The 90s were are rough time for us metal heads , i was a teenager in the 80s and purchased 'kill em all' , 'hell awaits' etc off the shelf . Grunge was never my scene and thought metal would never recover , but it did in a big way .Death to all but metal 😁 Cheers James , great vid as per norm.

I discovered European metal in the mid 90's. I was already a fan of Helloween since the 80's, but I discovered the rest of it in that period. Gamma Ray, Iron Savior, Blind Guardian, Stratovarius, etc.

Gotta disagree - the 90s were awesome for metal. Whether you dug grunge or not we got some classic albums from Alice In Chains and Soundgarden. The rise of Death Metal with great stuff from Morbid Angel, Obituary, Carcass,Death et al. Black Metal? Emperor, Enslaved, Mayhem and lots more! Industrial Metal - with classics from Ministry and Nine Inch Nails, early Manson, White Zombie. Thrash and Groove? Highlights from Sepultura, Machine Head, Pantera. Nu Metal - I wasn't a great fan of to be honest, but there was some good stuff - just not a lot of it! The birth of Melodic Death Metal - again, Carcass needs mentioning, but At The Gates, Amorphis, In Flames, Dark Tranquility. Opeth? Just because a lot of 80s bands suffered doesn't mean the 90s was a bad decade. Hell, even Judas Priest gave us - arguably - their best album in Painkiller in the 90s! The 90s was a GREAT time to be a metal head (from one who started off in the 80s WITH the like of Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth etc) Oh, and in regards to the black album, from someone who discovered Metallica with Master (in 86) I LOVE it. It's a masterpiece in my opinion, alongside Ride, Master and Justice. There's this retconning going on these days that Black wasn't liked back in the day - BULLSHIT. Every metalhead owned a copy back then, and LOVED it. And EVERY metal band wanted a piece of that pie. This is why so many thrash bands changed their sound - NOT because of grunge, but because of the black album.

I am a similar age to you, back in the day one when I was a teenager in the early 90’s one of the kids on my street had a dad whom worked at a big magazine publishers. He would randomly give me metal releases (promo CD’s, VHS tapes, cassette tapes) that were lying around the office. One of those was Xentrix’s Kin. As I was already a fan, I was soooooo happy. Loved it ever since. Surprised you didn’t mention Chaos A.D.

David Ellefson's bass sounds great... must be a day ending in "y". "Ashes" has to be their most underrated song... When Dave Mustaine is putting out a strong vocal performance, I have to recognize it. Overkill did the transition from thrash to groove metal very well, and when they starting injecting the thrash an album later, the world was good again. Along the same lines, Testament had a strong follow-up with Low.

I loved what my favourite thrash bands were doing in the 90s. I like the Black album but for me Load is the one. I listen to that more than the rest of their catalogue combined. I think SowN and Stomp are both fantastic and are my go to Anthrax albums. Like you, Countdown was my way in and I'd say Countdown, Youthanasia and Cryptic are all great. Enjoyable video.

Overkill may have changed on I Hear Black ( which is still a great album) , but they came back with a vengeance on W.F. O and have never looked back

It has a few really good tunes but i mostly find the album disappointing

Agreed with pretty much everything that you said. Renewal, The Ritual, and Sound Of White Noise are some of my favorites from those bands. In the 90's, some of these albums dropped as I was discovering metal, and I was also getting into their earlier stuff so, for me personally, it was an exciting time. I guess I took the "new" albums for what they were and not for what they weren't.

Sound Of White Noise is my favourite Anthrax album. It's pretty damn great. Sadly the Bush era couldn't keep up the same level of quality, so we got Joey back - which I'm not against.

Fantastic video James! 'Sound of White Noise' is my favorite from all the albums you've showed. Simply a brilliant record. They've changed their sound and delivered amazing tunes. 🤘 I've also heard those stories about the recent Bush Anthrax vinyl reissues, thats why I'll be waiting for a proper reissue.

Another great video. The Ritual', 'I Hear Black', and 'Sound of White Noise' are really good albums IMO. I really like 'Kin' too. 'Independent' has a lot of really good songs on it, but Phil's vocals are pretty bad on some of the songs. 'Countdown to Extinction' is a one-in-a-million album. Good stuff.

Sound of white noise was my introduction to anthrax and it's still my fave album by them picked up the ritual and I hear black both on the cheap last year I don't mind them at all the less said about force of habit the better the cover looks more fitting on a college rock or alt rock album!

