How Pink became a superstar
Музыка
In 2001, with the release of her second album Misunderstood, Pink’s career skyrocketed. She was no longer just a promising new pop star but a true international superstar.
Pink’s debut album ‘Can’t Take me Home’ released in 2000 had performed moderately well and spawned three hit singles. Despite getting off to a strong start with her career, Pink wasn’t happy.
Her debut album for the most part had been created by her record label, with the singer having very little creative control. And Pink found herself lumped in with other dance-pop singers from that era. But somehow or another she not only managed to find her own authentic sound and style but also sold millions of records in the process.
So just how did she do it? How did Pink and Linda Perry end up working together? Who did Linda originally pitch ‘Get the Party Started to? Which Misunderstood song does Pink wish she no longer had to sing? Was Britney annoyed about her name being referenced on ‘Don’t let me get me? And why does the iconic album have such an important legacy? This mini-documentary explores these questions and more.

It’s so rare to find a video about that era of Pink’s timeline. I’m just in love with your material and the way that you really respect her as a singer 😊

Pink arrived on the pop scene at the perfect time. The teen pop crew started to move away from their glossy and polished production and move in more adult directions. Pink clearly made the smart decision and armed herself with a small team of writers and producers. L.A Reid may have had his hesitations, but I'm glad he allowed her "the oppritunity to fail" Also the entire album is amazing from start to finish, with the deep cuts being just as strong as the singles. Missundaztood allowed new artists to be more raw and vulnerable with their music. The album is a favourite of mine that I will cherish until the end of time.

Great video, and I'm glad that women like Pink and Mandy Moore decided to ditch the Formula-Based Pop-Making scene to do their own thing, you should do Mandy Moore next if she's in your wheelhouse. I can see why she didn't work with Dallas again, on the next album, she needed a more harder edge, which she found in Tim Mitchell, and wanted to work with other people that had an edge to them like Nate Nuess, Tony Kanal and Peaches, an artist like Pink doesn't do the same gag over again, if Missundaztood wasn't evident that she was going to continue to change her sound, Try This really defined it perfectly.

Thank you 😀 I honestly don’t know much about Mandy Moore
(11:07) I was one of the fans alienated by Pink's second album. Not for the pop/rock sound (as I love genres) but her comments about using R&B to get her foot in the door. She was part of an R&B girl group; she credited as a writer of 7 of the 13 songs -- so this wasn't a fake persona that was made up by the label for the "Can't Take You Home" album. She was that person at the time. People can grow and change, but Pink seems to make rash decisions which leads to bad blood with people (ex. former collaborators) and bad takes she later has to retract.

I'm sure she didn't really mean it - she was very young at the time. But yes I can understand how those comments would be hurtful to her original fanbase

I love P!NK and your video about her career. I'm new to her music. I grew up with 1960's music and stopped listening to music completely because it all sounded the same. I just "discovered" P!NK last week, and I can't stop watching her videos. By the way, I love your cat; and that made be a new subscriber.... 🤣❤✌

I might be in the minority but I actually like Can't Take Me Home. I understand how P!nk feels about it but it seems like she has completely disregarded the album and doesnt perform anything from it on tour. Its one of those things - there'd be no Missundastood without Can't Take Me Home.

Does anyone else remember the premiere of Get the party started music video during MTV European Music Awards? Personally, I didn't like it at all and it's still one of my least favorite songs from her, maybe because the rest of the album has other stories to tell. There are happy songs on the album, Respect is fun and Misunderstood as well, but my favorites are Just like a pill, Eventually, Family portrait, Numb, My vietnam, Dear diary and Lonely girl. It is a really strong album, Try this was a big let down after this masterpiece.

Ooh I like your shirt! So yeah, P!nk..... she was a BIG name for me in teens and very early 20s. I hated her first album and that sound. I mean who remembers the huge circulation of the videos on those new freeview channels that came about in the early 2000s? Missundaztood, Try This and I'm Not Dead are all excellent. Solid, fresh and exciting. After that, it all just seems a bit bland and forgettable. Sure, they're big anthemic songs, made for her flipping around on her bungee strings, but just not for me. She doesn't stand out anymore other than a performing artist. On a personal level, Who Knew reminds me so much of my dearly departed best friend. Even F**cking Perfect which she actually shared with me to show me some love just days before her passing. Very meaningful stuff that transcends any opinion of her as an artist now.

yeah that's cool - it's good to hear different opinions
Four stages of Pink observance: 1) seeing that, while not being that remarkable or talented, she’s a bit different than the other pop girls of the 2000s and rooting for her as an underdog 2) seeing her come into her own as a pop songwriter, able to craft catchy hooks 3) watching with dismay as she seems to start believing the hype about herself as she expresses a veiled sense of superiority to other artists 4) finding every self-righteous interview she gives to be tedious, pretentious, and boring, losing all interest in her forever 😐

I totally get it! I've struggled putting 3 and 4 into words, and while it may not be 100% exactly how I'd put it, I definitely noticed this slightly off vibe from her for years. And I've never hated her, I've always enjoyed her talent, but that slight feeling of superiority always did tickle me a little wrong. I'm sure it wasn't necessarily on purpose, but especially around the time of "Stupid Girls", it definitely felt like this need to put down other women because she saw herself as better than. I had similar struggles with Avril, too, she sometimes had this air of not only not being like "other girls", but being better than. Them early 2000's were a wild time :p

What I can't figure out about Pink is why all of her album covers, without exception, are utterly awful although she is a great artist and has taste in general. All wrong every time in terms of graphic design, style, photography, pose. I don't understand how it happens.
