If the Horn 📯 is not used until the Last Battle, then it becomes the ultimate McGuffin. This is how people watching the TV show without reading the books will view it.

One thing not mentioned is how Matt blowing the horn impacts the beginning of the third book. Everyone acknowledges the fact that it would be very beneficial to the Aes Sedai if Mat died. That would mean the horn was no longer tied to Mat. Even so, they still heal him. That adds more mystery to why they healed him for both the readers and for Mat. Do they need him for something we don't understand or was this just Siuan choosing to save a life over having more control over what happens with the horn? It's a small detail but had a huge impact on my opinion of the Aes Sedai my first time reading the series.

***SPOILER*** As a first time reader, when Mat blew the horn, that's when I thought that his character became "important" and not just a side kick. Rand was already important as the The Dragon Reborn, Perrin was already important because he's a wolf brother. Cutting the horn would take away that importance for new fans. What else is there to make him essential?

Another point to bringing in the Heroes to defeat the Seanchan is it's meant to show how powerful they are. Without the Heroes they had no chance at defeating the Seanchan. It gave us the readers an understanding of how great a force they are, especially as we realize it was just the scouting crew, that a larger force was coming next. Without the Horn, Falme is lost to the Seanchan and we never see them as dangerous as they are. It's about so much more than just Mat. But I agree it is also important that people think Mat is the Horn blower. It becomes an intense sequence of trying to get Mat to the Horn during the LB, and when Olver blows it it's a wait, wtf? It's actually a great sequence, especially visually when we get that on screen.

As big as I am on changing things and cutting things, I think this one must stay. Rand doesn’t really believe he’s the dragon reborn until Artur Hawkwing recognizes him as Lews Therin. That’s a big important step. I’m addition, I think it would be a big overkill to introduce the heroes at the last battle, as it is already bursting with exciting moments…it would be bloated. Lastly, I think those epic moments in the earlier books are what kept me engaged for the long run, and hopefully can do so similarly for watchers of the show. If it’s this cool earlier on, how could they possibly top it at the end? Through the whole series I was expecting to be let down by the last battle and was not. Things like Rand traveling to the battlefield at the end of EOTW and the horn being blown showed me early on how potentially big this story can get.

For me, its a simple answer. Keep it...because it's in the books. I always say follow the source material as close as possible, even if it doesn't make good television, it still follows what it's meant to follow. The closer an adaptation stays to the source material, the more I enjoy it.

Another thing we should be aware of. It is not guaranteed that Amazon will give us enough series to showcase the whole book. If the numbers are not there they will have no problems cancelling the show. So if they cut the scent with mat blowing the Horn then we potentially might not see that happening in the show. Rafe and the other executives need to keep interest in the show going so need to think of the here and now and not what will potentially happen in the future.

Blowing the horn in book 2 made the books feel fresh and new to me. It changed my view on the series from one of a standard fantasy to a series where the normal tropes get tossed upside down. I feel like it would have the same effect with the show. I could see it being a moment that goes viral...us book fans taping our friend's reactions. Also, everyone kept saying it was a given that the good guys would win when the horn was blown. I disagree. The movement of the army was magically tied to Rand's fight with Ba'alzamon in the sky. They would only win if Rand won his fight...and that was uncertain.

Loved everything about the Hor in the books. Having said that, I hope they cut it out completely in the show. They are gonna take so much time making channeling important, better to not mix in some other ghost magic that could be seen as over powerful..

This can't be cut in my opinion. Maybe have the horn tied to the banner be removed but too much is tied to the blowing of the horn. You have the declaration of the Dragon Reborn, the wound that doesn't heal, Transformation of Masema, and beginning of the madness. Keep but change some things to tie into AMOL

I can get behind deleting the fight in the sky scene, but the Horn is way too epic and important for the plot, and also Mat's character and also the Seanchan later on for it to be deleted.

The argument that the horn needs to be blown under the dragon banner being raised. The technicality is Moiraine gave the banner to Rand in Faldara. So while its not a physically raised banner. At that point the banner has come into play. The heroes exist in the dream realm, so their characters can be introduced in the dream realm. It sucks to lose what could be a big twist and impact. Having it altered to make the story flow better and have a bigger impact later would be cool too. After seeing so many thing changed when it gets adapted, I am jaded. Ill expect the worst and hope for the best. The folks making this show act like they care, which is more than I have seen from other showrunners.