Yeah Sound of White Noise is fantastic, a very difficult time for Anthrax but they really delivered the goods. Yeah Force Of Habit is a stinker, Generic is the word that springs to mind. Cheers Robert as always fella 👍

Great video again, thank you very much for the trip back to these times. I remember back then, I really hated most of these albums (only Annihilator delivered a killer in my opinion, Jeff Waters is out of this world anyways hahaha). Nowadays, I really like "The Ritual", "Sound Of White Noise" or "Renewal". Megadeth and Metallica did great at the beginning of the 90ies, but then came the really bad albums while or at the end of the 90ies. A bit surprised you did not mention the big changes that Sepultura gone through with Roots or Slayer with Diabolus in Musica (do not like these albums at all). Also the terrible "Green" album by Forbidden and "Mourning Has Broken" by Sabbat could be mentioned here. Worth a mention would also be "Grin" by Coroner, a very experimental album (but still great). Can't wait for your Death Metal video Episode 3. Cheers from Switzerland !

I saw Anthrax at Camden Underworld (met the band too) the week White Noise came out. Bit scary its 30 years ago, I remember the time well and purchasing those albums. For me 'Countdown to Extinction' is the killer, an album I keep returning to all these years later. In '91 and '92 it still felr like the same scene I disovered and loved in the late 80s. Metallica & Countdown and others felt a natural evolution. More accessible, but still top quality metal records. '93 felt different - Pantera, White Zombie..etc the scene definitely changed. Stopped buying Kerrang around '94, just wasnt into the metal scene as it was at that point. 'Load', 'Stomp 442', even 'Divine Intervention' - very different era. 'Youthanasia' was good and bands like Overkill still put out good stuff (WFO, Killing Kind), Kreators 'Cause for Conflict'. The 90s were strange for fans who came into the metal scene in the later 80s.

I enjoyed your production but in the future when talking about the 90s and metal, you MUST talk about Cannibal Corpse. They are the best band ever in the "Death Metal Genre" and their first few albums were very cool blending of "Hardcore" and "Thrash" .

I've only recently heard Kin and I have to admit I quite enjoyed it for what it is anyway. I Hear Black is often talked about with disdain but again I was late to the party so it doesn't come with the super fan baggage many 90s albums have. Anthrax is certainly the best of the bunch for me, I don't think it sounds dated at all. Enjoyed the ranking at the end.

Kin is ok for what it is, its just massively inferior compared to the 2 that came before it. I Hear Black is a good album for sure. Agreed on Anthrax, excellent album released at a very difficult time for the band. Cheers Andy

I dont hate the black album, nor do i hate Load and Re-Load, but to me the real follow ups to Justice For All is Death Magnetic, Hardwired… and 72 Seasons. Got into Metallica in the mid 80’s.

Agreed about Testament and Exodus. Never liked that Xentrix record. Liked that Anthrax ine when I bought the Bush era stuff a few years ago, hated Only when it came out. Pissed me off that they sacked Joey. I even like Stomp 442 now. Mental Renewal isn't great, but at least it isn't fucking Endorama!! The Sacred Reich is ok, but I prefer the Heal album. Countdown To Extinction has it's moments. Skin O' My Teeth murders. Great video James. Liking this mini series!!

I got into thrash deeply in 1992. I was 13. My getting into Exodus and Overkill was delayed by several years because of the albums they put out at the time (Force of Habit and I Hear Black). I’ve learned to accept those albums for what they are now, but as a 13 year old wanting proper thrash, those albums didn’t cut it. I didn’t hear Years of Decay until my 30’s and now think it’s a masterpiece.

I Hear Black is one my favorite metal albums, other than that I think him on point. Sound of White Noise was an amazing album also, unfortunately is downhill from there until Joey was back in the band.

People have to understand the context that record labels literally stopped returning the phone calls of many 80's hard rock and metal bands starting around circa 1992.... The musical landscape changed so fast. You basically had to slow your music down, add some degree of alternative and/or groove influence, or risk being called a holdover from the dorky 80's.... Yes, folks, there was a period from about 1992-1996 where people absolutely hated the 80's. Trashed the decade as shallow, soulless, and irredeemable.

I agree with all the points you made. I saw an interview with Tom Keifer from Cinderella years ago and it said back in around 91/92 the promoters/Radio stations etc they'd been working with for years overnight wanted nothing to do with them at all. Cheers for watching and commenting

I love the fact that you cherish albums that aren't "perfect". Ringwear, Dents, SEAM splits and all. Every Record now has a story. Its not your typical Near Mint "cookie cutter" Collection.

