Samantha is right on with this knowledge. A lot of times I'll have the ice machine wrap on my knee and the heating pad wrapped around my thigh. Pure Heaven

Thank you. Good information. My surgeon said nice warmth is good. Not too hot, not too cold. At Mt 6 week follow-up.

Thanks for the recommendation Dr. Sam. I ordered these on your recommendation and look forward to trying them. I am 8 weeks out but am overdoing it with getting back to life nothing crazy but nonetheless my fibula capsule is getting inflammed as my hamstrings and IT are getting extremely tight causing trouble when straightening and then bending my knee as in sitting down or going down stair or when using the stationary bike.. i am working on reducing inflammation and keeping up some range of motion exercises to keep up my good ranges. before I can resume strengthening exercises. TKR is a journey with some ups and downs and frustrations. Thank you so much for your help and expertise.

Surprisingly enough...I used ice 90% of the team..The 10% of the time that I used heat ...I applied it directly on my knee...If I have a TKR on my other leg...I know that ice is for the knee and heat is for the muscles...My application of the ice consisted of 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off..Thanks again

I'd like to hear your opinion on diclofenac cream. My experience is that it aids with both swelling and inflammation reduction, which reduces pain.

How long does the stiffness last. Is there anything you can put on your knee for the stiffness

Heat can help with stiffness. Best thing is doing the right exercises and staying consistent.

I've experimented and sometimes use cold and sometimes heat. Do whatever works for you. From what I've read, not every doctor or physio agrees that ice necessarily reduces swelling. It could be the weight of the ice pack that temporarily reduces swelling. Ice bought a TENS machine which helps me maybe its just a distraction from the pain but that's a good thing.

Hi Dr Sam can I just ask a question please. I am almost 11 weeks post TRKR and my knee feels at the moment like it is going to buckle. Is this normal. I am back using my crutches again, I am still doing my exercises 3 x daily but have been lifting 6 yr old grandchild. I have stopped doing the icing and elevating. Any suggestions welcome. I see my surgeon for the first time on 13/02/24 Or should I contact him. The buckling feeling sort of passes when I do my exercises. TIA.

It’s normal if you aren’t doing exercises. You’ll need to do a quad strengthening exercise program. Please join my 4 Week Strength, Balance & Stretching Class. Class starts February 4th. www.succeedcourses.com/Exercise-class

Do you recommend the MUA procedure for scar tissue

It depends. I usually recommend conservative measures first like the Knee Bending Course. www.succeedcourses.com/Knee-bending-course

Correct. Learned over the years of working with different surgeons and what the general recommendations are. I also make my own recommendations based on my knowledge etc.