Obviously, the failures of the ending treatment of the Horn speak more to the need to alter how the Horn works out at the end, not how the Horn is introduced in the series. Mat blowing the Horn is the first time we think “he’s a hero!” He deserves this because he’s been saddled with the dagger for the last two books. That’s made us think poorly of him sometimes, but we see that he shoulders the burden of enacting his own bright ideas. Also, we need to see Birgitte before she shows up in TAR. Also, Mat’s newfound importance from blowing the Horn is super significant when assessing why the Amyrlin decides to heal him. Also, that the Horn is unavailable in later books is a major plot point, especially how it can’t be used effectively when captured by the enemy, as long as Mat is alive. If he’s not going to blow the Horn, there’s no point in even having a Horn of Valere.

  • @matthewstringer5675

But doesn’t keeping the horn just add so much more tension to the last battle, because remember the forces of the light believe that should the shadow take the horn and blow it then the heroes will fight for the shadow. So if we have this scene in season 2 showing just how powerful the heroes are then that can add so much to an already tense and epic scene.

Rekappa is wrong about the banner not binding the heroes of the horn. I just reread Memoty of Light last week. It is shown that they do manifest first where Mat is since he has the banner. Mat notices someone familiar riding off to the North while the rest of the heroes assemble around Mat. That is clearly Noal. For this and many other reasons, do not cut the horn.

We know that the actor playing Padan Fain was only at the first table read, and we haven't heard anything more about him since. If they cut Padan Fain, or at least cut him down or change when he becomes relevant; you can almost scrap the major story arc of The Great Hunt. I wonder if Rafe will postpone the events in the Great Hunt to after Rand has been proclaimed the Dragon in Tear.

Look, recappa sedai or whoever she is is gorgeous and right. If your superhero after second summoning needs to stop and have a 3 pronged discussion IN STORY with the people that summoned them about how they might be stopped and literally the best they can come up with is "I can't die but I can maybe be tied to a tree", then your superhero is overpowered. Now multiply that superhero by literally hundreds, give them all some sort of teleportation, ranged weapons, and place them in an area where they don't remember, think, eat or sleep for 3000 years but all they need get to do is train. It's nuts. Robert Jordan wanted to make a LotR that was more realistic, but in the Horn of Valere, he knew he had a problem. His legend and myth was too powerful. He should have come up with a better way to kick the Seanchan out of Falme, but he cheesed the ending to the second book and then he literally made sure to keep that overpowered piece of shit out of the books for nearly 12 books after that. There is literally a whole book in this series titled for the search for this piece of shit and that book comes before the book titled the dragon reborn himself. Sanderson wisely kept the blowing of the Horn until nearly the end of the Last Battle. He spent the entire last trilogy trying to make us forget about it. Brandon and Jordan put the greatest hunter of the horn (Faile) in arrest 38 times in 12 books just so the horn would not be found or blown. Literally imagine what these writers could have done with the character of Faile if they didn't have to artificially restrain her from ever coming within a kingdom of the mcguffin for 20 years of book releases. Everything wrong with Faile as a character can probably be laid at the feet of the Horn, and what's worse is....................FAILE WAS RIGHT!!!!! The Horn is worth everything. If the thing makes Faile correct, it must be deleted in the next retelling of the wheel, in my opinion.

Since it's been confirmed that Season 01 is just the Eye of the World, it seems almost impossible that they will do Season 02 as The Great Hunt and Season 03 as The Dragon Reborn. In addition both of those books are similar chase-style books. Looking at the whole series, it will definitely be more sensible to cut The Great Hunt. I think the fandom needs to get ready for big changes. Cutting the Horn is very likely.

Yo. The Horn didn't lessen the tension at all. Maybe on your second or fifteenth read through I can see that. Blowing the Horn was more of a "holy shit he actually did it? And it worked?!" That moment in The Great Hunt hooked me so hard and made me excited for The Dragon Reborn. And Hawkwing talking to Hurin, who is awesome, was awesome. Everything about that was awesome. Plus they aren't "tied to the Dragon Banner." Artur just said it wouldn't feel right riding into battle without it. Plus come on. The title for that chapter is just...bruh. I would be very sad if it's cut from the show.

MAJOR SPOILER, with solution: . . . . . . There are ways to do the Horn where it gets a powerUp throughout the series instead of being the one shot kill. For instance, only Heroes who Mat heared/knows about can appear. Meaning first blow, maybe only Brigitte, King/Queen of Manetheren and Arthur Hawking come out. Later throughout the story, Matt gets his past selfs mermories, through them he learns about the other heroes. That gives a decently strong power creep for the last battle, but it keeps it in check before. Gives Mat the importance for the story and a good way to show his tactican past.
