Once you were on the bottom in the top lock you should have opened the gate to the 2nd lock and let the water run into both locks together that would have saved you going up and down in the chamber and you would have been able to see the 2nd chamber from the boat

And you’ve done everyone else a HUGE service by filming this episode, helping others in their understanding of the possibilities. And the music, once again, was so nice when you walked the ramparts.

We got stuck in that lock last year when we first moved our boat. No leaking lock though being newbies and not knowing what we were doing hubby hadn't shut the paddle fully in the bottom lock so as fast as we were trying to fill the middle one we were loosing it, luckily enough there were two crt workmen having lunch in a van and noticed us struggling 🤣🤣🤣

OMG..! So pleased that Fran is ok... It would really have put the wind up me..! Reminds me of the time that I got stuck in Somerton Deep lock... I drove in ok, went down ok, but the bottom gate wouldn't fully open because of silt building up behind it and there wasn't enough width to drive the boat out. Still get nightmares about that..which was 18 months ago and we'd only owned a boat for a few weeks .🍷🍷

That could have been a very different outcome.! Thank goodness for you guys, and your boat that it wasn't. The possibility of your stern gear , i.e skeg, prop being seriously damaged by something under the water in the lock chamber is very real. By the way that particular lock (middle lock) was exactly the same when we went through it on the way to Elmsmere port in 1981. Nice video guys, all the Best.

Well done. We had the same sort of problems on the BCN north of Birmingham and Dudley. Not a staircase problem, but the pounds between 3 locks were totally empty! In early May we began watching your journey as result of Kevin from Aslan’s recommendation. Of course we had to start at the very beginning and have now worked our way up to this video as of last night. We are with you in February 2020, listening to your travel plans and thinking, “We need to warn them of what is coming!” We will stay tuned to see how you deal with the pandemic: Do you stay on the boat? Do you go back to the cottage? Will everyone be ok? We are enjoying your series and poor Rich’s fussing over rain (what we wouldn’t give for rain in Texas!) and your comments on how hot it was for a couple of days the preceding summer, while we are melting in multiple 100 degree F days. You make us laugh and show us beautiful scenery and we are blessed in getting to know you from afar.

Braver than me Fran. When we went to Chester, I panicked when I saw how deep the locks were and my lovely, capable 12 year old nephew took my very new boat through! We moored first a couple of days in the basin at the bottom. A historic working boat was moored next to us, the wind blew their very old Buckby can in the canal. My boys spent the whole day with magnets and eventually found the can! They were well rewarded with sweets from the grateful owners. Happy days!

Lovely city Chester, though much changed since my youth. There was no high rise then. Glad your safe after the mishap in the stair case lock. Enjoy your videos both about canal living and the tours of the local attractions.

I think it was one of my scariest moments on the boat. It is worse when you are stuck in the lock and can't do anything but rely on others.

Poor Franny, poor drone. Glad you escaped the dodgy lock. You won't forget that in a hurry. May I suggest taping a strip of polystyrene to the drone, in case it ever ends up in the drink. At least it won't disappear immediately... All the best.

Another lovely Vlog! Your new intro is beautiful! Glad you emerged from the nerve wracking lock unscathed! I love it when we get a glimpse of your weaving, Fran! I'd love to see more. Maybe devote a good part of a vlog on your process and inspiration. Rich, hope you are able to get the drone running again soon. I love those atmospheric shots. All the best, from beautiful Port Angeles, Washington

We had big trouble in a 3 chambered stair case lock on the Leeds and Liverpool in October. In the end I was able to sort it and get us through unscathed but it was VERY scary - and I still have nightmares about it now and again. I have a hint as to how you must have felt! You handled it so well and I am so glad everything is ok.

Know exactly how you feel - think alot of us boaters have all been there - this happened to us half way up Wigan flight - exactly the same - only it was going dark - so one lesson we learned -- never go through locks late in the day - so well done you two -I thought you both kept calm - thank you for sharing your adventures - - - stay safe -

Thanks for showing the some times hard side of canal cruising. Glad you managed to get it resolved safely. It also highlights the severe lack of funding available to the Canal groups. Amazing how the governments always have money for 'The flavour of the month' projects, but can't see the benefits of supporting none-profit organizations. I'll stop the rant here. Gloucester, thanks for showing us another fascinating town to visit when all this current madness subsides. Personally, can't see another UK trip till summer 2022. On that happy note I'm going to have a libation and watch another episode from your channel and Rich, keep your batteries warm mate. Be well, Be safe.

Hello from Oregon! We backtracked to the first of your vlogs and are finally caught up. My husband and I so enjoy the two of you and watching your adventures. Glad you got through the locks okay and were able to tour beautiful Chester. Our daughter is studying abroad this term in York, and we are learning quite a lot about UK geography and history from all of you. (Well, mostly you - you know how it is with teenagers - you only get so much out of them, especially when it's such long distance and they are off on the greatest adventure of their life!) Really looking forward to keeping up with your travels. You guys are amazing! :)
