Technically speaking, Rick in fact didn't do it. Morty wanted something to save his place in time, not send him to a very similar dimension

@darthimperious1594 Rick says he doesn't do time travel, but he literally did exactly that in the snake planet episode. Rick does time travel. He just refuses to admit he does because the writers hate time travel stories, and so by proxy, he hates it. They'll only write about time travel to make fun of it. Ironically, they hate time travel stories because it "removes all stakes," but they literally had the super advanced dinosaurs say that they don't do multiverse travel for pretty much the same reason.

Rick can do is "Stop Time", and that still took effort to make it sensible at best. @Dracopyre321 makes a points from looking at the events of any form of time movement and displacement in Rick and Morty. It would take a massive amount of energy and materials he may not have on hand to build for Morty to use. Heck, it might just outright kill him if Morty was not careful. Even if Rick could have incorporated the technology of the time collar, paradoxes would be a key issue that could destroy the fabric of the universe, possibly faster than Rick is able to escape through with the portal gun. Anything with a "displacement" of a "person" in "time" is a major no.

Even though Rick is kinda being an A-hole about it he's completely right here about Morty not caring about the work that actually goes into making an idea happen. Rick makes it very clear to Morty that he doesn't do time travel. But Morty in a very childlike manner doesn't care how the device is made and just wants the end result. Logically that means the only other way to make Morty's idea work is with dimension-hopping. Something Morty never considers the consequences for. So this is actually a rare example of Rick being right.

  • @jahrusalem3658

Rare example? I'm pretty sure the plot of like, half the episodes in this show happened because people didn't listen to or believe Rick when he said something that didn't align with their opinions or worldviews. Rick is basically that asshole character in a show that gets proven wrong at the end of the episode except he always ends up being completely right, like the snake episode. If Morty had just listened to Rick and stayed in the car or left the snake planet alone, none of the problems that came later would have happened.

Well, the changed the past on the snake planet... so it works exactly the way Morty wanted it to. Rick just refuses to give such power to his idiot grandson. And his reasons are proved in the show in this episode itself, or the episode with a lightsaber.

"Do you know how much time..." Thats not Rick saying he can't (as he ended up doing it), just that he couldn't be bothered with the time it took. As the result of Morty's negging, Rick spent the time out of spite. You get what you ask for, Morty.

I like to think Morty actually got under Rick's skin, and for the first half-hour or so, he actually managed to goad him into making the device. However, as time went by, Rick calmed down, and decided to get back at Morty. I think if the machine had been simpler, and therefore Rick had required less time to make it, Morty could have gotten his wish before logic reasserted itself over emotion in Rick's brain. Important lesson: If you're going to piss someone off into doing something for you, make sure the anger doesn't leave them before completion.

As the video game Outer Wilds demonstrates, it didn't need to be time travel OR Rick's fucked up lesson. Considering the power generation provided by things like the microverse battery, he didn't even need a supernova to power it.

Rick doesn't do time travel because he can't, he's tried, to get his wife and family back, ofc he doesn't do it. Because there is no time, there is no save points in reality, no previous instances of it, no previous expressions of the molecules before. There is just the constantly moving and changing molecules now.
