In Bulgaria, we still use it as a slang word for "condom", though the "o" goes a bit to the "u" sound as in German.

It has the same origin. Capote in French and Spanish means coat made of capok fibres. The cap is latin for head. It used to be a tight hat for women.😂

And the French used to call the condom also an "English Raincoat" when the English called it French Rubber. If you ever owned/wore an English trench (rain) coat with a rubber layer on the inside - looks very handsome and may have straps to tie the left and right bottom to your legs for riding horse - then you'll know these raincoats are so water proof that no water/moist comes out. Back to the condom, imagine when it springs a leak when in full action, what do you say. Apparently "kapot". But that may all be history as Google Translate only knows that French capote means condom in English and so historical has become hysterical

You know I'm so surprised to hear that in Philippine they have the same word I'm Berber it's a language in North Africa and we also say Kapot (kbod) for raincoat.

When I was studying Dutch at college, my late docent almost always barely managed to burst into laughter when he had to say, "Open de pagina .... " which actually instructed us to open a particular page on our book. Of course, we the students, cannot hold at all. Rest in peace, meneer.

If you think the word 'sectie' (section) is fun. We sometimes have a section for a specifc profession, its called a 'vaksectie'.

One of my Irish friends laughed to tears over the word 'bouwvakker' once...

"Hoor" (hear), which sounds exactly the same as "whore" (English), and it's specially funny when you hear someone respond to someone else with "Ja hoor" or "ik hoor je". "Koe" (cow), which sounds like "cu" (Portuguese), meaning anus (not in a classy or scientific way) in Brazil, or ass in Portugal.

When somebody (especially when they are not pronouncing it too well) uses the English word "cut" it does sound like the Dutch word "kut" (slang term for a vagina in Dutch). I had to laugh when I read the English version of Elfquest as a troll named "Picknose" was called "Picky" by his wife (Oddbit), as it's pronounced exactly the same as "Pikkie" ("little penis" in Dutch. Also a slang term). And the fact that the two trolls were at that moment also "creating a kid" didn't help, either. 🤣

I heard once the person saying koe and I laughed a lot, as a Portuguese speaker (Brazilian) and now learning Dutch I see so many words that sound funny too.

Well, to me as a native Dutch speaker the words "sectie" and "sexy" also sound the same, and it's basically rather because of the context in which the words are used that I don't get confused.

I work for the dutch railways and sometimes there are problems(storing) with a section (sectie), which are used for train-collision-prevention. So that is a "sectie-storing" My none dutch girlfriend find that so funny.

As a german speaker I find "te gek" funny, because "gek" means "raar" and "te gek" is a kind of the opposite. It means "super". Als je een fout makt en "te gek" zegt en niet "gek", ...

I like pech. In polish it means bad luck. In dutch - broken car during a ride... well. bad luck indeed.

The Dutch words that I find hilarious are swaffelen (to slap the male appendage against something}, snurken (to snore} and ontploffen (to explode). I also find it amusing how some Dutch words are a literal description, such as naakteslag (naked snail), which is a slug.

In the usa they like dutch 'stroopwafels' too. They sometimes call them swaffles, hahaha. Dutch might wonder what Americans do in 'The S'Waffle Shack', when they visit Charleston and see 'The S'Wafffle Shack - You Know You Want A S' Waffle'🤣

How about this connection with German, Dutch and English. The German word "Wie" (how) is "hoe" in Dutch, which is exactly pronounced the same as the English word "Who", but now it comes the Dutch word for "Who" is "Wie".

Funny how in Russian it would mean little fart, because scheetje or poepescheetje (little fart or little poopiefart) is also a commonly used term, but a term for endearment.

Well there is the word Ledikant. which means bed or krib . you say that word in an english speaking country they will raise some eye brows . Or a Hor an old fashioned decorative laced frame that people used to have behind their windows or a Hor infront of a door or window to keep the musquitos outside well you say you got a Hor in the window or doorway. people will look funny at you as well .

I could help these guys a lot as a German speaker, you Tagalog ladies, kaputt and Kapuze are proper German words my Dutch neighbors just polished pronunciation and spelling a bit. Your Tagalog word capote is for sure from your Spanish invaders. I also like Winkel, which means a little corner. With the largest roofed building in the world, the Nederlands flower auction, poor little Winkel has seen quite some inflation over the centuries. Burger is Buerger in German, ok, I understand the MacDonalds eater's association. Too bad there is no German student reporting. I am not even beginner level Dutch but by far the funniest (if you are >18) is klar kommen. Very docile proper meaning in German with identical spelling, but don't overdo it when in the Nederlands.

When we (with my Russian speaking Girlfriend) were in Gent (Belgium) we saw a shop for sandwiches called Panos (which means diarrhea in Russian). Also Dikkie Dik (a dutch cartoon cat) brings out laughs.

Ongetwijfeld zo veel variaties van klemtoon van alle nationaliteiten! Toch de Nederlandse taal is zeer moelijk om goed te kunnen spreken vanwege zijn 18 verschillende klinken! Wij moeten veel veel oefeningen doen en fouten maken voordat wij kunnen beetje fatsoenlijk verstandig zijn!!!!
