I've worked with an English colleague, and he always thought that 'basterdsuiker' was the funniest Dutch word.

Achterstevoren. The word achter is at the beginning of the word and voren is at the end. The word is a description of its meaning.

There is a linguistic word for that. I forgot it, I bet it is Latin, but we can always search and find it. Short is short. Complicated is pretty complicated. Simple is a simple word. Long however is short!

"Uitbuiken" is my fave

How close Bazooka is to Bezoeker kinda makes me laugh.... knock knock - who's there - bezoeker........ I used to wonder if they shared an etymology (they dont, bazooka has a completely separate Dutch root).

Why didn't you buy a telescope? Tele is verre and scope is kijker. Why did telescope and binoculars drift apart? They do exactly the same!
Many, but "Nietjes" for staples gave everybody in class a laugh.

Bromfiets is my favourite word. It sounds what it is: "Brom brom fiiets" and there you are, back home again.
The one word that I have a very big love-hate relationship with is schildpad. I love how it sounds but if isis captured me and said “say the word “turtle” in Dutch or we will unalive you” I would tell them to tell my family I love them 😭

Farlooker would be a great English word
Dat een stokstaartje iemand is die rechtop om zich heen staat te kijken op een strand of zo had ik nooit van gehoord. Dacht dat het om een potloodventer ging. ^^
Yes, let me get my farlooker to check out these birds.....that's not gonna go down well🤣

ik vind heet interessant om te weten wat buitenlandse mensen van onze taal vinden. mooie video!!
If you think betuttelen is cute, then 'tuttel' (a word for a cuddle-cloth for a kid) is also cute.

Verrekijker. Hmm. How about telescope? That is literally the same word. However, verrekijker is indeed the Dutch word for binoculars.
@wazzlepazzle

It is called a binocular, because it has two 'eyes' as in two telescopes. If it has only one handheld refraction telescope, it is called a 'Monocular'. In Dutch, a binocula(i)r is actually a microscope.

@@wazzlepazzle Yes. It is grappig how a lot of words have a different twist in several languages. Car, Wagen, voiture, auto, bil. Bil is short for automobile, in case you had no clue. Lots of such weird cases, indeed.
