When the Bible doesn't seem reliable anymore

I got a message from a Christian who said he is beginning to doubt his faith because he no longer believes that the Bible he holds in his hands in entirely accurate.
He's not alone.
I can't answer all his questions about the accuracy of the Bible.
But there is one thing I think I might help him. At least, it helped me.
I, too, wonder about some of the stories in the Bible and some of the quotes attributed to God that don't sound anything like Jesus on his worst day.

Thank you for the graceful way you spoke of the subject. God said it is wrong! But, we are not to hate. We are commanded to love and pray for the salvation of all. I take the Bible literally. We cannot make the Bible what we want. It is Gods word. Period. Blessings to all. ❤️✝️❤️

@@StephenMillerTheWriter yes, I think some people feel like talking about it is a threat to Christianity. But for me, the threat has been inability or unwillingness to talk about it or acknowledge irreconcilable issues/questions. Which, is why I appreciate this.

Steve, I appreciate your heart in making these videos on challenging topics. This one feels especially timely for me, and is a great reminder that God gives us community with both Himself and other disciples to sort through the uncertainties of life and faith. That community in itself is often a better thing than having assurance regarding any given question or doubt. I'm thankful for your insight and graciousness, as always!

The Crucifixion …27A great number of people followed Him, including women who kept mourning and wailing for Him. 28But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.29Look, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore, and breasts that never nursed!’ 30At that time ‘ they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!”’

1Jesus said to His disciples, “It is inevitable that stumbling blocks will come, but woe to the one through whom they come! 2It would be better for him to have a millstone hung around his neck and to be thrown into the sea than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. 3Watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.…

Mr. Miller, will you do a clip on whether salvation comes only through faith in “Jesus Christ”? I just have a feeling that you may know what I am referring to. The way most Christians today understand salvation doesn’t encompass what the whole Bible says. Queen of Sheba wasn’t a Christian who attended a nondenominational church, but she will be a judge in the end. Zacchaeus wasn’t even an accepted Jew, but Jesus said “salvation has come to him and his household today”. The Good Samaritan wasn’t even Jewish. But Jesus used his example… The examples go on and on. Yes, Jesus Christ is the Way. But most people are mistaken on who Jesus Christ is. They are only seeing the 25%.

Well, that's a tough one to cover in a few minutes in a video. Let me consider it. I agree that we don't have much of a clue about what's going on in the spirit. But we're pretty sure something's going on.

Do not commit adultery is a commandment for a reason, because cheaters make homosexuals. So it's not their fault why hate people who are not at fault if the church preached about adultery like they do homosexuality who would the church hate?

How convenient. The parts of the Bible that make you feel good are true, don't worry about the rest of it This is the root of the Health and Wealth movement in Christianity typified by preachers who work to convince their congregations that if they are not healthy and wealthy their attitude is not right. God is just waiting on them to send blessings their way. It's their fault if they don't get any. If the Bible is not the true and accurate word of God it doesn't have substantial value in our lives and has no more meaning than a slogan on a t-shirt.

  • @StephenMillerTheWriter

No, it's not convenient at all. Most Christians I know who struggle over some of the content of the Bible would say it's pretty inconvenient to have to deal with Bible content that seems ungodly. And I think they would ask you which Bible you think is the authoritative word of God. I'm paraphrasing the Casual English Bible right now. Would you say I got everything right so far? It's at CasualEnglishBible.com. We humans have been telling and retelling those stories for centuries times 40. Did we all get it right all the time? Did God really tell Moses and Joshua to commit genocide in 33 cities of what is now Israel, Palestinian Territories, Jordan, and Syria? Many Christians raise serious questions about things like that. Does it diminish God to raise questions like that? Or does it elevate him when we read, for example, the law that says a husband can execute his wife if she can't prove she married as a virgin, and we say that law doesn't sound like God? If Moses and David and Hezekiah and Jesus can question God, shouldn't Christians be able to question the Bible? If we can't, some would say, don't we elevate the Bible above God? And doesn't that mean we worship the Bible as an idol? The Bible contains some of God's message. But it is not a god. The Holy Spirit contains the message of God, too. And the Spirit is God. One of the positions some Christians take is that however flawed today's Bible versions might be, the Spirit is busy making God's message personal to each listening soul. Peace to you.
