Which type of katana is best for stabbing the tip of the sword ?
It's a beautiful thing when someone is this in tune with their cultural heritage.
This was amazing, but Shogo you mention that they can ship it to over seas but it had to have a letter signed saying it wasn’t of important cultural property. What defines important cultural property with swords and why can’t a foreigner purchase such a sword. (I can guess but I’d rather ask so I’m not mistaken)
@ShinElton
Жыл бұрын
A sword of important cultural property is one that has been evaluated by the NBTHK (Japanese Sword Preservation Association) as Juyo Bunkazai (important cultural property) or above. There are swords evaluated at less (4 main levels - Hozon, Tokubetsu Hozon, Juyo, Tokubetsu Juyo) that can be shipped abroad. The Tokubetsu Juyo often include swords of historical significance already and can reach 50k+ USD.

Is more for the reason swords that are part of the history of Japan don't get sold abroad.
@smallfish01
Жыл бұрын
Does your country allow to sell your national tressures to foreigners? Same logic applied here. But hey, if you have some sources, you can buy important cultural property thru Blk Market or thru some not so legal way😄😄

So even if you went online with tozando you can't get it shipped to you? When I was on their site it said something about filling out some form before I could buy their katanas so I just ordered some iaido stuff
@LetsaskShogo
Жыл бұрын
Everyone has already given you the correct answer, it’s just simply to prevent any national treasures to accidentally go overseas! However such treasures would usually not be sold at an affordable price at a regular katana shop, so 99% of the time you will be able to buy the katana you want😊 It’s just to double check!
This was incredible, I had no idea there could be so much selection and history behind the Katana and how it was made. It reminds me of when I had my first pointe shoe fitting and being so excited and trying on many shoes. Thank you for showing your experience to us.

I don't know much about swords but just seeing one versed in it totally geeking out in excitement made me happy. I love seeing people achieve their goals and live their dreams. I bet for a training swordsman, holding such beautiful delicacies was a real treat.
Thank you for sharing this experience.
Thanks for your video. Beautiful shop:)

I knew you were going to choose the 5th katana. The way you were looking at it was like a kid in a candy store!!! 🤭

Thank you very much for the interesting and informative videos! Katanas are beautiful, you can admire them forever! 🤩🔥🔥🔥
This is soo cool Shogo❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nice to see they still have the original Yari (Spears) on top of the display cabinet as seen at 2:14.
Really looking forward to being able to visit you, and possibly even trying some tameshigiri. Keep us updated!
Watching your excitement and appreciation really made me smile
Listening to you "talk" to the katana brought a smile to my face. 理解します

Absolutely incredible quality swords. Fun and exciting review.
I got the opportunity to go here this June, it was beautiful and very cool and I was able to get my own gi, hakama, obi and katana cleaning kit. I highly recommend if you love Japanese martial arts
Those are beautiful Katana. I love that Tachi you held. Gorgeous. I've got some Demons whose bones need to turn to ash. That Tachi will do nicely. Maybe he could make one in a Frost theme. I am the originator of the Frost Breathing technique. I am perfecting the first two forms.
It's wonderful seeing you smile about the sword so much :)
Amazing video! that is a beautiful Sword!
The look on your face right after that first cut says it all. Great video. I could spend all day in Tozando just drooling over the collection.
So interesting. The cuts are so incredibly clean. What a beautiful weapon.

That was really cool, I would love to visit there.
I just got a long katana made by Hitachi no kuni ju - Yoshihiro saku kore in a very high class Edo koshirae. The blade is very wide but very heavy for a more modern blade. I'm so glad you gave us another look at this store and which katana you favour.
Wow!so amazing...the way they swing the katana and cut the mat is effortless.
Shogo, That Katana looks absolutely beautiful. And if you had not bought it. I would have considered buying it. Many happy memories with a wonderful sword.
Those are some beautiful pieces of art in that shop . I'm planning a trip to Japan when I have the chance and would like to see that shop in person. I really like your videos please keep them coming.

I really appreciate you making these video that share your culture and experience. Thank you. 🙏
I love these type of videos because it gives you the perfect idea of what the process of buying a real katana is like.(I fell in love with the fifth katana). (This coment is unrelated with the video but i would love to see shogo react to one of these movies: Yojimbo and/or harakiri)
Congratulations on your new purchase!
Congratulations on the purchase of such an amazing katana. It seems to have a wonderful new home.

Looking to get my first katana. Thanks for this video
I love the katana on rurouni Kenshin, the one that had a tilted handle, reminds me of Count Dooku lightsaber
Happy for you. Nice sword.
So cool 🤩
It's a little funny that the bag for the Katana looks so similar to a gig bag for a guitar. Apart from the shape, of course. Congrats on your superb purchase.
Beautiful
I love the tsuba of this katana!
If you noticed, the store clerk handed the katana to its owner with the cut side towards himself, thus showing respect and trust projected on the recipient. This is the proper way to handover a katana
His is soooooo amazing experience !!
Your video series have inspired me to shop for a Katana! I've practiced Kendo for 10 years and Iaido for 7 years in the Silicon Valley area. Time for the real thing! I've been to Tozando/Kyoto in 2018 and hope to go back someday soon.

Do you have any sort of shinken experience? If not DO NOT buy a nihonto for your first if you plan on doing alot of cutting. Buy yourself a modern replica made with higher grade steels and get away from folding and lamination but make sure it has a hamon. Walter Sorrell. Howard Clark Rick Barrett Josiah boomershine. Or some of the practictioners higher grade stuff like motohara. Nihonto are very delicate in some Cases. And you'll get attached to you first sword. Buy a beater modern steel blade. And then get a nihonto for practicing kata and such and occasionally cutting. They're alot more expensive to maintain as you have to send them back to Japan for sharpening.
Very Cool!

Very interesting video, thank you Shogo. I have visited the shop in 2013 and it truly is amazing. As I am a fellow swordsman (European blades though) I really love your sword and martial arts related videos. I now wonder, what the "real" in real katana means? Does it signify it being sharp or ist it something different? Initially I thought it being a historical blade, but that obviously is not the full truth... I hope to come back to Kyoto soon, as it is an amazing city. Keep up the great work!
@xanderchia7247
Жыл бұрын
I think “real” might have a different meaning for different people. Some might refer to a sharp and functional katana as real, while wallhangers and iaito are not. Others might refer to katana made using traditional methods as “real”, and not whether it is functional. The latter collectors refer to as “nihonto”.
@Michael_Lammer

By “real” in this video, I mean that it’s sharp and not a zinc alloy sword for training! The ones that are sold on the first floor of the shop are dull for safety 😊
