When Formula One First Used Ground Effect

Спорт

Formula One has entered a new era in 2022. The cars have been transformed in order to take advantage of an aerodynamic phenomenon known as ground effect. This relatively old technology has proved challenging for the teams and drivers to adjust to, and the phenomenon of ‘porpoising’ has come back into the public consciousness. The use of ground effect on these cars however pales in comparison to those of the past. Ground effect was used for the first time over 40 years ago, kickstarting the aerodynamic revolution in Formula One. Compared to today however, it was used to such a degree that the cars generated virtually all their downforce from underneath, and after significantly increasing the speed of the cars, it was eventually banned on safety grounds, with flat-bottomed cars being the norm for the next 39 years. So, let’s look at the first time Formula One used ground effect.

It certainly is a standard bin lid. Brabham duct taped it to the fan to stop people peeking. Like any self-respecting F1 team, the bin lid carried Parmalat branding!

Great video. One minor inaccuracy, the reference to 'flexible skirts' is incorrect. They were rigid sliding skirts. After the 6cm rule in 1981, flexible skirts were permitted to touch the road in 1982. Ground effects were banned in November 82.

From what i've heard, the Lotus 88 was not praised as it was difficult to setup, drive and it's aerodynamics didnt work very well. It was banned out of fear of its potential

Given how insanely smooth track surfaces are now and the improvements in driver safety I think they should bring back the skirts and reduce/remove over body aero similar to the 9X8 to get the dirty air issue back to 2022 levels now that the teams are saying following has degraded again this year.

12:43 Just because Colin Chapman called his Lotus 88's bodywork envelope a "secondary chassis", it didn't make it one. That's why it was banned. A nice try but totally illegal. More to the point, why was the 88's bodywork so narrow? Was it because Colin wrote the technical rules for Bernie's mooted breakaway F1 series - the World Federation of Motor Sport? Either way, the 88 was slow, hard to set up and ulimately it ended Lotus's chances of success in '81. Very nice potted history of ground effect.

0:45 Wait... wut? After senna's death in 1994, flat bottom cars were banned and a plank was installed under the car that poked out under the floor of the car so that sufficient airflow was kept under the car, if the plank was worn more than 1mm on one of the designated measuring spots, the car would be disqualified.

The bottom was still flat though. The legality plank was just to enforce running higher
