    Actually the last one is what I thought of first, but that's because I live in a hot sunny country, and cars can be annoyingly reflective, and they aren't even mirror finish..

    I'd be interested to see mirror armours effect at range. Reflecting the immediate environment, turning legs green as grass, the torso reflecting the sky etc I doubt it would be much use against arrows fired en masse but does it break up the outline somehow?

    Until the guy starts attacking the hand. Only attack the hand and the rapier will be fine. Rapier guy was playing the body too much.

    As an.American.in a constitutional carry state I have carried a handgun all my life. I am.a farmer and often have to deal.with predators. In my youth I had a very close friend who was the president of a 1% mc club and I spent time with.them. They shared your opions in large share about knives. My friend told me even if you win a knife fight you are likely to be hurt. He even told me as a last resort one could take a blade in a hand and have a split second to take care of bussiness. Give me a good old colt 1911 any day.

    Maybe at that time they didn't have a deep knowledge of probability calculations and statistics, but they experienced it directly in the field. A 1% more chance of not being impaled and not dying on the battlefield.......... I'll take it, if I can afford it.

    A slight tangent to this video, but Matt mentions the extra cost in time and resources when producing a double edged blade. With that in mind, why was it that many swords that only have one usable cutting edge are fitted with double edged blades? I'm thinking of basket hilts in particular, which often had a back edge.

  • @wwm84
    @wwm8421 сағат бұрын

    On point #5, you don't even need a mirror polish to accomplish this. Whenever fencing outside, I'd almost rather have my face to the sun if I'm fighting someone with an unpainted steel mesh mask, because if they're facing the sun, it's like staring into a laser beam when you look at them. So yeah, I'll take the "disadvantage" of facing the sun because the sun is in a fixed location in the sky and I can easily avoid staring at it.

    The main attraction for me for friction held heads for an axe as a tool (e.g. tomahawk) is the ease of replacing the handle if it becomes damaged when away from a work shop. I wonder if ancient folks on campaign felt similarly about weapons consteucted that way.

    Armor normally has padding under it, which insulates, making it hot. White armor would reflect all wavelengths. Polished armor would reflect visible light, but would absorb infrared light more than white. I think a mirror polished shield would be an interesting tool.

    Normans didn’t even make up the majority of the invading army lol, Duke William had volunteers and mercenaries from all over northwestern France: Bretons, Poitevins, Flemings, Manceaux (men from Maine) etc, not to mention on the Bayeux tapestry Williams troops (including the Normans) are referred to as “Franci”

    As an American I can tell you that there is an association of the British and British army with the confederate army during our Civil War. The confederates desperately tried to secure military aid from the British, and definitely did receive shipments of British weapons. Maybe these British stamped blades were considered confederate because of that

    How many layers of identification could happen? Like the retinue of a knight wears his colours, but the knight is also sworn to a lower lord who himself follows a king. Did something like that often happen, where they said: "Oh, we need something to show that we are part of this even larger group"?

    The "Bohemian Earspoon," or "ušatá sudlice" in Czech, probably got its name from the triangular out-turned lugs sticking out from the shaft or spearhead, which look like ears. The word "sudlice" doesn't mean "spoon" in Czech and proto-Slavic. In medieval times the Czech word "sudlice" meant "voulge." The original meaning of the Slavic root is "shover" or "thruster." which an etymological dictionary traces to Sanskrit, where "śūlā" means "iron spike." The word is very similar in all Slavic languages today (though only the Czechs and Slovaks add the "d" to "sulice)," including Old Church Slavonic. So the root probably dates way back to Proto-Indo-European. It was probably the Germans who came up with the "spoon" part since they were the ones who called the weapon a "Böhmischer Ohrlöffel" (Knebelspiess is an alternative name in Wikipedia). In medieval German, the expression “den Löffel abgeben” (handing back the spoon) was a euphemism for dying. In that sense, Ohrlöffel can be translated as "eared killer."

    White actually reflects heat better than a mirrored finish, so if you're trying to stay cool, a bright white would be best, and would still be very blinding to your opponent. Darker colors have higher emissivity, but they're also going to absorb more heat. So at night, or in shade, dark armor would radiate your body heat quicker than mirror or white finished steel. However, that might not actually be a bonus, unless you live where it's very hot at night, otherwise you might get cold.

    "Size doesn't matter, certainly not above 3 inches" I'd rather you had said : "Above 3 inches size doesn't matter" as it would have been more accurate. If you feel different, I'd love to see you try stab someone with a 1 mm long knife, i bet it makes a whole lot of difference compared to a 3 inch knife. Also the title would have been less clickbait if you had added the "above 3 inches" in between 'size' and 'does'. That fact that you even mention this 3 inches treshold clearly demonstrates that size does matters a lot. It merely stops to matter once you have 3 inches or longer already.
