might have been near a busy street.. recently i've gotten chinese takeout and i literally had to ask the chinese lady at the counter to repeat herself like 5 times because of the loud blaring sound of the road outside even though her dutch was clear to me.. i just had a hard time hearing what she was saying thanks to the fact that my ear hones into the loudest sound there is in the area.. and softer sounds will just be drowned out

My Indian colleague once looked up the status of his PostNL parcel on their website using google translate. It said "status: Bezorgd" and after translating he was very worried about his parcel😂 ("bezorgd" has a double meaning and can also mean "delivered", but google translate isn't aware of that)

They said: "de klanten en het personeel zijn bezorgd, maar de post is dat niet" (the costumers and the stuff is worrying (bezorgd), but the post is it not (delivered: also 'bezorgd').

Even as a Dutch person I sometimes come across these weird sayings that I've never heard of. Someone told me: "Hey, if X and Y wonder where I am, tell them that that I've been 'aangereden'." Which roughly translates to "I've been run over" or "I've been hit by a car" and I was so confused. And when X and Y asked me where he was I repeated him exactly as he told me. He was 'aangereden' and they just understood and nodded. Later I discovered it simply meant that he already left.

Dutch grammar is a bitch sometimes :') "Weet ik veel?" Is a question implying you don't even know how much you don't know, where-as "Ik weet veel." is a statement claiming you do know a lot. All with the swap of 2 simple words the entire spirit of the phrase changes :p Additionally, interpunction can be absolutely crucial in some cases. My grandfather always showed me with a sentence showing how important the placement of a comma can be: Deze man deugt niet, ter dood veroordelen. (This man is no good, sentence him to death.) Deze man deugt, niet ter dood veroordelen. (This man is good, don't sentence him to death.) This way he always told me how the simple placement of a comma could quite literally be the difference between life and death. Never forgot that example :')

I'm surprised you don't provide the actual words and translations on screen in your videos, given that your channel is aimed at language learners. If your interviewees don't say on camera what the dutch phrases they are using (or confusing) and what they mean in English (or another language), then it is impossible for anyone who is only beginning to learn Dutch to understand. Also, there are many people who are interested in Dutch but haven't actually started learning it. My interest, for example, comes from knowing three other Germanic languages (including English) which has meant that I can sometimes pick up the meaning of Dutch words and sentences because of shared vocabulary and familiar grammar (to Hoch Deutsch in particular). Sadly, most of this video and others like it are not understandable to me because it focuses on the nuances of the language which learners have come to understand - but they don't actually explain it.
