of old.

Nice try but I'm keeping my 2 kratos tanks 🤣
