I've tried a number of razors and the one that gives me a great shave with zero irritation seems to be the Merkur 23C and it may have graduated to number one on my list.

Again great video I’ve been Traditional WetShaving for 10 months now and I always go back to this video. Probably watched it 10 different times! 💈😁✌️💈

My favourite razor is the ATT M2 which has a higher price then the say the Muhle R89 but is suitable for beginners and veterans alike.

Agree. The M1/M2 are great razors. The R1/R2 are great as well, but only for people who like a bit more blade feel out of the razor.

I’m thinking about trying the safety razor again. Watching from Alaska so I’m waiting til summer.

Great video! Personally I think if someone wants one and only safety razor he has to look at the adjustable ones (Futur, Progress , Parker Variant etc ) , because they can become your daily smooth shavers at their low settings or the aggressive razor that someone needs at high settings !

Great tuturial! I have very coarse hair and dry skin. So I always need an aggressive razor. I just switch to the Nacet DE razor in my current Merkur Adjustable. Any recommendations? i have both a twist to open shaver and a closed comb razor and I prefer the twist to open. still trying out different soaps and stuff as I do get razor burn and have sensative skin even when using disposable razors

What is the brand and model of your eyeglasses?

CNC razors will be more exact on how the blade seats in the razor, you generally won’t have to adjust the blade as the gap and blade exposure should be perfect.

I have just started shaving my head recently i got a double edge razor from Walmart and gave it a shot well the experience wasn't so great and i feel that it is because my hair grows super fast and thick the razor i have is a closed comb do u think an open comb would help

I would probably go for an open comb if your hair grows that quickly.

I personally prefer the MUHLE safety razors. Istg they are the best. They are very delicate on the skin and their close comb safety razors don’t expose too much of the blade. I just got my MUHLE Rytmo razor and it works so much better for me than a Gillette Cartridge razor as in tugs my skin a lot and my skin is super sensitive.

Open comb.. generally gives u more blade exposure....

For head shaving, I'd reach for the Blackbird more often. For face shaving, I probably reach for the Hone.

Just thinking about the switch to DE shaving looking at the Edwin Jagger DE89 or for a little bit more money the Rockwell 6C the cheaper version of the 6S what's your opinion

I love the 6S and use it often. I can't recommend it highly enough. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 6C. The DE89 is also very good, but doesn't offer the variety of the 6S/C.

Close comb or open comb DE razor for head shave?

I'm using a viking for head shaving works good in my opinion but have nothing to compare to cos it's my first safety razor lol

We make this so complicated. A Viking Blade Chieftain, a Nacet blade... soap up thoroughly with a decent product and take your time = excellent results

I'm a new head shaver, thinking about trying a safety razor. Currently bought an Omnishaver, but I want a very close daily shave and that's not cutting it. I feel like I'm in research overload land: Edwin Jagger DE8; Vikings Chieftain; MERKUR 34c, 23c, 38c or 37c; Parker 96R... any recommendations for a newbie who wants a close daily shave with as foolproof of a razor as possible in terms of nicks/cuts? With safety razors it seems that's the tradeoff: either you have an aggressive razor, or you have one that's easier but not as close of a shave. Would love your thoughts, thanks for all the videos!

For me, the most foolproof razor for shaving my head is an old Schick Injector. I’d highly recommend one if you can find it.

What are your top 3 razors? I am currently using a Rockwell 6s and am considering picking up an additional razor. What would you recommend? I like the design of the Phoenix symmetry. I am also looking at the Phoenix ascension.

Great question. I'd recommend something on the milder side that you can use every day. Probably a Mühle R89 or Edwin Jagger DE89.

Most modern razors are going to feel a lot more precise than some vintage shavers. BUT, a properly calibrated vintage can shave just as well as a lot of its modern counterparts. The trick with vintage/antiques is that you can't just pick up an old Gillette from an antique store and expect it to shave like new (though you do find some that can). I would advise anyone wanting to have a great-performing vintage to have it checked out by Razor Emporium.

Have you tried the Rockwell 6C and how does it compare to the 6S?

6 S heavier and more pleasant goes on the skin, like a bulldozer. But they remove hair the same way)

Head shaver here who doesn't want to be a blood donor but would like to get into double edge shaving. Not gonna lie, I'm scared to do it.

