Wheel and Tire Balancing, right and wrong way : Lucore Automotive

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Not everything we do here revolves around Old School Hot Rods and modern Tuner Cars / Race Cars, we do a whole lot of normal daily driver stuff too! In today's video we are working on a customers Toyota Tundra pickup truck and finding a remedy for his steering wheel vibration. The wheels and tires were done a few months back at a national chain store and well.. you'll see.
There are a LOT of responsibilities a technician / mechanic has, one of your most common is getting wheels and tires properly mounted and balanced however the process isn't as easy as most people think! So here we cut together a quick little video to show a bit of the process and what to do, and NOT do when it comes to this!
No wheels or tires were harmed in the making of this video!

    As an ASE master certified tech for 12 years, all you had to do is unseat the tire from the rim and shift it half a turn and reseat it, throw it back on the balancer and let it run and you will see a dramatic difference in weights needed. Also the wheel balancing machine is calibrated very carefully and by having a mechanic lean his extra weight on the machine tend to throw it out of balance which can cause false readings. I never lean on the machine when it is running. Something to think about.

    I just spoke to a well known tire shop in RI and told me it didn't matter to use all 1/4 oz weights to balance one of my tires that were out 4.25oz. The manager actually said that all 1/4oz or 4, 1 oz didn't make a difference. So why do I still have vibration on that tire? The other guy said I probably need an alignment, I told him I got 70,000 miles on my last set of tires that wore perfectly, why would you touch the alignment? I'm so tired of dealing with people that don't know crap about what there supposed to be professional at.

    The big name tire outlets do this routinely. Periodically, the adhesive weights come off during driving when you it a pothole or when ice/snow packs into the wheel during winter. I just had a small local shop take care of the steering wheel shake. He said he balanced the wheel then balanced the wheel and tire. I don't know how that's done, but my G6 rides perfectly now. I no longer purchase wheels and tires at the big name tire outlets.

    My experience working with tires is that you have to do the best you can, balancing a tire can go flawlessly or its a weight hungry little shit. Just gotta try your best to get it balanced with little weight as possible. (Helps putting the right weights on too)

  • @mikeschwab1943

    @mikeschwab1943

    Ай бұрын

    Right, but if it's calling for 12 or 14 oz of weight on one wheel, more than likely somebody's not doing something right. You could certainly have just a really bad wheel or tire, yes. But a good actually experienced technician should know how to better position and match mount the tire correctly on the rim, for at least the best chance of balancing out the flawed areas between the tire and the rim. I know that it doesn't always work, but it still gives you the better chance.. instead of just simply chasing weights all over the wheel because the machine keeps calling for it..

  • @mikeschwab1943

    @mikeschwab1943

    Ай бұрын

    Most of the techs that I've come across these days just don't get it. Instead of just slapping the tire on the rim and go, there's a better way to line it up so you're not stacking the bad spot of the tire right up against the bad spot of the rim. And the ohh big surprise, it's massively unbalanced and the computer calls for 12 oz of weight stacked on the other side to try and balance.. and every time you stick another quarter ounce on there and spin it it wants you to stick another weight back on the other side and you'll just keep chasing it back and forth..

  • @jlg8689

    I would have dismounted the tire and lubricated it well then mounted it again and checked. I have seen high roadforce on a set of new tires and wheels a coworker had just mounted. Force-matching isn’t always accurate. Also a brake caliper can be so close to the wheel it can pull off stick weights, maybe hammer-on weights would have been a better choice if that is how they were weighted from the factory. I know on the lexus LX570 I would have to use a large cone on the outside and nothing on the inside and it was the best way to have consistent readings detected by the balancer.

    I'm grateful there are videos such as this . I'm curious about a few things sir. Firstly, how did technicians formerly balance tires before such tech. Was available? Secondly, are there other standards (in regards to modern tech) by which technicians test for balancing issues? (i.e. more than one type of machine and/or device available.) Im asking because I am supposed to begin my first day of training TOMORROW at a small, two bay Firestone service center and I have literally NO experience. (which I was completely honestly about before getting hired. But they seem confident in my ability to learn and perform efficiently.) I've been scouring KZread for a few hrs now trying to acquire as much foreknowledge as possible about the matter and would like to familiarize myself with the processes as much as possible. (Both old, new and various ways procedurally.) My only experience with vehicles is a six month job at an Oil Xpress . Doing filters, fluids and differentials checking. I did decently at that. Not sure on the tires thing though. I am admittedly taking the job more out of necessity than passion for the trade to be honest, but I DO like to be efficient at what I do. Ty for these informative videos sir.

