Vader could sense the man had no idea who he was. Also that the man was very good at what he did but just didn’t have the context and knowledge Vader has. He did everything he was supposed to and even stood up for himself, which probably slightly pleased Vader. The man lived.

This exactly, he was being a very responsible soldier, and following his duties to a T. That and everything he said was true, looking at all the possible evidence at that time, a bomb made sense, especially if there was no record of those special jedi starfighters. How would a fairly new soldier know about something that was stricken from the record, especially if he was a child during the Clone Wars? Vader isn't unreasonable and the first thing Sidious tought him was not to needlessly kill Imperial assets.

Vader typically kills over incompetence or failure. This officer, while certainly testing Vader's patience with his attitude was initially respectful to the Dark Lord, and did everything he was supposed to do and provided Vader with the materials he needed to get a lead on the Jedi. Vader in his prime likely would have still not harmed the officer in these circumstances, but would have warned him to watch his tongue unless he likes it served up extra crispy.

I genuinely don't think Vader would care that he was a slave. I could see him starting to care if the officer and Vader had an argument about loyalty, and the officer goes off on a tangent about how his mother dies from raiders, followed by tying in how the Empire had given him purpose or whatever, finalized with the fact that he would gladly kill all those who go against "justice" or whatever. Something that would slightly hit a nerve with Vader recently-ish after Episode 3 that would grant the officer Vader's respect. But, again, it would need to be done *perfectly* . Vader is known for not giving two fricks about anything other than his Empire or whathaveyou.

True. At first glance, everything they assumed was perfectly logical. It was certainly a more likely explanation than for a Jedi to have returned to the planet, and for their astromech droid to have destroyed the ship to avoid being detected. In time, they WOULD have determined that it was an old Jedi starfighter. In fact, that conclusion would probably have taken another couple of hours, at most. Darth Vader merely sped along the process, likely because he personally recognized many of the pieces among the wreckage. He was a mechanically-inclined individual who had years of close experience with such ships, after all. One could probably even call him an expert on Jedi starfighters.

Vader was still new and could not yet expect for an officer to know who he is. Also, the officer showed both guts, but was also wise enough to come to see the reassembly of the ship through the force as a proof of Vader's competence. In fact this is the most notable thing about this episode. The officer was not scared of Vader's power, he was impressed. And this, in turn, might have saved him.

I don't think Vader would have just chocked him out. He didn't fail him and he really didn't know who Vader was. Vader kills people for failing to work as needed while the Major had done his job. I think the EU has given the mistaken impression Vader is kill happy but he doesn't kill Ozzel when he questions him (because his advice was legitimate albeit wrong) he only kills him when he goes agaist Vaders orders and alerts the Rebels to their presence. Captian Needa is also killed but only when he looses a ship that by all rights they had in their grasp. Motti publicly questions Vader in front of other high ranking imperial officers and Tarkin who might outrank Vader on the death star, but Vader only chokes him when he starts to get disrespectful towards him and questions his position and authority. The point being Vader while he has a reputation of killing subordinates for every slight really only (in the movies) eliminates those in his chain of command who don't workout. the forces under him are a well oiled machine. The Major while he does question Vader really had no reason to know who Vader was, he only just established Vader was his superior moments before and was clearly confused on how Vader related to him in the chain of command. The Major also did two things that ensured that he wouldn't have been killed, one he found an important lead on the Jedi for Vader, and two and perhaps even more critically, he followed procedure and alerted Vader to the Jedi.

In my opinion, Vader didn't choke this major because 1. as you said, he was new, 2. he was focused on finding the Jedi and did not have the time to deal with the major and 3. he did not have a reputation to keep up with... yet. In a few comics down the line, Vader is officially introduced to the Imperial military. To both stop individuals from attempting to assassinate him (let's be real, they could never do so; however, Vader was likely getting sick of stopping whatever he was doing to deal with them (kind of like those "bad guys" in videogames who can never actually defeat you, but you kill them because they are annoying)) and to show that he has *power* , he choked 7 or so officers in front of everyone. From then, Vader had a "reputation" to keep up with. And, both as Anakin Skywalker and as Darth Vader, the man was very prominent when it came to keeping up his reputation to those around him.

The Major did ONE thing that all but ensured his survival: he followed the instructions to inform this "Darth Vader" about anything with even the slightest connection to the Jedi. As others have said, he clearly had no idea who Vader was. Yet he still notified him per the new directive. He also remained respectful, using the appropriate form of address, even when clearly irritated by Vader's assertion he was "wrong". Vader always regarded competence as hugely important, as well as loyalty, and even initiative within certain bounds. Remember, too, the Emperor himself told him he "didn't want to be ruling an Empire of the dead". Pretty much every Empire officer or official Vader killed died for incompetence or for Vader to achieve a specific purpose. Killing this Major didn't fit either category, and indeed he'd shown he could be trusted to follow instructions; someone did have to search other parts of Coruscant, and this Major apparently was competent and could be trusted. Killing him would be against Vader's own interests.

The thing is, Vader still sees himself as the good guy, the hero. He doesn't kill imperial soldiers/officers for a moment of ignorant disrespect. He gives them an opportunity to correct. He kills those he views as cowardly/useless (or worse) to the empire. Which is many, due to nepotism and corruption in the imperial officer corps. By removing such dead weight, he increases the efficiency/capability of the imperial forces. From his point of view. Since the imperial forces are the good guys, doing the good work, it all serves the greater good. The end justifies the means.

I think Vader knew that this major was going to be a loyal asset once he saw a display of the force. It isn't like that dude in the movies who Vader choked, that wasn't purely for his lack of respect, that was because he was arrogant and defiant. This character seems very much to be an "all business" serious type.
