UC Davis Aquaculture visits the Bodega Bay Oyster Company Floating Upweller System (FLUPSY). A shipment of pacific oyster spat has arrived from an oyster hatchery in Hawaii. Ever wanted to know what is oyster spat or where oysters come from? In this video we will watch as the oyster seed is unboxed and placed in the FLUPSY. We will discuss what is cultch and cultchless spat. Oyster farming in California aquaculture is similar yet different from oyster aquaculture that occurs in other US aquaculture operations. California shellfish aquaculture farmers do not practice much on bottom aquaculture instead most is farmed off bottom.