    So what was the solution? The machine told you the last guy basically put on the right weight. It told you tire can't be rotated on the wheel. Your machine also said add 7oz + 1oz, and he had 8.25 oz on. Reason likely bad/cheap tire/wheel combo or bent rim, but it told you the same thing as the last guy that you bad mouthed. Then all of a sudden you cut to "ooop, we fixed it", and got all wishy washy. What did you do?

    Thank you for paying attention. I was wondering the same thing, plus they cut off some of the video where they struggled mounting the wheel with the adapter and cone on the machine. Every rim is different, it could be slightly bent and take a bunch of weights. All I know is that I am not an expert. I have a cheap Chinese tire balance machine at home and those Toyota trucks rims are a struggle to balance. I have to use a similar adapter, it takes time for balancing four tires (like a playing with a slot machine several times) and they take a lot of weights. I calibrate the machine every often. No, I don’t have the same situation balancing Chevrolet truck or a Toyota car or small SUV tires.

    Many years ago when I work in the tyre store if we found the wheels were too far out-of-balance we would break the bead and we would spin the tyre 180° most of the time that brought the balance down to a less weight but you should not put weights on top of weights but at the same time of saying that a lot of people do not want to see the wheel weight like a mag wheel weight on their wheel and wheel manufacturers do not allow for a wheel weight to go on the front so it's sort of a curse every car is different

Brought the truck back over a dozen time because it never felt balanced on the highway. Went through 2 sets of tires because of out-of-roundness. They finally forced the 3rd and final set on me with all four wheels having 7oz - 9oz on them. I'm never ever buying tires from PepBoys again.

    Ok first off has anybody ever seen the red and white paint dots on a tires sidewall? They are there for a reason and all have a different meaning but basically tells to the best place to mount the tire in correlation with the valve stem. This helps with putting the least amount of weight possible on the tire. Even still its not always an exact science. Sometimes you just have to figure out what works best and makes the customer happy because that's what it all boils down to in the end. Also to all the people who have a problem with no weights on a rim, would you rather them add a weight to make you happy but the tire not be right? Because there are instances, quite often actually, where they don't need any weight. But I have added a quarter ounce to a wheen before just because they weren't satisfied with a perfectly balanced tire and wanted to see a weight on it and it made them happy. Your not really going to feel the diffrence in a qt ounce anyway on heavier tire and wheel combos just on the smaller 13 and 14 inch rims.

    Ok at 7:55 there was a cut and you cut off the whole wheel and tire balancing! How did you do it? How much weight did it need? Was it placed in the same spots as before? Did you have to break down the tire and wheel? If so, how much did you have to move the tire from where it was before. I would have been tempted when I saw it was four ounces off, to just add 4 ounces or remove. It seems a shame to let almost a pound of the old weights go to waste. I bought a new set of BFG Ko2’s with steel rims and the shop can’t get it right, they even replaced 2 tires and still the steering wheel shakes between 50 and 60 mph, one of the tires has 9.5 oz! I do realized they stacked the weights the way you said it shouldn’t be done, i don’t know what to do anymore, I’ll probably take the truck to another shop for balancing, and spend more money that I shouldn’t have

    Whoa! Well congratulations on the new car purchase first off! Secondly yes, yes that IS concerning. Assuming the shop will be using stick on weights not hammer weights the inside barrel needs to be clean of debris and dust. Most shops will throw some brake clean at the surface to get it cleaned up but if it's bad enough that a blast of brake clean won't get it... you better get in there and do some cleaning first!

    @beachwoodtire and they basically don't understand how the balancer works(when I was a beginner, I researched how the balancer work and why it is telling me to put weight there) And there is something called counter weight or chasing weight. They don't know how to correct that. It could be bad tire or rim, but mechanics usually don't know how to correct that.

  • @fromisheon4867

    @fromisheon4867

    10 ай бұрын

    @beachwoodtire if it is a user error's to putting multiple weights on a rim in different spots, it means a technician didn't put the weight on a precise spot. When the weight should be on the dead center spot, the technician put weight too much to the right or left of that "lazer beam" (older machines don't have this feature, so it is easier to make these mistakes). This stuff is pretty advanced skills to learn. But a tire shop must teach these skills how to correct those. What all they need is a concept.
