My husband and I are also child free by choice. Now that I’m in my 50s and menopause is a thing, I no longer get the intrusive question of when we’re going to have children. Society should normalize not wanting children. It’s not the be-all, end-all of life. It’s not the reason for our existence. I don’t think any less of people for having children, why do they think less of us for not having children? It’s really strange.

Being a mother especially a single mother is just hard work with no gratitude much of the time. I wish I had of have more sense than to have married at 23 years of age, become a mother at 24 years of age and then become a single mum just 4 months after that. Exactly this, I honestly don’t know why other people need to know such personal things about others? I find it very strange. Like I myself really couldn’t care less what other people do or the decisions they make for their lives, why would it interest or affect me? Childfree couples (or singles too for that matter) always seem to be the subject of such interest to other people and I’ve no idea why some people feel the need to ask such probing questions. I also find the whole childfree thing to be controversial to some people, why? It’s odd to me. Having kids seems a natural normal thing to do to some people, but to others choosing to remain childfree it’s seen sometimes as odd. Also can’t stand it when people tell me I will regret it when I’m older, like no really no, I’m 44 I can’t think of anything worse for me to do. It’s my decision no one else needs to pass comment on it thanks. This is just my take.

@@stormskies3861 You’re so right. People can get quite intrusive and judgmental about a very intimate personal choice. At my age, I now feel comfortable just telling people that I never wanted children and am glad I made the conscious choice not to have any. From a linguistic perspective you may find the following interesting: Norwegian: kom här Afrikaans: kom hier Norwegian: flink. Afrikaans: flink means to to something „quickly „ Faroese: vaerwel ( good bye) Afrikaans: vaarwel ( farewell. ) In Afrikaans saying „farewell“ is different to Faroese. In Faroese „vaerwel“ means goodbye, whereas the Afrikaans „vaarwel“ means that you will never see this person ever again. So it means „ have a good life“.

My husband and I feel the same about having kids. I’m 32 and he’s 34, I’ve always said I’ve wanted kids but never REALLY thought about the implications and now that I’m 32 I still do not have baby fever or the urge to have kids. We’re undecided but leaning towards not having kids because right now we don’t have any compelling reason to have them and we want to take the decision very seriously. And like Christoffer said, life is easier without kids, but I’m sure for those who want kids it is 100% worth it. Our two cats keep us on our toes enough already! ❤️

Ah, it's the opposite. Kids ground you in something meaningful, something more important than yourself. I often found myself and my wife fighting or just doing dumb stuff before we had kids. Now, we are together in a much deeper way and my life is much more purposeful and meaningful. There's something deeply soothing and natural about raising kids despite the chaos they cause. I respect people who choose not to of course. I wish I had more than 2 to be honest.
