For what it's worth Mikkel Bjerg was riding full gas because he was trying to qualify for the olympic team. The Danish team has a weird qualifying process that he needed a performance here to qualify. Doesn't make it any less dumb but that was the reason. Sometimes the riders need a little boost to keep them happy for the big picture.

Chris, watching Tadej is like witnessing a rocket launch on wheels! I mean, seriously, with 6.5 km to go, he managed to snatch back a whopping 1 minute and 4 seconds from poor Phillipo Ganna. I can almost hear Ganna in LA, "Piano, Tadej, piano!" But let's face it, once Tadej's engine starts revving, there's no slowing down that beast. It's like trying to put the brakes on a speeding train with a toothpick! And now, with Pog, Roglic, Remco, and Jonas gearing up for a showdown at the Tour de France, this showdown promises more drama than a telenovela marathon and more fireworks than a Fourth of July celebration!

  • @rctedford

Watching Tadej is pure enjoyment. When I saw Thomas's chain ring I'm like whattt. I know I'm not a pro, not even close but it seems to me that pushing that on the flats is going to take a lot of energy. Than hitting the climb with it insane. He might not have lost so much time if he had a double and kept a higher tempo. But what do I know? I'm just sitting on my chesterfield watching the race and listening to the best breakdown on the net.

But when I saw the final countdown clock as he approached the finish line, it was shocking to see that he had put so much time on Ganna just on the climb! Man! He wasn’t holding back despite being a minute down at T2 checkpoint! This is what I’ll call perfect pacing! Ganna can have the next TT with no climbs! Also predicted by Pog! A rider up the road in the break can be very useful to the team leader later in the stage, either waiting at the top of a climb to pull for their team leader, like Wout VA did in the TDF for Jonas. You need a strong, full team to be able to do this without weakening your leader. It's far easier for riders to drop back than catch up. This wisdom is brought to you from the chesterfield.

The classified hub has some type of internal transmission to change the gear ratios to act like a front chainring to a 39. Am I sort of correct in my analogy?

I've raced on big rings in the 50's and I can't imagine what a ring in their 60's would feel like. And I do know that they were one of the few teams riding one-by's. I have to believe that that set up would hinder acceleration capabilities of specific types of riders.

(Doctors in the house - please feel free to correct me) - i noticed in today's post stage interview of TP - his cold sore on his lower lip wasnt showing - cold sores show up when your body's immunity is low and your body is going through another infection or general recovery after a taxing GT. last years TDF TP's cold sore was showing all through except the last few stages (remember stage 20?). Cold sores cant be treated, once the virus is in your body it never leaves. the issue isnt the cold sore, issue is TP's body is under a lot of stress and it shows. I am sure the team doctors would know this and they would be doing everything to keep TP fit and top form. Is this somthing you can talk about - how TP can fight his body's general muscle breakdown and recovery after a taxing GT to be ready for TDF 24. Is this somthing Team UAE will be actively monitoring?

Obviously Pogi is on another level and wins races and stages at the drop of a hat. It is great to see such a quality athlete with such competitive drive. But what happened to the unwritten rule of the top GC guy isn't greedy trying to win every stage? I have watched the pro races since the 1980's and the big guys left the stages for everyone else to earn their living from? I just think it is too greedy wanting to win everything

Disagree with u Chris on how G is running Ineos. Realistically he knows he is riding for second. He cannot let Plapp get major time on him. UAE is wesk. So he helped Pog but he helped himself more.

I cannot see where these blokes will find 2+ minutes on Pogi. Whoever is in his ear should tell Pogačar to chill out now, let the team do all the defending (but don't chase everything) and maybe go hard on the next ITT and second last stage considering how much money organizers paid him to be here. A big opportunity in July is there for the taking. Here he accomplished career GT stage victories and can pick up pink with conservative riding. Tomorrow ending looks steep. Lutsenko recently beat Pogi's time on Prato di Tivo if that is the same climb tomorrow.

I didn't think it wasn't wise and i still feel so that Pog. jumped behind a 《rival》and then continued with a whole chasing peloton behind him, but ten times worse was Thomas to go behind him, because that's not how you stay in touch but how you will surely tumble from the podium. Now here Pog. showed how you built up your time trial, and flatten the mountain by the way. But yeah, Geraint looses even his communication, even if that was not his fault. I Feel sorry for him. But what and why are cyclists such bad tacticians? It seems unique! Why is that Chris, if you permit?

The journalist said "With regards to the team: Ganna, Arensman and Sheffield, apart from you, had an amazing performance today". In spanish if you use the word "a parte" the "apart from you" would actually translate to "including you". I am guessing that in italian a very similar thing must occur, so I do not think he meant to disrespect G at all.

I'm tired of the Pogi show. Cavendish just overtook Cippolini for the most career sprint wins, pulling into second place for most overall career wins. At 38. Against Groenevegen and others. His post race interview was sheer grace with kind words spoken in a humble manner for each of his Astana team members. Like Peyton Manning and Joe Montana, he's highly competitive and talented, but ultimately ungarish and selfless. Tadej is the grandstanding, self-indulgent Tom Brady of cycling. He does Tom one better, though, in never getting angry or blaming others when things go poorly. So I have hope he matures, as the Manxman did. For now, Pogi is too flashy for me to not be bored or unmoved.
