Greg, Greg here. Thanks
Awesome video Greg I’m in the works of making a similar video. I personally don’t get ingrowns or irritation with cartridge razors I just have so much more fun wetshaving! I always have a cartridge razor on standby if I don’t have time for a 20 min shave.
The Skinguards were my favorite blades but were done after a second shave for me. Trying to save I went to Amazon a couple weeks ago and the king Gillette razor popped up. Went to KZread and found your review. I am now loving shaving thanks to DE Razors! Got that KG razor but since added two other razors, different blades, soap (omg best thing) and other stuff. What used to be a chore is now something I find relaxing. I'm 40 no less. Feel lied to by the shave industry all these years.
Another great video, as per usual! 😎It was pleasure to watch. 👍🙂

There goes Greg, taking one for the team! The thing that gets me about the "lubrication strip" is that it is behind the blades, thus lubricating what is already shaved. Having said that, a two blade cartridge is a good option for head shaves.
@GregTardif
Жыл бұрын
To be fair, the lube strips are on either side of the blades. It’s a great head shaver I bet. But I’d go leaf if possible but if you can’t travel with blades this would be a good reason

@@GregTardif I had no idea that these ones had double lube strips. I bet you need them if you are shaving with foam.
After a couple of shaves with the Rhodium-coated Konsul, I have to admit how smooth it feels even when compared to an equally-coated '59 Fatboy. Loving the weight in the hand and the amazing grip too!

Interesting comparison today !
The Gillette Atra Plus was my first razor! I feel like I’d be running a risk, but next time I travel and have to fly, I’ll probably just get a pack of disposable razors and do one with-the-grain pass; my face can’t handle much else if it isn’t my 34c. Excellent video! Cheers!

FWIW, I think the Schick Exacta 2 is a very good disposable
Although being an avid wetshaver for several years now, I still absolutely love my Gillette Mach3. I've been using that same Mach3 razor handle and holder for 25 years now. The handle on mine looks like built from a hefty metal, when I grab it in the morning, the outer surface is very cold to the touch. I've done some quick research, the newer ones seem chrome coated plastic, is that true? Should I hold on to my Mach3 handle? The rubber grips on mine have started showing their age, but anyway, it has sentimental value so I'll keep using. After starting wetshaving, I mostly use my Mach3 for the back of my neck etc, time to time. When I put on a new cartridge, I get a few beard shaves for nostalgia's sake. I think after learning wetshaving techniques, with the 3 pass method, with the better and fancier soaps I have now, the shaves with Mach3 are even fancier, more comfortable and more successful than before. I rarely have clogging issues with Mach3 for facial hair (assuming one week's growth at most). Long story short, although I like wetshaving a lot and I do it almost daily, I still like the cartridge razor (Mach3 specifically, cannot talk for others). And if I were to pack for travel w/o checked in bags, I'd be totally comfortable relying on my Mach3 for a week or so. It's not terrible as some wetshavers always keep on claiming and bashing on it.

FWIW, I find the Mach 3 to be too mild, and I absolutely hate the fact that the pivot is on the leading edge, rather than centred over the foils. I think their Sensor Excel is/was superior. (and very good indeed)
In a pinch or for travel that seems like a good option. Good soap and post care makes a big difference too. Safe travels brother.

Hey Greg, what’s goin on?! When I’m traveling I tend to take the Gillette 7 O’clock razor, it’s kinda the spiritual successor to the Trac II. I can’t get passed the pivoting head in a lot of new razors, with a few rare exceptions. Safe travels 👊🏻!

Hey Greg. I just discovered your channel. Thanks for the great thoughts. After watching your "Best of 2022," I am thinking of picking up a Rocnel Elite. I've been shaving with a safety razor for about 6 years, but I've only got one: a Feather AS D2. Thinking of making a change to give Rocnel a try. Two questions for you: (1) Should I wait for a Sailor or is the Elite a good way to put my toe in the Rocnel water? Not sure if it'll be sufficiently different from the Feather, or if I should instead go for a totally different route-- i.e. adjustable (Rocnel Sailor, or perhaps a Rex Consul). For what it's worth, I'll be using it for my daily shave--that's why I was thinking a fixed blade might suit me best. (2) Assuming I go with the Rocnel Elite, any particular blades you recommend for it? To date, all I've used (blade-wise) are Feather Blades. Thanks!