Great video James! Bands certainly changed their sound in the 90's, due to Metallica's Black album. It was a massive album, and i think bands just wanted a little bit of that. Plus, things changed a lot in the 90's. The Ritual is a good album, same for Countdown to extinction. Although they clearly were following Metallica. The others i haven't listened to, but I really need to check out the John Bush Anthrax albums and I hear black. I wanna do an Exodus ranking, so I'll have to reluctantly listen to Force of habit. Nice one man 😊🤘🏻

I think there was a lot of pressure from record companies to get bands releasing more commercial albums as like you say they wanted their bands chasing that Black album money. That Exodus is very poor compared to their other output You never know though, you might really like it. Cheers as always mate 👍

It's not fair really, the band should do what they wanna do, not be dictated to by labels. Yeah I've heard that Exodus album isn't great, but I've gotta check it out for the ranking. You think SOOO much like me! I got into more extreme metal in 1993, and I confide that Sound of White Noise is the best metal album in the modern era. I personally HATE the term 'groove metal' and don't believe in it...metal just went to lower tunings and got heavier and thicker instead of just fast. If I may, I'd also like to mention bands that redeveloped in response to the Black album: Flotsam & Jetsam-Quatro ('92) COC- Blind (very late '91) Sepultura- Chaos AD ('93) The Organization (Death Angel minus Mark '93) S.T.- The Art of Rebellion ('92) and Nuclear Assault-Something Wicked ('93) had all got heavier as well.

Testament the ritual album love it. Let go of my world is track from that album. Exodus - force of habit. Wasn't over keen of that album. overkill - I hear black was pretty good, but could of been better. Anthrax the sound of white noise was good, but stomp 442 really did for me with john bush and with Dime doing most of the solo's made it even better. Scared reich indentions really good. Annihator set the world on fire. Another good album from them. Megadeth with countdown was much better for me than rust in piece.

Hi James!!! yeah the 90's was a tough period for many rock bands from the 80's glam/hard rock/thrash too..... and you can see how many of them tried very hard to adapt their sound and looks too. I really like 90's Anthrax with John Bush. It seems all the bands were trying to do what Metallica achieved with the S/T album....I have not heard that Overkill album, somebody talk about it as a "Sabbath" sounding release. cheers and be well

I hated The Art of Rebellion, but really enjoyed Something Wicked. It was a huge, fresh, improvement over Nuclear Assault's previous album, and it sounds better then their previous two.

A bit of a hit and miss selection there James. The Black Album was a real game changer in the metal world and I wonder if Metallica had any idea while recording it how much of an impact it would have. The Testament and Megadeth are probably my two favourites from these albums.

The ritual is my top 5 of theirs Love countdown - haven’t listened to in a while but when I put in , I forget just how good it is Can’t for the life of me find “sound of white noise” on cd in any shops here. Ps going to see anthrax, kreator and testament in November!!! Can’t wait

Some great picks here. Of course Metallica takes the cake on this topic, but what an amazing album. I Hear Black is actually one of my top 3 Overkill albums so that one was great. Megadeth's Countdown is killer as well. It was actually the album that brought me to Megadeth lol. Great vid my friend.

Great stuff James, love some thrash. Not a big fan of Xentrix or Exodus or this one from Kreator. I Hear Black isnt bad. The Ritual is excellent, love most Testament albums. Set the World on Fire is ok. Countdown to Extinction 10/10 superb. Sound of White Noise is really good and I dont listen to it enough. Black Album, love it, some cracking songs, and thats from someone who loves their early stuff too (and Load).

Overkill did not really change, they did a more bluesy sabbath type album and then put out WFO shortly after I hear black, WFO is a masterpiece of thrash metal.

I was completely bored off thrash by the early 90s. I sold pretty much all of my thrash albims except Slayer. I was really into Sepultura too, but they werent pure thrash anymore either. I loved White Zombie and thought they were the freshest thing Id heard in a long time. My 90s bands were Obituary, Entombed, Carcass, Corrosion of Conformity, Danzig, Sick of it All, Agnostic Front, Biohazard, Cathedral, Machinehead, Sepultura, Slayer, Rollins Band, Fear Factory, etc. but no real thrash metal anymore. I eventually got back into thrash in the 2000s, and recollected all those albums again. I would add Voivod and Suicidal Tendencies. I know a lot of people love Art of Rebellion, but I hate it. It was a huge let down for me after how much I loved Lights, Cameral, Revolution.

