The pronunciation stems from it being a long word that needed to be said by a large number of uneducated sailors and communicated quickly. You can, however, pronounce it as you'd expect it to be pronounced and you wouldn't technically be wrong.

Nautical terms are really strange. When you had ships sailing around the world and picking up crew members that spoke different languages and each had their own name for things, it was confusing. Often new words were created by mashing up words from different languages. In this case, it seems like English and French. "c. 1400 (mid-14c. as Anglo-French forechasteil), "short raised deck in the fore part of the ship used in warfare," from Middle English fore- "before" + Anglo-French castel "fortified tower" (see castle (n.)). In broader reference to the part of a vessel forward of the fore rigging, late 15c.; hence, generally, "section of a ship where the sailors live" (by 1840). Spelling fo'c'sle reflects sailors' pronunciation. If at the aft part of a ship, it was an afcastle."

In "aisle" there is the sound "A". Same for Djabouti, there is a "D" sound. English only have letters for what is called a diphtongued vowel and fricative consonant. Those letters actually express two sounds. In "u" there is the sound "ee" and the sound "oo."

That's not true, everyone i've ever known has pronounced Aisle the same as Isle, despite the latter not having any A at all. Both Aisle and Isle are pronounced the exact same way, at least in America (i'd assume the UK as well) meaning the A is never pronounced in Aisle. Also, S is silent is both Aisle and Isle as well. Come to think of it, the only 2 letters that ARE pronounced in Aisle are I and L, if we're being technical. The best way to think of the English Language imo, is like Fight Club... the only rule is there are no rules. The English Language is just lawless, really.

The fun part is that most "silent" letters were originally pronounced. We just got lazy with out mouths and started slurring the sounds together to the point where certain letters got glossed over or cut out altogether because it had better or faster mouth feel.

That's only sometimes! occasionally, such as the word Castle, they were just injected by French Scholars who assumed that it had something to do with a Latin root that it actually didn't. And yes, the FRENCH were responsible for a ton of awful things in our language, because spelling used to be pretty phonetic and they didn't like that at all.

  • @Mercure250

@@DembaiVT Actually, "castle" does come from the Latin "castellum", and the "t" is still pronounced in French to this day (it's the "s" that stopped being pronounced in French, and for once, we don't even write it anymore : château). You can blame the French for some things, but not this one! I'd say "debt" would be a better example. Also, it's not so much that they made mistakes about the Latin root, but rather, these letters didn't exist in the common language anymore, but they decided to bring them back. There are reasons for that, one of which being that only scholars who knew Latin knew how to write, but it has nothing to do with mistakes. There are cases of letters that, from a purely etymological perspective, shouldn't have been there, but were introduced as a way to link related words together in a more visible way. The real issue is that, now, we are stuck with decisions that more or less made sense at the time, but don't anymore, and for some reason, we haven't changed things since then. Well, we have in some cases, just not all cases.