I actually really like the Skin Guard for carryon-able razor. It does not irritate my skin and the blades are spaced so as not to have hysteresis effect. I prefer it on the Parker short metal handle. I buy the carts on deep discount from CVS when they are on sale. Do not overshave with it. Btw, when traveling try Cremo you can use brushless or with a brush. Can also use hair conditioner. Try it sometime with open mind. Btw #2 my second favorite travel razor is a Gillette Atra vintage aluminum handle with Gillette carts from Europe where they’re called Contour. And actually you can use a NOS Schick Type L with Supply Black Label blade loaded. With just one blade loaded it passes through TSA just fine. Check out Sig Solo as I gifted one to him to try and he agreed!

I’m no fan of cartridge razors, but when I have to travel, I don’t want to deal with checking bags or having to worry about my expensive DE razor being lost or stolen. Check out the Defender razor. It’s a better shave than any Gillette and cheaper too.

@@GregTardif 👍. I have actually heard of at least 2 instances where TSA has confiscated DE razors even though they didn’t have a blade in them! Strange, right? As we all know your stuff can get inspected in checked baggage and it isn’t unheard of to have stuff mysteriously disappear too, which is exactly why I will never bring a DE razor with me when I travel. Just not worth the hassle or losing an expensive Razor IMO.
Great video Greg! I currently have 3 safety razors. The merkur 34 c, Edwin jagger de89 and Gillette heritage. I’ve come to realize mild razors work better for me. More aggressive razors tear my face up. What are some other mild razors you suggest I try?

And costwise the 6S should be no problem, if the AS-D2 and the 3One6 are on the table already. 😆 Also the quality of the S is way better than the C (in my opinion). Hope nobody notices I'm a fanboy. 😉 Maybe a Henson could be an alternative also.

If the 6S is equivalent to the 6C in terms of mildness, then ABSOLUTELY it can go extremely mild. I had the 6C for a while - the #1 plate was so mild that it didn't really do anything at all, IMHO. #2 was still very mild, and as a bi-daily shaver, is what I used to do most of the work. (I'd flip it over to #4 for a final ATG pass just on my cheeks). Exchanged it for the T2, which unfortunately can't go quite as mild - I'd place the T2 #1 setting at about the 6C's #2.5 - 3.
Great one, buddy. Yeah... could be a choice for a carry-on, but as you say. But for the results and cost, I would buy a pack of DE blades on my destination and go with it.

A buddy of mine uses it for head shaves too
I haven't flown in a few years, but in the past I just used a plastic disposable with regular soap with no aftershave. That's how my dad shaved ever since I was a kid. I had lots of days where I was running late for work, and I dry shaved while driving with a disposable I kept in the car that I probably should have gotten a tetanus shot before using. A cartridge would be a step up! Wet shaving is more of a luxury for me than solving a skin problem. It's crazy to think about this, but my first flight had a smoking section, and there was a slot in the tiny bathroom for used razor blades. There isn't much room in there, but they thought changing blades while flying was so common that they used valuable space to dispose of them.
@GregTardif
Жыл бұрын
Dang! I didn’t realize how old you are 😂😂 kidding aside. We’re in a different world but I feel like 5 blade cartridge razors would end up doing more damage than a double edge blade

Seinfeld mentioned those slots in one of his stand-up routines - "who's USING UP blades on the flight?!?!"
If I was traveling and couldn't check a bag, I'd have to go with BIC Metal disposables. Single blade, metal safety guard, and cheap. About $12 for a box of 30 on Amazon. And they work fairly well. Use them just like a de razor. Couple of passes and you're good. Minimal irritation - if any.

Those do look good. Thanks Chris
As a slightly different example than the video's title, I rechecked a pricing for Gillette Sensor Excel Cartridges in a 30-count package; an Amazon price is $32.60. Another Amazon listing for this cartridge is a 10-count pack for $24.70. Just the price of either of those cartridge packages is the price of some GOOD, NEW, double edge razors. That gives an idea, why I have not purchased cartridges for the very old Sensor Excel handle here.

I would go with a BIC single blade disposable over those multi-blade contraptions. And yes Greg, you CAN compare a $20 cartridge razor to a $300 safety razor. In fact, you could compare it to a banana or anything else. It wouldn't be logical, but it's possible.

@@GregTardif Things get a little confusing when you compare razors to fruit when 21 out of 29 (72.41%) of your soaps smell like fruit. Is it the razor that reminds me of a banana or my banana soap that's got me thinking my razor might be the cause of the banana-y shave? It just makes me wonder how many of my razors might actually be a cookie or mint.
Try OneBlade Hybrid or Genesis.
