Whelen WPS-2809, Hi-Lo: Columbus, IN (Bartholomew Co. Tornado Siren Test, HD)
Ғылым және технология
This is a monthly test of Bartholomew County's Emergency Warning System tested the first Friday of the month at 12 Noon. And yes, you're hearing it right, they test in "hi-lo" tone. In fact, all their sirens sound in that tone during any activation, including warnings. Why they use that tone is a good question but unfortunately I have no answer. My guess is that they wanted something that grabbed your attention better than a generic, steady tone. The wail tone probably didn't appeal to them either. But it's definitely unique, just like the town. Just do a quick "street view road trip" around downtown and observe the architecture around there. Fun fact of the day; the town ranks sixth in the nation in architectural innovation. Cool, huh? (maybe?)
This siren is located on 5TH and Chestnut Streets. I decided to include the audio from both my phone and my main camera so that you can hear the difference of the acoustics when the camera is pointed toward and away from the siren. For that reason, I added extra angles and decided to use newer, more efficient video editing software for the rest of my videos (goodbye Windows Live Movie Maker, we will miss you very much).

This siren sounds futuristic with the hi-lo tone. And with this tone playing it looks like a reactor core meltdown is about to happen.

Hi low? /🐍🐍🐍🐍🐠🐠🐍
This sound always gives me flashbacks to when we would have tornado warnings when I was younger. These sirens would go off and I would immediately go into panic mode lol. They test them the first Friday of every month at noon

That is admittedly a beautiful sound.
I grew up in Columbus, IN. I remember as a kid in the 90's when they put these sirens up they really gave me the chills. The dual hi-low tone really got your attention at any time of the day. Been wanting to hear a video of these, thanks for posting.

@@aether9747 Upon closer examination with a frequency analyzer, it's 455 Hz and 630 Hz.
I often would assume that the reason for the existence of the hi-lo tone is that it's used for floods/flash floods and also fires but maybe also what you said, getting peoples attention
0:01 rip speakers
The hi lo tones are really cool! What particular emergencies are the hi lo tones for here? Lambert airport in St. Louis actually uses this siren with that tone for severe weather to warn the ramp agents to move inside.
