Whatever happened to Anastacia?

Музыка

Anastacia was one of the biggest music superstars, of the early 2000s, clocking up mega hits such as I’m Outta Love & Left Outside Alone, and selling millions of albums. But for the last 15 years or so, the singer seems to have fallen off the radar.
So what exactly did happen to Anastacia and what’s she been up to all this time? Why was Heavy Rotation, her 4th studio album from 2008 such a huge mistake? And is she likely to make a comeback anytime soon? This mini-documentary explores all these questions and more.

Heavy Rotation was a career killing album. It was awful. However, her follow up, Resurrection was really good! The lead single Stupid Little Things was so catchy. The problem was, it was released another 5 years after Heavy Rotation, the world moved on, the radio also wouldn’t play her because she was over 40 and she was an independent artist with little promo. I’d recommend everyone to listen to Ressurrection tho

Yes I don't know what happened in the interim. I know she switched labels but six years is such a long time to leave it between albums of new material, especially when the last one hadn't done well. The momentum was completely gone.

@@jonnyharvey From 2009-2011 she didn’t have a record label. She toured with Chaka Khan, Lulu and Heather Small and was offered a place in the X factor full time but said no because she had agreeed to a tour with night if the proms during the same period Apparently she couldn’t find a deal she was comfortable with. She spoke about being offered a 360 deal and rejected it. In 2012 she was told to release a cover album which was a low budget project. This would ultimately fund a new album of originals due in 2013 but then she got cancer and it was released in 2014

I never truly understood the hate for Heavy Rotation. Was it weak compared to other albums? Yes. Was it released at the wrong time considering the high expectations the self titled album left? Absolutely. Is it a fundamentally bad album? Absolutely not. It was just wrong place, wrong time and bad decisions creatively. The change of look was odd but not necessarily the songs imo. They still have that Anastacia touch to them. The only thing about that album I have a grip with is I'll Never Love Again made it instead of Calling All Angels who is much stronger. Ultimately what killed/keeps killing her career is poor decisions and lack of creative focus. It seems her team cant seem to grasp the concept of who she was as an artist, who she is and where she's going. They dont fully capitalize on her nostalgia yet treat her as a nostalgia act. They think she has potential for newer projects but never fully promote them at all. It seems as though the trigger is never pulled and nobody knows why and she never adresses it/seems to care about it. Insanely frustrating as a fan.

There are many loose ends on Anastacia's career and a lot of confusing decisions. She was never truly capitalized on and then she made a really poor career choice changing to Mercury records. Lisa didnt part ways with Anastacia per se. As a matter of fact, Lisa was creative director on Anastacia's first three albums and had a big hand on what we register as the Anastacia sound and look that made her a star. Unfortunately, royalties and contractual issues got in the way which led to Lisa eventually filling a lawsuit against Anastacia and them parting ways because of these issues. This paired with the change to Mercury and Heavy Rotation was what led to her downfall. After that she could never find her proper footing again though Resurrection was a beacon of hope, unfortunately not promoted/capitalized on enough. Evolution wasnt bad but it just didnt have a solid foundation consisting of leftovers from Resurrection and other singers/songwriters songs plus lackluster promotion and no release in the UK (god knows why). In essence: everyone just wanted an Anastacia album follow up and for 19 years now we've yet to have a fully originals album with her sprock sound. (Not counting Resurrection because most of the songs are credit to other songwriters). Her team couldn't care less and they keep botching any and everything she does, its a talent at this point. It's very frustrating because ive never seen a fanbase as loyal and as supportive as Anastacia's and yet there are all these weird decisions that are never adressed but everyone acknowledges as hindering. Everyone agrees on one thing though: with the proper promotion and creative direction she could be back in the charts and in the mainstream media in a heartbeat. She would give the current girls a run for their money.
