I've had good experiences with The Knight Shop in the UK. They have a decent selection of low to mid priced stuff and are quite a bit cheaper than other EU stores . Granted, shipping to Germany is more expensive than say, from battlemerchant, but not by _that_ much (swords that are around 330€ from BM are around 250 from TKS)

@@Hermenie I mean...some of them actually do. Some of them are even competent. Its also...usually...not...cheap that way unless you're personal friends, and quality there can vary a huge amount. Some are really good though, too. Honestly quality there will literally range from incredibly good to utterly trash, depending on how good your local guy is. A lot of them though are really good at knives or farrier work, but simply don't have experience with swords. There just isn't enough demand for them comparably. I know quite a few smiths there tend towards the overweight, overbuilt tendency because they simply don't have the references and they'd rather avoid being known for having their work fail on a user. Admittedly that's my personal experience with some of them, and probably an overbroad generalization, also smiths outside the U.S. may have different demands if the hunting community may be smaller and so calling for less knives.

Most of my Swords are for training purposes. I got Federschwerts from Regenyej, Blackfencer, Szymon Chlebowski and one unusual one from JINO, my eldest in use. They all got their pros and cons. "Real" Swords I own are from Victor Berbekucz or just from an unknown source, just bought on a medieval fair or market. Nowadays it should be easy to have access to good quality without buying crap, though even a price above 300-400€ might leave you with something totally disappointing. So it is important, at least it was for me, to try out your luck and don't buy the first cheap looking think you see.

A long video on 19th century swords and now, two videos in one day, it seems that you're feeling generous today, Matt. I have a few questions( actually I already posted them in a comment on your previous video, but I can't find it so idk whether yt is toying with me so I'm asking again, sorry if this is annoying) Most of the victorian era claymores I see seem to have only 1 inch wide blades, which to me seems to make them kind of the worst of all worlds. The blades feel like they're too narrow to be very good for cutting, especially since they're more hilt heavy than the sabers; and too flexible to thrust well. The swords you show, on the other hand, look like they're 1.125 or 1.25 inches, and are stiffer, which I would imagine makes them much better fighting swords. Was it uncommon for the 1828 pattern claymores to be wide or is it more of a time period kind of thing( or maybe I haven't looked at enough swords and am wrong)? Also, do we have any info on the King-Harman sword? He himself ostentatiously boasted over the non regulation sword he designed for himself and said that the Wilkinson company was very much impressed by it, with rumors being that the 1892 pattern blade was insipired by his sword. Yet, if I'm not mistaken, all we have are a photograph and a sketch to go by, and in both, the sword seems very unimpressive, with just a knucklebow for hand protection. Do you think that he had his sword rehilted with a real hilt and was bragging about that( although even then the sword just looks like a small sword-ish weapon rather than a new ingenious design)? Regarding the 1853 pattern Royal Engineers' sword, it appears as if it was a lot more common for them to be steel hilted and gilded to fit regulation compared to the infantry officers' swords. Could this have been linked to the fact that the original scinde irregular cavalry swords had steel hilts or were they just more concerned with getting good swords? I heard that officers serving in India had a tendency of getting steel scinde pattern hilts, so do you think that it may have had something to do with Indian service? Btw, why did the British army go to such lengths to get a new hilt for infantry officers' swords in the 1890s when they could just give them the scinde pattern hilt or the honey suckle hilt( which I would imagine are just as just as protective, especially with a liner)? On a final note, I heard that the 1895 and '97 pattern hilts are a bit lighter than the previous brass hilts. Is that true, considering they have a lot more coverage than the brass hilts, and how do the honey suckle/ladder hilt and the scinde pattern hilt compare to that? Cheers!

Most of time all I find is display stuff only with no carbon blades and or unsharpened blades. I would like a Lochaber axe that the Jacobites used a really unique tool. But can’t find a real one unfortunately. You could go down the blacksmith route but it will cost a heck of a lot. Another thing with when it comes to poke Arms, you can buy the heads of halberds and spears for example but comes with no shaft? Any advice there? And if you buy a totally blunt tool with a carbon blade, what’s the best way to sharpen it? (Saw a nice halberd axe head but it’s totally blunt, and it’s shape looks really difficult to sharpen.) And the issue with some sites is they don’t tell you what the maker is. Any help much appreciated.

I buy long-knives and short-swords or a fusion of the 2 when I'm looking to buy a sword or something like it, I prefer a fighting blade to be not too long and not too short for practical reasons. Longer blades won't work well in tight spaces. There are 2 blades I have in my collection for short-sword purposes #1 is my Columbian Smatchet #2 is new to my collection and that's my Honshu Boshin Toothpick knife and greetings from America.

Ebay has sword sellers and some makers storefronts. Use words in your search to avoid flimsy decor, "Tempered" and "battle ready" and it starts with a lot of layer forged katanas, in price ranges well below historically. Cold Steel swords are there a lot too. Some of them are very functional. I have a of their Smallswords and arming swords. HanBon Forge makes quality cane swords, with LK Chen type blades. .

Ebay tends to be a very rare place to find high quality blades unless an owner is selling off his collection. "Albion" or "Lutel" are good keywords. "Tempered" usually will pop up katanas as you said or heavy thick non-practical swords. Cold steel is one of those companies with quality controls that are all over the map depending on the sword/dagger and what kind of finish you are going for.. blackened or polished has a very different pinning and blade quality.

There are a lot of good mid-range swords available now. Though you will never regret buying an Albion, and you can sell them for as much as you buy them for. There are also some very good swords at lower prices, but you need to do more research to sort the good from the bad. Check out reviews on trusted channels and forums.

My strong recommendation is that you never buy a cheap sword - not only are they often not even real swords, they can be dangerous to use even without performing cutting. You're also more likely to be scammed. If you would like to get swords, it's almost always better to save up to buy one pretty nice sword than it is to get a few cheap swords. After all, if you get bad swords, eventually you're going to want nicer ones, and then the old bad one's wasted. But if you save up and buy something quite good, it will be a permanent part of any collection. If you are paying less than $250-$300 US for a sword, it's mostly likely bad or a scam. Solid, dependable swords start at around $400, though you can get cheaper if you don't mind doing thorough research. More complex and better quality swords start to show up at around $500-$600, and at that price you should be getting a well-made and aesthetically good sword that will last a lifetime with sensible use. The high-end swords start at about $1000, but of course that's far too much money for most people and you can get swords that are mostly as good for much less - if you buy a sword at this price point and it is less than excellent quality, you have every right to demand a remedy.

I would love to have a sword or two. But I have no experience with them, and more importantly, my pre-teen kids have no experience with them. I've seen the way they nonchalantly run through my house with baseball bats, and the thought of having a sword hanging within easy reach of curious fingers is a bit scary. I can't afford a new TV, LOL. Learning proper sword handling and care sounds fantastic, but joining a HEMA club is prohibitively expensive.