I like a.lotbof the 90s bands you listed here. Fear Factory being the pick of the bunch, I always thought those guys never really got the recognition they deserve. Cheers

For me Overkill's 'I Hear Black' and Testament's 'The Ritual' were the biggest disappointments/departures from their previous albums (Years of Decay and Horrorscope were awesome!). I still to this day struggle to appreciate them in their entirety and have only come to like the odd song, like Agony or World of Hurt respectively. Annihilator's 'Set the World on Fire' should be listened in isolation of the whole rest of their catalogue, it was such a departure. I didn't struggle with that album as much as it was the first full album of their's I heard after hearing one of the songs on the radio. Never, Neverland was a stronger album though IMO. As for Anthrax, being a big fan of the Belladonna era, I thought 'Sound of White Noise' had a few shining moments on it, such as Potter's Field and Only but found most of the rest of it forgettable. Metallica and Megadeth's albums have deservedly aged the best out of the lot like I'm sure most people would agree.

In my opinion, Overkill are the only band I know that stayed consistent even through the 90's. Testament change a bit in the 90's but bounce back to thrash with 2008's The Formation of Damnation. Metallica definitely followed trends the most during the 90's. Metallica eventually did go back to thrash with Hardwired... but it's definitely not the same Metallica from the 80's. I'll be the firstborn admit that 80's Metallica is my favourite but they continued to evolve and release great music. Overkill have always been very consistent, I'm definitely with you on that. Cheers mate 👍

Sodom stayed really consistent, even though Tom did break up Sodom for a bit and was making more money with Onkle Tom. Consistency is great, but it can become stagnant.

I never liked exodus at all or testement either, overkill are better than both i think.

I was massively disappointed with the black album. I'd been a huge fan of And Justice, a very dark, bleak album. I listened to that a lot and couldn't wait for the next release. And then i heard Enter Sandman, how could they go from something so deep as One to that? Tried to like the black album but for me a real disappointment album. The Ritual never got the acclaim it deserves, Electric Crown is a great track, the guitar tone is really good. I'd say the only problem with the album is that the songs are all teh same tempo, it lacked variety in pace. Agree with the Exodus album, a couple of really good songs. For me one of my fave early thrash albums was Mordred In This Life, a great blend of thrash and funk which sadly was nipped in the bud when the grunge scene gained traction. Massively disappointed with the Anthrax Sound of White Noise, one of the worst mixed albums i've ever heard, no idea why they got someone to mix the album with zero experience of mixing metal. It's an awful, awful record. Bush is a decent singer but that album was terrible.

Modered is a band I still haven't got round to checking out. Yeah The Ritual is decent but like you saybthe lack of different tempos to the songs is a problem. I can definitely understand why old school Metallica fans don't like the black album. I've always loved The Sound of White Noise and never had an issue with the mix personally. @@mrboulder9714 have a look for the In This Life album. Probably Mordred's most diverse album. They were integrating DJ scratching way before the Nu metal guys of the late 90s. The first album Fools Game hints at what was to come

I Hear Black was quite a disappointing album to me. It's tough to believe it was the same lineup as the near-transcendent Horrorscope.

really dont like The Ritual. To me it's clearly their worst album, yes Demonic is much better. Overkill did awesome in the 90s. They even gave us a borderline stoner/sludge metal album with I Hear Black (Big Black Sabbath influence eh? i thought that title was cheeky)

I think Demonic is Testament's weakest personally. Yeah that was definitely a Sabbath reference in the I Hear Black album name. Cheers for watching

Dark time for thrash back then. I used to cringe when I heard them all trying to slow down and use the drop D tuning. I can never understand why bands try to follow fashion when they are from a different time. There's no bigger bullshitter than the musician at times. Trying to justify following the trend. It very rarely ever works out for bands either. Over the years I've owned most of these albums but as of right now I don't care for any of them. Saying that, Metallica is a fantastic sounding album that I use to try any audio equipment out.

A lot of them of them of course were under pressure from the record companies who were chasing the 'black' album money and in some cases it just didn't work, the Scared Reich and Exodus albums are piss poor especially. Cheers Mike as always mate

​@@mrboulder9714There was pressure in some cases but in other and even worse cases, the labels flat out ghosted bands and treated them like lepers. Thus why so many 80's metal bands dissolved around 1992-1993.

90s Kreator (post “Coma”) is appalling. A great example of a great metal vocalist who was/is terrible as a “singer”. Oh, yeah, crap music, too. F that era.

I absolutely hated Renewal...still do. Outcast has a couple really good songs though eg. Leave This World Behind and Phobia.