I have an Edwin Jagger DE89. I know, very standard, but I find it an awesome razor (coming from multi-cartridge). It feels great on the skin, has a nice weight and a beautiful shiny finish. Around 4:40 he says, it is nice to invest into something little more long term. What does it mean? Do Edwin Jagger razors degrade with use? I am taking a really good care of my razor and planning to use it for a long time. Did anyone have any issues with long term?

No, you should be able to hand your DE89 down to your kid and he will hand it down to his kid. 100 years of use should be no problem. Edwin Jagger is well known for their excellent chrome finish process. We ain't talking Chinese here.

I really enjoy your videos. I am a new wet shaver - all because I became a bum!!! I sold a company, became a bum for a year, tyook a trip to China and decided to try and cut the costs of owning a cartridge razor, but not by sacrificing ant quality. So Sandwik makes the blades in Sweden. They are shipped on roles to China and assembled into cartridges. In fact I sell 30 x 5-blade cartridges and the razor for $12 (CAD). Well everything was going well until one day Baily sent me a TTO razor, It was free.Then I decided to try it (sure that I would slice off an ear!!) Noit only did I not slice off my ear, but I got a great shave from just one blade. Noiw I import DE razors to the U.S. and Canada. I have 20 or so. I love each one. They are like friends. Okay, I know. Too corny. What really amazes me is how the same blade can be great in one razor, and suck in another. Wet shaving should be a right and not a privilege. Every man should experience it. As such I have decided to giveaway 1,000 DE razors a month. I have ordered thae merchandise, but it will be a couple pof months before it arrives. I will be doing a give away in March of 30 Baily 181s. I will let you know. And if you want to review the free shaver when I get it. I would love that because every guy should experience the pleasure I get from a good wet shave. Keep up the good work.

It will last you a while. Just clean your tools after every shave. A lot of these options is more about the weight, balance of the handle, color, materials, etc. I have my initial DE handle which cost me $10 and still works great.

What do you think of Vikings blade razors? The Chieftan in particular

Two passes in the same direction may not do that much. If you want to get really close, you'll need to shave in at least two of the directions: with the growth (WTG), across the growth (XTG), or against the growth (ATG).

Going across the grain I barley cut anything against the grain it get everything but bump me up would bamboo preshave help?

It might. I find that with going against the grain, it really depends on HOW you do it. If you're going with absolutely no pressure and being careful in your approach, you really shouldn't have much happen. Proper lathering would be key as well.

What about Rockwell 6C vs 6S?

I don't have any experience with the 6C, so I can't say. My understanding is that the geometry is identical. The only difference may be weight because of different materials used.

I have the ej de89 and I really like it but it takes so many passes when I head shave to get all the hair. I've tried many blades and they all seem to be very similar on my head. On my face it's a different story all the blades react differently. I'm not sure If the razor is to mild for my head it's almost like I wish it would shave way closer on less passes. I don't mind 2 or 3 passes on my face but. If I try long strokes on my head it hardly takes any hair off. It takes more off if I do lots of short strokes ... Would rather be able to do a long stroke and take a lot off you no. Well if anyone more experienced would like to help me out before I switch to another razor and spend more money please help?

Great question. My recommendation would be to start by shaving every 2-3 days on your head. If you're not used to it, oil production from your scalp can cause issues with ingrown hairs and whatnot. Eventually, you work up a rhythm that works for you.

Its horse's for courses it depends what will suit you,d e jagger good razor some like the adjustable type future, parker , muhle ,and budget comes into the equation a razor will shave no matter what, your feeling how that shave is to you relaxes and you feel safe using it.

Do you have the same opinion for razors for a head shave? Vs. a beard/face shave?

Good question. Generally, my opinion holds pretty much the same. The only exception would be that I usually don't go for the 50mm wide single edge blades on my head. I find them to be a waste since only a small portion makes contact with your head at a time.

I am certainly not an expert. I am using the Edwin Jagger I bought 8 years ago. I would think the blade you use can make a razor perform quite differently.

Great Video! Can you explain more about this open comb? I have coarse beard and I shave everyday and it ain't a open comb razor. It takes 4 passes for me to be properly clean.

The open comb may not be the answer. For you a sharper blade might be key. The open comb really just allows longer hairs to pass through to the blade, which is more ideal for people whose beard either grows quickly, or shave less frequently.

That's like asking which of my kids is my favorite. You're right that the Hone Type 15/15a is definitely in the top 3. Others would include the Rockwell 6s and the Blackland Razors Blackbird. Honestly, though, the differences in performance for all of them come down to splitting hairs.

Why does everyone talk about EJ de89 and not the Muhle R89 as a great standard for razors? The de89 is a knock off of the R89. The de89 uses licensed tooling from Muhle. Muhle should be referenced as the standard, it is the original and EJ just makes their own handles?

I notice you didn't mention vintage. Any reason? I agree that a DE89 is an excellent starting razor but since starting a few weeks ago I also got a Gillette ball end tech which I would also recommend as a good starter and very reasonably priced.

An alum block acts as an astringent to remove excess oil from your skin and also soothe any irritation. It stings a bit at first, but really helps in the long run.

A slant razor usually takes some getting used to. I would advise working with a straight bar first and then moving to a slant when you get some experience under your belt.

Why is brass better than stainless steel?

Each has their advantages and disadvantages, actually. Many razors are made of brass. It's soft, which has pros and cons, but generally easier to work with. Brass is also more thermally responsive that stainless. For instance, if you want your razor to stay warm while shaving (adding to the experience), you can let it sit in HOT water while you're lathering and warm up. Stainless will do that too, but won't retain the heat as long. On the other hand, stainless is more durable, tarnish resistant, and is an industry standard. However, because it's harder, it's more difficult to work with and often more expensive to get razors made of stainless (with a few exceptions). Really, it comes down to preference. I have a brass razor that's in my top 3. I also have stainless razors that are at the top of my list. I don't think it really matters what metal it's made of. What matters at the end of the day is its performance for you.

Hi, starlite. I would say it *can* be cheaper to shave with a safety razor. If you're simply in it to save money, then safety razors will be a great fit, though it may cost you a little more up front (depending on what razor model you pick). For shaving legs (as if I'm an expert on that), my recommendation would be to go with whatever feels more comfortable to you, which I think would be a safety razor for most people.

I'm just trying to find a DE shaver with the blade being closer to the bar to minimise nicks and cuts on the skin. You shouldn't need to have half a dozen or more shavers. Maybe two at most with one being a back up. It's becoming a trend and a bit of a fad having all this shaving gear. It's just shaving your skin. It's not a bloody art form. And the prices of some of these DE shavers is just robbery. But I digress this is just my opinion and we are all entitled to them.

.. yeah... I just spent 100usd on a Gillette sensor....( shipping almost gave me a heart attack) because it’s the only razor that works for me now ...but cool vid!

My personal assessment of using a "safety razor." 5 bladed Fusion razor: I let my beard grow out for 4 days, then shaved with a 5 bladed Fusion razor. I experienced zero cuts, no left over hair, the shave was rather quick, safe, close af & uneventful. Single blade "safety razor": I let my beard grow out for 4 days, then I used a Van Der Hagen brand safety razor. I had 7 small cuts, several "scuff marks," the shaving process took approximately 5 times longer to complete, (especially under my nose on upper lip) & I had had several random hairs left over in various areas of my face. That small radial dial at the bottom of the handle that locks the blade mechanism in place came loose 3 times, which could have been a safety factor if I hadn't been aware & careful. The actual closeness of the shave was MUCH less than the 5 blade Fusion shave, & my fucking face hurt afterwards. (yeah yeah yeah I know, "it's killing you too...") Summation: Safety razors were good for our grandfathers & great grandfathers back in their hay-day, as they were the only options available, other than a straight razor which can actually kill you if someone bumps your elbow while shaving. Safety razors are inefficient, cut my face quite often, & are generally a nuisance to use. Any modern 3-4-5 bladed razor will VASTLY out-perform a straight razor in quickness, safety, & closeness of shave...PERIOD! You must use extreme caution when using a safety razor, as you can literally butcher the ever-living FOOOK out of your face if you are not cautious, in a hurry, &/or have utilized meth, crack, acid or any other mood/mind altering substances before endeavoring to commit follicle genocide on your face. Research! Also, applesauce is fruit gravy! (Bear Down)

@@fobbitoperator3620 good for you, but multi-blade razors generally hurt my face, I get more cuts (especially on scars) and they cost more. With a DE razor I have more control, I can still get a nice close shave and I don't cut myself + my skin gets Way less irritated. It does take more time and practice, though. If you get good, it won't take much longer than the 3-5 blade razors.

@@Avdallabill You will get more little nicks and cuts shaving with a safety razor than with a straight razor. The safety is not fewer cuts, it's no deep cuts. Even a single blade BIC disposable is better than a safety razor.

The Garlic Farm I think with proper technique and equipment you will be good to go with either hardware. I daily shave with safety razors and never get nicks or cuts
